<濁流>-‘약’의 향연- ( －the banquet of the modern drugs－)

초록

본 논문은 근대의약이라는 상징체계를 중심으로 채만식의 <탁류>를 분석하고 있다. 이것은 두 가지 목적을 가지고 있다. 첫째는 <탁류>에 나타난 근대 의약제도의 구체적인 모습과 그 구조적 문제들, 근대의약의 다양한 의미 등을 살피는 것이다. 이것은 <탁류>에 대한 새로운 주제적 접근일 뿐만 아니라 동시에 일제 식민지 시기 한국의약사의 복원 작업이기도 하다. 둘째로 <탁류>에 나타난 ‘약’이라는 상징의 서사적 쓰임을 규명하는 것이다. 이것은 서사적 모티브로서의 ‘약’이라는 상징을 중심으로 <탁류>를 분석하는 최초의 시도라는 의미를 지닌다.
무엇보다 ‘제중당’은 식민지 조선의 근대적인 의료체계를 이해하는데 중요한 키워드를 제공한다. ‘제중당’에는 1930년대 말 근대적 제약업의 모습이 잘 반영되어 있다. 그리고 채만식은 약제사 박제호를 통해 ‘약’의 불평등한 생태계를 묘사하고 있다. 그는 근대의약 시장과 체계의 부조리를 누구보다도 잘 알고 있는 인물이다. 박제호 자신이 이런 구조적 모순을 이용해서 폭리를 취하고 있는 당사자이기 때문이다.
<탁류>에서 근대의약은 주로 등장인물들의 왜곡된 삶과 그 결과에 대한 응급처방의 상징으로 등장한다. 예컨대 무분별한 성적 욕망의 흔적을 지우는 약(매독 치료제), 탐욕적인 인간을 심판하는 약(독약), 기억하고 싶지 않은 과거를 지우는 약(낙태약) 등이 그것이다. 이것은 질병에 대한 합리적인 치료방법이라는 근대의약의 기능적 목적과는 거리가 먼 것이다. 그렇다면 근대의약의 기능이 이렇게 전도된 원인은 무엇일까? 우리는 그 원인을 두 가지 점에서 찾을 수 있다. 하나는 근대사회의 왜곡된 삶이고, 다른 하나는 근대의약 자체의 특성이다.
<탁류>의 주인공들은 근대의약의 힘을 빌려 자신의 욕망을 실현하거나 그 피해를 감추려고 한다. 여기서 약의 본래적 기능은 변질되고 왜곡된다. 예컨대 매독 치료제는 무분별한 성적 욕망의 증거인멸 수단이 되며, 독약은 복수의 무기가 되고, 분만촉진제들은 낙태약으로 변질되는 것이다. 이것은 근대의약이 근대사회의 왜곡된 삶을 지탱하는 중요한 한 축이라는 사실을 증명하는 것이다. 근대의약의 왜곡된 쓰임은 그 자체의 특성에서 연유하는 것이기도 하다. 근대의약은 자연의 산물이 아니라 인공의 산물이라는 특성을 지니고 있다. 이로써 약의 형태는 단순화되었고, 약에 대한 인간의 접근성은 비약적으로 개선되었다. 근대의약의 기능 전도, 즉 약의 오남용은 바로 이런 메커니즘 속에서 가능한 것이었다.
<탁류>에 등장하는 약은 대부분 식민지 현실을 사는 인물들의 비극적 삶과 밀접하게 연결되어 있다. 이런 점에서 ‘약’은 식민지 조선의 근대적인 의료체계를 드러내는 핵심적인 기호이자, 식민지 현실을 사는 민중의 비극적 운명을 암시하는 상징이기도 하다.

영어초록

In this paper, I analyzed Chae Man-Sik’s <Turbid Stream> throughthe symbol system of the modern drugs. This has two purposes. First, Iwas trying to explain the specific form of modern medicine, itsstructural problems and various means of modern drug, that appearedin <Turbid Stream>. This approach is not only a new subject for thework but also restoration of the Japanese colonial period in history ofpharmacy in Korea. Second, I was trying to analyze ‘drug’ as asymbol in the work. This is the first attempt to analyze <TurbidStream> through the symbol system of drug as epic motif.
Above all, ‘Jejungdang’ as drugstore gives important keyword, thatunderstand Korea health care system of Japanese colonial era. In‘Jejungdang’ was well reflected the modern pharmaceutical industryof the end of the 1930s. And Chae Man-Sik criticize the inequalecosystem of ‘drugs’ through druggist Park jeho. He is a figure, whowell understand absurdity of the modern pharmaceutical market andsystem, because Park jeho is directly concerned with the structuralcontradictions and profiteer in that situation.
The modern drugs in <Turbid Stream> emerge as a symbol ofemergency prescription for distorted life of characters and its result.
For example, it is a drug to clear signs of indiscriminate sexualdesire(syphilis cure), a drug to judge human greed(poison), a drug toerase the past, that do not want to remember(abortion drug). This is farfrom the functional purpose of the modern drugs as reasonabletreatment for the disease. If so, what is the cause of this inversion ofthe function of modern drugs? We can be found the cause in tworespects: the one is the distorted life of modern society, and the otherone is a characteristic of the modern drugs itself.
The characters in <Turbid Stream> should try to realize theirdesires, or conceal the damage through the modern drugs. Because ofthis the inherent feature of the drug is altered and distorted. Forexample, syphilis cure is means of destruction of evidence ofindiscriminate sexual desire, poison is the weapon of revenge andparturifacient is transformed into an abortion drug. This isdemonstrated, that the modern drugs is one axis to sustain modernsociety's distorted life. The misuse of the modern drugs are originatedfrom a characteristic of the modern drugs itself. The modern drugs arenot a product of nature, but the result of artificial. The result was asimplified form of drugs and human accessibility for drugs hasimproved by leaps and bounds. Distortion of the features of moderndrugs, that abuse of the drug was immediately available in themechanism.
The drug in <Turbid Stream> is closely connected with the tragiclife of the person in colony. In this regard, ‘drug’ is a important sign,that reveal Korea's modern health care system, as well as a symbol,which implies the tragic fate of Korean people of Japanese colonialera.
