이애주(李愛珠) <바람맞이>춤에 내재된 한국춤의 본성(本性) (The Essential Qualities of Korean Dance That Inhere in Ae-joo Lee’s ‘Barammaji’ Dance)

초록

본 연구의 목적은 <바람맞이>춤이 어떠한 과정을 통해 구체적인 몸짓으로 빚어지게 되었는지, 이 춤에 내재된 한국춤의 본성은 무엇인지 밝히는 것이다. 이를 위하여 다음과 같은 연구 문제를 설정하였다. 첫째, <바람맞이>춤의 생성 배경은 무엇인가? 둘째, <바람맞이>춤의 구성과 내용은 무엇이며, 이는 무엇을 의미하는가? 셋째, <바람맞이>춤에 내재된 한국춤의 본성은 무엇이며, 어떠한 차원으로 구분될 수 있는가? 이러한 연구문제를 알아내기 위하여 <바람맞이>춤을 춘 이애주의 춤 인생, 이 춤이 추어진 당대의 사회․역사적 상황, 문화운동의 특성 등을 고찰하였고, 이와 함께 <바람맞이>춤의 구조와 내용을 분석함으로써 이 춤에 내재된 한국춤의 본성을 탐색하였다. 자료 수집과 분석은 <바람맞이>춤에 관한 자료(인터뷰, 공개강의, 신문 및 잡지 기사, 논문, 단행본, 공연포스터 등)를 수집하여 귀납적 범주분석의 질적 분석 방법을 토대로 기술, 분석, 해석하였고, 이를 결과로 제시하였다.
연구결과 첫째, <바람맞이>춤은 1) ‘진정한 춤은 시대정신과 역사의식이 반영된 삶의 몸짓이자, 소통’이라는 이애주의 춤 철학, 2) 1950년부터 1980년대까지의 사회․시대적 상황, 3) 대학생 집단을 중심으로 피어난 민속과 민중문화 그리고 4) 1987년 6월 민주항쟁을 중심으로 한 사회적 움직임 등의 네 가지 맥락적 관계에 의해 탄생되었다.
둘째, <바람맞이>춤의 구성은 1) 씨춤, 2) 물춤, 3) 불춤, 4) 꽃춤으로 이루어져 있고, 이러한 춤판의 상징적 의미는 1) 씨앗으로 표현된 역사의 주인이자 기둥인 ‘민중’이 생명의 탄생과 성장으로 상징화된 주체적이고 자주적인 그들의 ‘생명과 권리’를 2) 과도한 물과 불, 그리고 혹독한 바람으로 표현된 정부의 ‘독재체제’에 대항하여 3) 중심과 뿌리를 굳건히 새움으로써 새로운 생명인 꽃으로 피어나는 것으로 상징화된 민중의 ‘자주와 권리의 회복’이자 ‘희망’으로 해석된다.
셋째, 이 춤에 내재된 한국춤의 본성은 네 가지 차원으로 구분된다. 1) 기능적(機能的) 차원으로 표현성(表現性), 소통성(疏通性), 상징성(象徵性), 공명성(共鳴性), 살풀이성(煞풀이性), 치유성(治癒性), 해방성(解放性)이다. 2) 시의적(時宜的) 차원으로 사회성(社會性), 역사성(歷史性), 민중성(民衆性), 현장성(現場性)이다. 3) 계승적(繼承的) 차원으로 민족성(民族性), 전통성(傳統性), 정통성(正統性)이다. 4) 미학적(美學的) 차원으로 자연성(自然性), 생명성(生命性), 역동성(力動性), 즉흥성(卽興性), 창조성(創造性), 신명성(神命性)이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study to examine the process of how Ae-joo Lee’s <Barammaji> dance was created and the essential qualities of Korean dance that inhere in that dance. There are three research problems: first, what is the background of the creation of this dance; second, what are the structure and content of this dance and its meaning; and third, which essential qualities of Korean dance are included in it.
In order to solve those problems, I examined Ae-joo Lee’s life in terms of dance, the social and historical situation in Korea from 1950 to 1980 in the context of social movements and the <Barammaji> dance, and also analyzed the structure and content of that dance to thoroughly extract the essential qualities of Korean dance which it contains.
This study mainly relied upon the qualitative research method and used documents such as books, papers, articles, seminars, notes from interviews and a documentary about her. I segmented the files by codes, and conceptualized subjects based on assigned codes.
The results of this study are, first, that the <Barammaji> dance arose from Lee Ae-joo’s dance philosophy, that authentic dance should spring from human life and reflects social and historical consciousness, which developed throughout her lifetime, encompassing the social and historical situation in Korea from 1950 to 1980, and from the college students’ social movements, especially the June Democracy Movement of 1987.
Second, the structure and content of the <Barammaji> dance come from themes of four source dances; 1) seed dance, 2) water dance, 3) fire dance, and 4) flower dance. This dance symbolizes 1) the vitality of the common people, who are the main drivers of history, illustrated by the sprouting and growth of the seed, 2) how they prevail even though their rights are taken away by dictatorial government, illustrated by the effects of too much water, fire, and wind, and 3) how they finally emerge stronger and flourishing through regaining their independence, rights, and hope, illustrated by the strong roots and beautiful flowering of the plant.
And third, the essential qualities of Korean dance that inhere in the <Barammaji> dance are found in four dimensions. 1) Expressiveness, Communication, Symbolism, Resonance, Consolation, Healing, and Liberation as the functional dimension; 2) Sociality, Historical Reference, Populist Relevance, and Situational Accuracy as the timeliness dimension; 3) Ethnicity, Traditionality, and Authenticity as the inheritable dimension; and 4) Naturalness, Vitality, Dynamic Energy, Improvisation, Creativity, and Exhilaration as the esthetic dimension.
