초록

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of herbal medicine for weight management in breast cancer survivors receiving tamoxifen therapy.

Methods: A retrospective multi-center study was conducted involving 15 breast cancer survivors undergoing tamoxifen therapy. Participants received herbal medicine treatment for a minimum of 3 months, and changes in body weight, body mass index (BMI), body composition, blood pressure, and heart rate (HR) were analyzed. Adverse events were recorded and assessed for severity and causality.

Results: The participants experienced significant reductions in body weight (mean : 4.79 kg) and BMI (mean : 1.79 kg/m²), exceeding the minimal clinically important difference (MCID). Body fat mass and body fat percentage decreased by 4.15 kg and 4.01%, respectively, while skeletal muscle mass showed no significant reduction. Diastolic blood pressure decreased by 6.73 mmHg, indicating potential benefits in blood pressure regulation. However, HR increased by 12.13 bpm, warranting further investigation. Mild adverse events, such as constipation and skin rash, were reported in 40% of participants.

Conclusions: Herbal medicine demonstrated efficacy in weight management for tamoxifen-treated breast cancer survivors, providing a viable alternative approach. Further large-scale studies are recommended to validate these findings and explore long-term outcomes.
