백암성총의 정토저술 연구 - 『淨土寶書』와 『栢庵淨土讚』을 중심으로 - (A Study on Baegam Seongchong's Compilations Regarding Pure Land: Focusing on Jeongtoboseo (淨土寶書) and Baegamjeongtochan (栢庵淨土讚))

초록

백암성총(栢庵性聰, 1631-1700)이 임자도의 표류선에서 서적을 수집 한 후 처음으로 편찬한 것이『淨土寶書』이다. 그의 나이 56세(1686)였다. 당시 승려들은 선과 교로 나뉘어 서로 우열을 주창하고 있었다. 그러나 일반 대중에게는 타력적인 신앙심이 더욱 필요할 때였다. 이러한 상황을 미루어 볼 때 그에게는 우리나라에 정토신앙의 유포가 절실하였을 것이다. 불교의 영험담을 유포하여 신심을 돈발케 하고, 대중들에게 널리 포교하기 위함이다. 『정토보서』의 편찬 배경은 정토신앙을 고취시키고, 정토염불법문을 널리 유포하기 위함이다. 그뿐만 아니라 당시 중국에 불교가 성행하고 있는 사례를 보여 줌으로 조선의 사대부들에게 불교정책의 완화도 기대하였던 것으로 보인다.
그리고 7년 뒤인 63세(1693)에『栢庵淨土讚』을 저술하게 된다. 그가 만년에 정토 찬탄시를 짓게 된 배경은 『정토보서』를 저술한 후 정토신앙에 심취하면서 부터이다. 이는 정토삼부경의 내용을 시적으로 표현하고 때로는 자신의 염불수행과정과 정토를 찬탄한 4韻 8句 100首로 된 시집이다. 그가 이러한 시를 짓게 된 배경에는 『정토보서』의 편찬으로 인하여 정토교학과 신앙 및 왕생담을 정리하면서 정토사상과 신앙이 확립되었기 때문이다. 그의 간절한 정토에 대한 구도심과 신앙적인 표현을 주옥같은 시구로 표현한 작품이다.
이러한 영향이 18세기에 明衍(?~1704~?)의 『念佛普勸文』, 有璣의 『新編普勸文』, 箕城快善(1693~1764)의 『念佛還鄕曲』, 19세기에 東化竺典의 『勸往歌』, 『自責歌』, 20세기에 금명보정의『淨土讚百詠』등으로 나타난다.
이상으로 두 권의 저술을 통하여 그의 정토관을 구명해보면, 그는 조선시대에 보기 드문 정토교학자로서 저술가이고, 염불신앙가이며, 칭명염불 수행자였다. 따라서 그의 저술은 조선후기의 정토신행을 흥기시키는 새로운 계기를 마련하였으며, 오늘날 한국정토신앙의 토대를 마련하였다. 따라서 17세기 중기 이후의 조선시대 정토사상의 고취와 염불신앙의 유포에 크게 기여하였다.

영어초록

The first compilation by Baegam Seongchong (栢庵性聰, 1631-1700) after collecting books from a drifting ship in Imja Island was Jeongtoboseo, and he was 56 years old (1686). In this period, Buddhist monks were divided into Seon (禪, meditation practice) and Gyo (敎, the scholastic approach), each advocating its superiority and inferiority. However, it was a time when dependent faith was more necessary for the general lay people. Considering this context, Seongchong recognized the necessity to promote Pure Land faith within the Joseon society, and he compiled the Jeongtoboseo. Additionally, he likely aimed that noblemen relaxed Buddhist policies by showing an example of Buddhism was widely practiced in China.
Seven years after, at the age of 63 in 1693, he wrote the Baegamjeongtochan. His motivation for crafting these poems in his later years was rooted in his growing commitment to the Pure Land faith, a commitment that blossomed following the completion of the Jeongtoboseo. This was a collection of poems consisting of expressing the contents of the Three Pure Land Sūtras and praising his chanting and praising the Pure Land. The background to his writing these poems is that the compilation of the Jeongtoboseo organized the doctrines, beliefs, and stories of rebirth, thereby establishing the Pure Land thought and faith. It is a work that expresses his earnest desire to seek the Pure Land and religious expressions through exquisite verses.
Also, these was influenced the Yeombulbogwonmun (念佛普勸文) by Myeong-hyeong (?~1704~?), the Sinpyeonbogwonmun (新編普勸文) by Yugi, the Yeombulhwanhyanggok (念佛還鄕曲) by Giseong kwaeseon (1693~1764), the Gwonwangga (勸往歌) and the Jachaekga (自責歌) by Donghwa Chukjeon in the 19th century, and the Jeongtochanbaegyeong (淨土讚百詠) by Geummyeong Bojeong in the 20th century.
Through an examination of Baegam Seongchong's two key compilations, he could be characterized as a rare Pure Land scholar, a dedicated writer, a devout believer in the recitation of Pure Land, and an active practitioner of such devotion. His writings played a pivotal role in rejuvenating Pure Land practice during the late Joseon, establishing a solid groundwork for the development of the modern Korean Pure Land faith. As a result, he significantly contributed to the popularization and dissemination of Pure Land ideology and Buddhist devotional practices throughout the Joseon, particularly from the mid-17th century onward.
