초록

이 글은 1980년대 후반 북한바로알기운동 무렵부터 1994년 김일성 사망까지 북한방문기의 출현과 그 의미를 고찰하고자 한다. 국제적으로 이념 갈등이 완화되고 화해의 분위기가 국내의 민주화 그리고 통일 열망과 맞물리면서 당대 대중운동의 이념과 계몽의 시선이 통일을 향했다. 주체사상 관련 각종 사상서와 이론서, 북한 관계 개설서, 통일 관련 자료집, 북한의 문예작품 등 다양한 출판물이 쏟아져 나왔다. 하지만 오래도록 반공분단체제에서 편향적이고 제한적으로 이루어진 연구 성과는 그 양과 별개로 신뢰하기 힘들었다. 이러한 때에 기존 북한체제 인식에 대한 괄목할 만한 최초의 도전은 북한을 다녀온 재미동포들의 북한방문기였다. 1970년대 후반 미국 지미 카터 대통령이 북한, 쿠바, 알바니아, 베트남 등 미국시민이 방문할 수 없었던 나라를 허용하면서 1980년부터 미국 교포가 북한을 방문하게 되었고, 한국에서도 7․7선언(1988)으로 해외동포 방북이 허용되었다. 북한방문기의 출현은 북한의 현실과 문화, 역사를 ‘객관적으로 이해’하고자 하는 욕망의 사회적 발현이자 통일을 위한 기본 토대의 구축과정이었다. 새삼스럽게 북한을 객관적으로 이해한다는 것은 기존 북한관의 전환을 의미했다. 당시 국내외적 상황은 냉전시대의 관성으로 내면화된 반통일적 의식과 정서를 정화하고 재조정해야 하는 전환기였다. 이러한 맥락에서 ‘북한방문기의 출현과 그 의미’를 대북관과 관련해 구명(究明)하고자 했다.

영어초록

This article is intended to examine the emergence and meaning of the visit to North Korea from the time of the North Korea Righteous Movement in the late 1980s to the death of Il-sung Kim in 1994. As the ideological conflict eased internationally and the mood of reconciliation coincided with the desire for democratization and unification at home, the ideology and enlightenment of the popular movement of the time were directed toward unification. Various publications, including various thought and theory books related to Self-reliance ideology, North Korea's opening of relations, a collection of materials related to unification, and North Korea's literary works, came out. However, long-standing, biased and limited research achievements in the anti-Communist system have been hard to trust apart from the amount. At this time, the first remarkable challenge to the recognition of the existing North Korean regime was the visit of Korean-Americans to the North. In the late 1970s, U.S. President Jimmy Carter allowed U.S. citizens to visit North Korea, Cuba, Albania, Vietnam where U.S. citizens could not visit, allowing Korean-Americans from the U.S. to visit North Korea from 1980 and South Korea to visit the North with the July 7th Declaration (1988). The emergence of the record of visit to North Korea was a social manifestation of the desire to “objectively understand” the reality, culture and history of the North and a process of establishing a basic foundation for reunification. An objective understanding of North Korea meant a shift in the existing view of North Korea. The situation at home and abroad at that time was a turning point in which anti-unification consciousness and sentiment, internalized by inertia of the Cold War era, had to be purified and readjusted. In this context, I seek to figure out about the ‘appearance of travel report of North Korea and its meaning’ in relation to the view on North Korea.
