내셔널리즘 자장 안에서의 동아시아적 상상과 남성성의 강화: 현대 한국 장르영화를 중심으로 (The East Asian Imagination and Strengthening of Masculinity within the Field of Nationalism: Focused on Modern Korean Genre Films)

초록

장르영화의 일반적인 공식은 상징적 질서의 외부를 상상하는 판타지적인 시공간을 창조하고 다시 그곳에서 빠져나와 그것을 봉합하는 과정으로 구성되어 있다. 이때 주인공은 그러한 일련의 과정의 중심에서 상징적 질서의 균열을 만드는 주체가 되기도 하고 반대로 무너져버린 상징적 질서를 다시 세우기도 한다.
그러나 최근 한국의 장르영화의 자장 안에서 공통적으로 발견할 수 있는 특징은 이와는 사뭇 달라 보인다. <아저씨>(2010, 이정범), <의형제>(2010, 장훈>, <황해> (2010, 나홍진), <베를린>(2012, 류승완), <도둑들>(2012, 최동훈), <공모자들> (2012, 김홍선), <신세계>(2012, 박훈정)와 같은 영화의 인물들은 이미 상징적 질서의 예외적 위치, 즉 주변부 외곽에 위치하고 있으며 내러티브가 진행됨에 따라 상징적 질서 내의 보편적 위치로 진입하게 된다. 또한 그들이 보편적인 상징적 질서 내부로 진입하는 과정에서 ‘외국인’의 역할이 두드러지게 나타나며 이러한 외국인들은 (동)아시아인들이 대부분이다. 그들은 끊임없이 상징적 질서로 봉합되는 것에 저항하며 그들의 모습과 계급도 다양한 방식으로 묘사된다. 그들의 재현은 한국 사회에서 갈등의 중심으로 묘사되며 그러한 갈등을 풀어나감에 있어 한국과 같은 보편적이라 상상되는 사회로부터의 배제와 포섭, 화해와 용서 등의 다양한 결과로 나타난다. 이러한 특징들을 통해 한국 사회를 구성하고 있는 한국의 남성성이 어떻게 다시 호명하고 있는가를 살펴볼 수 있으며 또한 다른 한편으로 한국 사회가 (동)아시아인들을 어떠한 방식으로 불러들이고 있는가를 알 수 있다.
IMF 이후 경제적인 관점에서 잉여 노동력이 된 한국의 남성들은 외부의 적을 상정하고 그들을 타자화 함으로써 자신의 영역을 침범해 오는 타자들과 싸우며 쓰러진 남성성을 극복하고 강화시키고 있다. 다시 말하면 한국사회의 남성성은 (동)아시아인들의 관계에서 벌어지는 폭력을 중심으로 내셔널리즘의 강화를 꾀하고 그와 함께 다시금 보편성을 가진 상징적 질서 내부로 진입하고자 하는 특징을 지니고 있는 것이다.
이러한 남성성의 강화는 새로운 형식의 내셔널리즘이 되고 또한 그것이 강화될 때 생성되는 타자는 인종적인 공격성으로 발전하기도 하고, 또는 그들을 포섭하기도 하며, 그들을 잠재적 위협으로 만들어내기도 한다. 따라서 지금의 한국 장르영화의 자장 안에서 내셔널리즘적 특징과 신자유주의에 대한 불안이 만나게 될 때 한국의 경제와 사회, 문화를 위협하고 있다고 생각되는 (동)아시아인들에 대한 적대성이 전면에 드러나게 된다. 그 결과 현대 한국의 장르영화는 그들을 타자로 규정해 섬멸하기도 하고 반대로 그들을 새로운 내셔널리즘의 파트너로 받아들이기도 하며 그들의 위협에 어떻게 대처해야 할 것인가를 끊임없이 고민하고 있는 것이다.

영어초록

The general equation of Genre films is composed of a process of creating a fantastic space and time imagining the exterior of symbolic order and then escaping from and suturing that place. The main character located in the center of this series of processes becomes the subject of creating a crack in the symbolic order and sometimes even re-builds the symbolic order that has been collapsed.
However, the characteristics commonly found in the field of recent Korean Genre films seem to be a bit different from this. The characters in the movies such as <The Man from Nowhere>(2010, Lee Jung Beom), <Secret Reunion> (2010, Jang Hoon), <The Yellow Sea>(2010, Na Hong Jin), <The Berlin File> (2012, Ryu Seung Wan), <The Professionals>(2012, Choi Dong Hoon), <Traffickers>(2012, Kim Hong Sun), and <New World>(2012, Park Hoon Jung) are already standing at an exceptional location of symbolic order, in other words, the exterior of that, and begin to enter a universal location within the symbolic order as the narrative progresses. Also, in entering into a universal and symbolic order, the role of the ‘foreigner’ begins to stand out in which most of these foreigners are (East)Asians. They continuously resist from suturing into a symbolic order and their appearances and classes are described in various ways. They are located in the center of the conflicts of the Korean society in terms of solving these conflicts, then result in the exclusion and inclusion, as well as reconciliation and forgiveness, etc. of the society imagined to be universal like that of Korea. Through these characteristics, the matter on how Korea’s masculinity is being addressed for composing Korea’s society can be found, on the other hand the matter on how the Korean society refers to the (East)Asians can be found out as well.
In an economic perspective after the IMF crisis, the men of Korea who have become redundant labor force postulate the exterior enemy and by otherizing them, they fight with the others who invade their territory while overcoming and strengthening their fallen masculinity. In other words, the masculinity of the Korean society makes an attempt of strengthening the nationalism centering the violence taking place in the relationship with the (East)Asians, and has the characteristics of again attempting to enter into the symbolic order of universality.
This strengthening of masculinity becomes a new form of nationalism and furthermore, the others that constructed in this process develop into a racial aggression, or embrace to the other side, and sometimes even are created as a potential threat. Therefore, when the characteristics of nationalism and the anxiety of neo-liberalism meet within the field of Korean genre films in this day, the hostility towards the (East)Asians who are thought to be a threat to Korea’s economy and society, as well as the culture comes to the front. As a result, modern Korean Genre films regulate them as others and wipe them out as well as accept them as partners of nationalism, which indicates the constant concerns of how to respond to their threats.
