초록

원대 至治3年(1323)에 중국 닝보(당시의 경원)을 출항해 일본 하카타로 향하던 도중 전라남도 신안 앞바다에서 침몰한 침몰선, 이른바 ‘신안선’에 대해 1976년부터 1984년까지 실시된 인양조사는 한국 수중고고학의 시작이었다고 할 수 있다. 신안선에는 대량의 중국 문물들이 실려 있어 당시의 동아시아 교역의 실체를 이해하는 데 매우 큰 역할을 했다. 방대한 양의 중국 도자들에 섞여 7점의 고려 청자도 발견되었는데 그 수량은 적지만 이 또한 큰 의미를 갖는다.
신안선에서 고려 청자가 발견된 것이 계기가 되어 1980년대 후반부터 중국 출토 고려 청자에 대한 관심이 점차 높아졌다. 그리고 2000년대 이후 특히 항저우와 닝보를 중심으로 절강 지역에서 상당한 수의 질 높은 다양한 고려 청자 파편이 출토되었다. 이를 통해 국제무역항인 닝보에 많은 고려 청자가 모여들었던 당시의 상황을 알 수 있다. 또한 남송의 도읍이었던 항저우(당시의 임안)의 궁정 유적에서 남송 궁정에서 사용됐던 매우 질이 높은 고려 청자가 다수 출토되어 남송 궁정에서 고려 청자가 높은 평가를 받았음을 말해주고 있다. 이렇게 닝보에 모여들었던 고려 청자의 일부가 신안선에 실려 일본으로 향했던 것이며, 일본에서 출토된 고려 청자의 상당수도 이렇게 중국을 경유해 전해졌을 가능성이 최근에 제기되고 있다. 다만 그 수가 적어 고려 청자가 과연 일본측의 주문에 의해 실린 것인지는 의문이며, 일본의 수요자측(직접 거래에 관여한 상인 등은 제외)이 당시 이렇게 들어온 고려 청자를 ‘고려 청자’로 인식했었음을 확인할 수 있는 흔적이 없어 고려 청자는 일본에서 넓은 의미의 ‘당물’로 수용되었던 것으로 추측된다.
북송의 서긍을 경탄케 한 고려 청자는 휘종을 비롯해 북송 궁정에도 전해졌는데 이러한 북송의 고려 청자에 대한 평가는 남송 궁정으로도 이어져 남송 궁정 관련 유적에서 최고급 고려 청자가 출토되고 있다. 여요와 관요 등 청자 문화가 절정에 달했던 송대에 고려 청자가 수용되어 여요와 관요 등과 함께 궁정에서 사용된 것은 외국산 도자로서는 파격적인 평가라 할 수 있다. 다양한 중국 도자의 영향을 받으면서 발전해 온 고려 청자가 이뤄낸 독자적인 아름다움이 거꾸로 청자의 본고장인 중국, 송나라 사람들에게 높은 평가를 받았으며 그 평가는 오랜 후까지 이어졌다. 중국에서 출토된 고려 청자는 이렇듯 중국에서 높은 평가를 받았음을 보여주는 귀중한 증거라 할 수 있다. 신안선에 실려 있던 고려 청자는 7점에 불과하지만 중국에서의 고려 청자에대한 평가를 잘 보여준다.

영어초록

Having departed from the port of Ningbo in China bound for Hakata in Japan, the Sinan vessel sank off the coast of Sinan, Jeollanam-do Province in 1323, the third year of Zhizhi’s reign, Yuan, China. The salvaging and study of the Sinan shipwreck from 1976 to 1984 could be considered the birth of Korean underwater archeology. The large number of Chinese products that were loaded on the Sinan has contributed greatly to our understanding of the reality of trade in East Asia at that time. Along with the large quantity of Chinese ceramics, the presence of Goryeo celadon, albeit only seven pieces, is also significant.
The discovery of Goryeo celadon from the Sinan shipwreck sparked gradual interest in Gogryo celadon excavated in China since the second half of the 1980s. Since the 2000s, a considerable number of Goryeo celadon shards of high quality have been excavated in Zhejiang Province, especially in Hangzhou and Ningbo. This signifies that at the time large quantities of Goryeo celadon were converging in Ningbo, an international trade port. In addition, many pieces of Goryeo celadon have been excavated at the court sites in Hangzhou (then called Lin'an), previously the capital of the Southern Song (南宋, 1127~1279) Dynasty. They were of the highest quality, which suggests that Goryeo celadon was highly appreciated in the court of the Southern Song court where they were presumably used. Recently, scholars argue that it is highly probable that the celadons shipped to Japan on the Sinan vessel had been collected in Ningbo, and that much of the Goryeo celadon excavated in Japan must have been delivered to Japan via China along this same route. But the quantity of Goryeo celadon is too small to confirm whether it was being shipped to Japan to order. Neither is there any evidence to confirm that Japanese customers considered this celadon ware as being from Goryeo, and thus in Japan they possibly were broadly assumed to be Chinese.
The Goryeo celadon that Xu Jing (徐兢, 1091~1153) had admired was introduced to Emperor Huizong (徽宗, r. 1100~1125) of Song as well as to the court of the Northern Song (北宋, 690~1127). The excavation of sites related to the Southern Song court has demonstrated that Goryeo celadon must have been of the highest quality, and that its appreciation continued in the court of the Southern Song. During the Song dynasties, Ru wares (汝窯) and Guan wares (官窯) were examples of celadon culture reaching its peak. The fact that Goryeo celadon wares were accepted and used at court alongside the Ru and Guan wares signifies that they were exceptionally appreciated as foreign ceramic wares. In other words, the unique aesthetics of Goryeo celadon, which had developed with influence from various Chinese ceramics, was then highly appreciated in return by people of the Song Dynasty, the home of celadon, and such appreciation lasted a very long time. The Goryeo celadon wares excavated in China are valuable evidence proving such Chinese appreciation. The seven pieces of Goryeo celadon found in the Sinan shipwreck, despite being small in number, are good examples of such appreciation.
