고대 철기생산기술의 발전과 남해안 도서지역 철기생산유적 (Development of Ancient Ironware production and remains of Ironware production in the Southern soast island area)

초록

한국 고대 철기생산과 유통은 단야에서 제련공정에 이르는 제철기술의 등장과 연동하여 발전한다. 고대의 철기생산은 크게 「단야 작업의 개시와 기술의 개량」, 「취락 내 철기생산과 제련공정의 등장」, 「생산 공정의 전문화와 국가단위 관리체계로의 전환」이라는 획기로 변화하며 지역성을 드러낸다. 특히 제련공정이 정착하는 4세기 이후가 되면 각각의 제철 공정이 유기적으로 연동되며 생산ㆍ유통된다.
필자는 단야공정을 중심으로 삼한 철기생산기술의 등장과 발전배경을 논한 바 있다. 이를 통해 남해안 도서지역을 중심으로 전개되는 변한 철기문화의 발전은 철기생산기술의 도입 이후 빠르게 독자적인 제련기술을 보유하게 되는 것과 관계가 깊다고 보았다. 그럼에도 아직까지 진ㆍ변한의 여러 지역 내 제련기술의 도입 시기를 상향할 직접적인 근거를 찾지 못하고 있다. 또한 남해안 도서지역에 위치하는 철기생산유구의 조사ㆍ보고가 불명확하다는 점 역시 문제점으로 지적되기도 한다. 그럼에도 기원 전후 진ㆍ변한권역 내 등장하는 독자성을 띠는 철제품의 면면이 가야의 그것들과 연관된다는 점을 고려한다면, 제련기술의 도입 시기 역시 같은 맥락에서 보아야 할 것이다.
한편 가야는 그들만의 특색을 보이는 다종다양한 철제품이 부장되고 있음에도 제철유적이 발견되는 사례는 많지 않다. 최근 김해, 창원지역을 중심으로 가야의 제철유적이 발견되고 있지만 무덤 내 철기의 부장량에 비하면 한정적이다. 본고는 진ㆍ변한과 가야 철기생산기술의 접점을 도서ㆍ해안지역의 패총 내 철기생산유적에서 찾고자 하였으며, 특히 부산 낙민동패총의 철기생산유구에 주목하였다. 더불어 4세기 이후 철정의 분포양상을 살피며 금관가야권역이 철정의 생산과 유통 중심지로서 그 확장성은 한반도 남부지역과 서일본 전역에 이른다는 점을 재확인하였다.

영어초록

Iron production in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula originated from simple smithery process such as recycling. Vestiges and remains from ancient sites related to iron production found in Naeseong, Busan, Gusan-dong, Gimhae, and Sacheon, Neugdo make inferences that iron products were produced and distributed along marine bases. Afterwards, the remains of Hwangseong-dong, Gyeongju shows a proper production of iron items in the region of Jinhan, which provides information as to the fact that much more sophisticated iron production technology already existed before the production within marine bases. Likewise, iron production centered around marine bases gradually evolved into specialized iron production technology. However, it is not known how the iron production technology of southern coastal islands was transformed into the inland iron technology such as in Gyeongju.
This dissertation investigates the process in which iron production centered around marine bases gradually evolved into specialized iron production technology, and attempts to trace the developments of continuous iron production technology from Byeonhan to Gaya. This project leads to reexamining vestiges, the slag, and the blower pipe related to Nakmin-dong shell mound, Dongrae, Seongsan shell mound, Masan and Dingeo-dong shell mound, Goseong, hitherto given scant attention.
The investigation leads to the inference that shell mound villages along the southern coastal islands gradually evolved into special groups with the production and distribution capacity, laying foundation of the iron technology of Geumgwan Gaya. In particular, this dissertation raises a possibility that Nakmin-dong shell mount, Busan equipped with the most advanced production process of the southern coastal islands, paved a way for the iron production technology of Geumgwan Gaya in the fourth century. In addition, iron nails, which had been widely spread to a wide range of inland regions, played an important role in transferring the iron production technology to the inland regions, which made Busan-Gimhae region become the central place of the production and distribution of iron nails, influenced by the iron production technology of the southern coastal islands.
