초록

영화제작환경에서 디지털기술의 접목을 통한 디지털시네마로의 진화는 110여년영화 역사가 체험하고 있는 가장 커다란 기술적 변화임이 분명하다. 영화의 원재료인필름에서 상영하는 공간인 극장에 이르는 다각적인 변화는‘필름’과‘영화관’이라는물리적 실체와 공간에서 기인한‘영화’의 범주 자체를 뒤바꾸고 있으며, 이에 따라미학적 고려에 매진해야할 영화제작인들은 새롭게 쏟아져 나오는 신기술의 늪에서혼란을 거듭하고 있는 현실이다. 특히 현재 기술 표준화에 대한 논의가 시장선점을중시하는 산업체 위주로 진행되고 있는 현실에서 다양한 디지털 포맷의 장점을 체험해온 국내 영화인들은 불확실한 미래의 표준화 포맷에 대해 더욱 심한 불안감을 안을수밖에 없을 것이다. 본 논문은 최근 디지털시네마의 기술적 혁명을 주도하고 있는 세부 기술들을 제작과 상영 및 배급 측면으로 나눠 고찰하고, 점점 다변화되어 가는 디지털 시네마의 제작 환경을 아우르기 위한 통합(Integration)과 전환(Transformation)의 기술적 가능성을 1) 아날로그에서 디지털로의 전환 기록 및 저장으로써의 디지털 촬영, 2) DI(Digital Intermediate)를 활용한 통합 취득 및 가공으로써의 디지털 후반작업, 3) 다양한 창구를 대상으로 한 전환의 과정으로써의 디지털 시네마 배급으로 분류하여 살펴봄으로써 실제 제작 인력들이 필수적으로 선택해야할 기술적 요소들에 대한 가이드라인을제공하게 될 것이다. 이는 앞으로 무수하게 펼쳐질 디지털 시네마의 기술들을 수직적으로 통합하여 매체 융합 환경에 적합한 콘텐츠를 창출해내고 이를 다양한 배급 창구로 전환 공유하는 미래 지향적 디지털시네마 패러다임 연구의 초석이 될 것이다.

영어초록

Today’s digital cinema revolution, the technology and acceptance of which is advancing with ever-greater speed, provides significant moment to the history of motion-picture technology which has not been changed for 110 years. This significant change from its artistic medium ‘film’to the place ‘theatre’where the motion-picture has been screened revolutionizes the terms of the film and cinema which is the word originated from its medium and the space to screen. Although new revolution of digital technology seems to provide promising blue print for the future of film industry, many filmmakers are still confused by adopting new digital technology, which alternates whole dimensions of their traditional artistic considerations. In addition, it is uncertain that the possibility of the standardization of the digital cinema technology which has been led by many commercial entities having different goals.
For this reason, the aim of this research paper is not only to present a technical discussion of the new current of digital technology but also to cover current working practice, and explain why certain things have to be done the way they are ? specially focusing on the concept of “Integration”and “Transformation” technology. This concept will provide new acquisition of understanding digital cinema work flow from production to distribution: 1) Digital Cinematographyanalog to digital conversion recording and storing, 2) Digital Post Productionintegrated acquisition of recorded digital media and editing process using DI(Digital Intermediate), and 3) Digital Distribution-conversion process for the multiple distribution windows. The detailed information of this paper will introduce essential guideline to help filmmakers who want to choose digital tools for their work. I hope that the content of this paper will inspire filmmakers to pursue their creative vision and use the tools of digital cinema to achieve their artistic goals by using vertically integrated motion-picture technology in media convergence environment.
