연구 성과를 통해 본『사서율곡언해』의의와 과제 (A Brief Review on the studies of Yulgok's annotation of the Four Books)

초록

본고는 『관본사서언해』와 『사서율곡언해』를 비교한 최근의 논문 성과를 검토한 것이다. 언해는 왕족과 사대부 자제들을 교육하기 위해 만들어진 것인데, 정부 관리가 되기 위한 시험에도 사용되었다. 관본은 1590년 간행되었고, 여러 차례 중간되어 널리 유통되었다. 그러나 율곡본은 관본보다 먼저 만들어지기는 했지만, 1749년 처음 간행되어 널리 전파되지 못하였다.
몇몇 국어학자들은 두 판본 사이에 문법이나 어휘에 다소 차이가 있을 뿐, 이념적이거나 정치적인 차이가 별로 없다고 한다. 반면, 몇몇 역사학자들은 두 판본 간에 당시 정파에 포함된 정치적 입장의 차이가 있다고 한다. 당대 논란이 많았던 대학의 격물 물격의 해석을 분석해보면, 두 판본 간에 심각한 차이는 발견하기 어렵다.
박세채는 관본이 평이하고 정확하지 않은 부분이 있다고 생각해서 율곡본을 손보아 간행하려 했지만 이루지 못하였다.
율곡본은 조선 시대에 널리 유포되지는 못했지만, 관본 못지않은 중요한 업적이다. 그것은 한국 유학사의 뛰어난 유산으로서 율곡본에 대한 연구를 좀 더 정밀하게 할 필요가 있다.

영어초록

This is to review the recent studies of the differences between the official edition(官本四書諺解) and Yulgok Lee I(李珥, 1536～1584)'s private edition(四書栗谷諺解) of the annotations of the Four Books(四書). The annotations seemed to be edited and published to educate the students of the literary class people including the royal family, which were also used to examine those who will be the government officials. The official edition was published firstly in 1590, republished many times and spread widely to be a popular one. But Yulgok's edition was published firstly in 1749 and spread not much, though it was completed earlier.
Some remarkable scholars of the Korean linguistics indicated there are not much differences between the two editions especially in ideological or political sense, but some differences in grammatical or wording aspects. However some historians used to say the two editions have the characteristics of the editors who were involved in two main schools at that time, which reflects their political disposition. Examining the two annotations generally and focussing on the famous phrase Gyeokmul(格物) Mulgyeok(物格) of Daehak(大學) which was a great philosophical topic at that time, we can not find any profound differences between the two editions. Park Sechae, a famous Neo-confucian scholar in 17th century, expressed his preference to Yulgok's edition which he tried to edit perfectly and publish but to fail. He criticized the official edition because of the plainness and the uncertainty in scholarly sense.
Though Yulgok's edition was not so popular and recognized much in Choseon dynasty, it was not so different from the official edition and as excellent as the latter. It also was one of the most brilliant cultural heritage in the history of Korean philosophy. We need to study carefully and estimate the value of the Yulgok's edition properly.
