초록

이 글은 조선시대 여성에 대한 감정 문화의 배경을 짚어보면서 가부장적 이데올로기에 순응하며 쓰인 열녀의 유서에 담긴 감정의 논리와 의도, 그 의미와 가치를 분석하고자 했다. 그 대상은 신씨 가문의 한 며느리(申氏婦/愼氏婦/辛氏婦)가 남편을 따라 죽으려 하면서 남긴 한글 유서 4통이다. 조선시대 여성에게 권장되었던 감정 규범은 ‘순종과 온화함(順與和)’이며, 자기 뜻대로 하지 않고 남을 ‘따르고 순응하는 것(從)’이었다. ‘열(烈)’은 남편을 따라가는 순종의 극단인데, 그러한 열행의 실천을 앞두고 쓰인 신씨부의 유서는 조선후기 여성에 대한 감정 규범을 ‘순응하며 위반하는’ 특징을 보여준다.
본고에서는 신씨부가 남긴 유서 4통 중에서 우선 친정 식구들인 ‘양자 내외, 딸 내외, 친정 오빠 내외’를 대상으로 쓴 유서 3통에서 ‘관계성에 따라 정교하게 조율된 감정’을 드러내고 있음을 살펴보았다. 이는 각각 유서를 받을 상대의 처지를 고려하고, 작자가 그 대상과 맺고 있는 관계의 깊이와 성격을 세심하게 배려하면서 자신의 감정을 조율하는 이성적인 측면을 보여주는 것이었다.
다음으로 시부모에게 남긴 유서 1통에서 ‘강렬하게 응축된 분노 감정’이 드러나고 있음을 살펴보았다. 분노 감정은 원래 위계적이며 젠더화된 감정이며, 특히 여성의 분노는 ‘편성(偏性)’으로 지목되는 비난의 대상이었다. 신씨부는 유서에서 시어른을 상대로 ‘원통함, 섭사옴, 속석님, 속이 타 흉악함’ 등의 감정을 거침없이 표현한다. 이는 조선 사회의 주요한 규범인 효에 배치(背馳)될 뿐 아니라 당대의 감정 규율을 정면으로 위반하는 감정이다. 본고는 신씨부의 이러한 분노 감정이 표면적으로 시부라는 개인을 향하고 있지만, 나아가 죽음을 눈앞에 둔 한 여성이 자신이 마주하고 있는 상황의 불합리성에 대한 분노를 내포하고 있다고 분석하였다.
개별자로서의 인간은 사회의 규범적 가치에 순응할 수밖에 없지만 그것이 일방적이고 폭력적이라는 감정을 느끼고 표현할 수는 있다. 본고는 신씨부 유서를 통해 열이라는 가부장적 이데올로기에 순응하는 행위로서의 죽음을 앞두고 쓴 열녀 유서가 오히려 체제에 도전하는 전복적 에너지를 내장하고 있다고 분석하였다.

영어초록

This study is to analyze the emotional language of chaste woman’s suicide note and examine its meaning and value. The intention of this study is to investigate to emotional background of Joseon Dynasty in the 19th century, also to inquire into the woman’s deep and complex mentality who is obedient to the Yeal ideology seemingly. During the Joseon Dynasty period, the recommended emotional norm for women was “Obeisance”. ‘Chaste (Yeol)’ is an extreme obedience to die with her husband. A suicide note left by a daughter-in-law of the Shin family was written with a determination to follow her husband in his death, and it was featured that “following but violating” the rules of emotional norm forced to women in the late of Joseon Dynasty.
Three of the four suicide notes left by the Shin family's daughter-in-law were left to her maiden homes’ family "her adapted son and his wife, daughter and her husband, and her brother’s and his wife. In here, the writer showed prudence and thoughtful affection, considered the situation of recipients of her suicide note first. She also showed that adjusting her feelings by considering the depth of the relationship without pouring her sadness and bitterness out first.
On the contrary, the other note left to her parents-in-law revealed her condensed emotion of anger. An anger is the emotion originally hiararchical and gendered. Especially woman’s anger is regarded as the emotion negative and blameful. It was because she protested that it was all her parents in-laws’ fault and not her own while explaining why she had to died years later than her husband in the note. However, these anger emotions offended against the filial piety, that is the main value of Joseon society, and the emotional norm of women in the Joseon Dynasty. In that sense, her suicide note. especially among the chaste women’s suicide notes, showed very rare and unique emotional depth.
People have no choice but to obey the norm of the society as an individual, however they can feel and express their outspoken emotion that is unjust and violent. In this article, her anger is an important background emotion of the suicide note. The expression of the woman’s anger was suppressed socially, but she couldn’t hide and showed it in her last writing called a suicide note. It was an unconscious anger on the irrationality and violence of the chastity ideology that forced to die with her the husband. Through this analysis, this article found that the female subject, the chaste women, showed her emotional energy against social order rather than conforming to patriarchal ideology.
