황지우 시에 재현된 육체의 기억과 리좀적 글쓰기 -5·18을 중심으로 (The Memories in the Body in Hwang Ji-Woo’s Poems and Rhizome Style Writing - Mainly from the 5·18 Movement)

초록

이 글은 황지우 시에 나타난 5·18의 기억과 리좀적 글쓰기의 특징을 알아보았다. 시인이 5·18을 어떤 방식으로 증언하고 있는지, 또 자신이 경험한 역사적 사건을 어떻게 시적 상상력과 결합하여 생성의 언어로 펼쳐내는지 그 양상과 시적 지향점을 알아보기 위하여 들뢰즈의 리좀적 글쓰기 방식을 참고하였다. 복수적 흐름을 통해 고착된 의미 작용을 해체하는 리좀적 상상력은 황지우 시에서 자의식(이성)의 붕괴 과정에서 실현되고 있다. 자의식이 붕괴된 자리에 출현하는 신체는 그 무의 지대에 웅크린 자아의 다른 모습으로서 그 재현 방식은 시기별로 조금 다르게 제시된다.
5·18과 근접한 1980년대의 시에서 자아는 시체와 같은 끔찍한 형상으로 드러난다. 이 시체와 함께 환기되는 광주는 군부독재라는 야만의 얼굴과 부서진 육체-시체들이 싸우는 일종의 전장이자 싸움터로 재현된다. 이 순간 시의 육체는 권력적 이성의 언어를 무화시키는 일종의 공백 지대가 되며, 시체는 군부독재- 국가-자본의 기율로 구축된 현실의 허구성을 가시화하는 시적 장치로 기능한다. 시체의 언어는 정상적 삶-주체의 관습적인 배치를 거부하고 비틀어버린다는 점에서 시적인 동시에 정치적인 언어가 된다. 시인은 삶과 죽음이 함께하는 어둠의 시공간을 통해 지나간 과거, 또는 죽은 자와 대면하고, 죽은 자들의 언어인 침묵이나 그들의 직접적 목소리를 통해 1980년 광주를 증언하고, 그 죽음을 서둘러 지워버리려는 망각의 정치에 저항한다. 이때 시의 육체는 광주를 증언하는 역사적 몸으로 환기된다.
1990년대에 이르러 시의 몸은 고통을 상실한 사물의 이미지로 드러난다. 여기에는 자본 권력과 공모하는 자아의 반성과 성찰이 함께한다. 정치적 이념이 휘발된 지대에서 사물화되어 가는 몸은 이념에 대한 환멸과 그 자리를 메우는 광증의 언어로 발화된다. 권태로 늘어져 탄력을 잃은 육체-사물은 더 이상 새로운 세계를 향한 열망이 존재하지 않는다. 모든 희망을 잃어버린 혼란 속에서 시적 육체는 무감각한 사물이 되고, 무질서하고 혼란스러운 세계는 광증으로 전이된다. 이렇게 균열된 의식은 국가-자본의 호명 시스템을 뚫고나가려는 분열자의 언어로 가시화된다. 이렇게 그려지는 시의 육체는 국가, 자본의 지배적 힘(권력)을 뚫고 나가려는 타자로서의 시인의 의식을 보여준다.
시체, 사물화된 육체는 우리 근현대사에서 일어난 내전의 흔적이자, 아픈 상흔이다. 이 육체-언어의 절망과 고통의 음성은 자본의 훈육방식에 길들여져 현실과 역사를 망각하고 사는 오늘날 우리의 삶뿐 아니라, 자본의 시계(視界) 밖으로 넘어서지 못하는 시 쓰기의 방식에 대해서도 새롭게 성찰할 기회를 제공해준다.

영어초록

The central focus of the current inquiry shall be drawn from memories of the 5·18 Movement within Hwang Jiwoo’s poetic body of work, specifically as they express themselves in the Rhizome writing style. The Rhizome writing style refers to the writing style arising from Deleuze. Hwang Jiwoo’s development of a creative language provides him with a poetic imagination which he experienced from the 5·18 Movement. Rhizome writing styles, which seek to dismantle the notion of fixed meaning and replace it with more pluralistic approaches to meaning, is realized by means of a sense of lost reason and collapsed identity. In his poetry, the body is a common reference to identity and self, often portrayed as inhabiting empty zones, making multiple appearances in multiple contexts, but portrayed in a slightly different light each time.
In Hwang Jiwoo’s poems of 1980s, closer, temporally, to the events surrounding the 5·18 Movement, the self / ego is consistently portrayed as a terrible figure, such as a corpse. The events surrounding the Gwangju Uprising, at the core of the 5·18 Movement, is reenacted in this corpse, a battlefield where the savage face of military dictatorship fights with its own body. In so doing, the body of the poem is rendered as a semantic vacuum, where the powerful language of reason becomes meaningless, and the corpse must use the functions of poetic language, visualizing the fictional reality of the order underlying military dictatorships, nations, and capital. The corpse, by rejecting and twisting the conventional language of “normal life”, develops a language by which to express the poetic and the political. The poet enters a dark passage in which life and death coexist within the same body, and this allows him to confront the past in the silence of the dead witnesses to the Gwangju Uprising. This language of the dead, may take the form of silence, or the form of a more direct voice, resisting the politics of oblivion that would otherwise quickly erase the fact of their death. At this time, the body of the poem is aroused as a historical body testifying to Gwangju.
In the 1990s, the body within HwangJiwoo’s poetry reveals itself in the image of a being incapable of pain. Here self-reflection and self-examination are capacities given to inhuman concepts, such as authority and ideology. In the absence of political ideology, the material body is spoken as disillusion for ideology and a descent into a language of lunacy that merely fills the space. This results in an inelastic body, one which has no passion for new worlds, and is a senseless object in the hopeless chaos of a disordered and confused world. Sense is broken, and must express itself through the language of those who have been shocked to the point of madness and collapse, but this broken sense still tries to express itself by means of the dominant language. The body, drawn in these terms, expresses the poet’s consciousness through the eyes of those who are eager to pass through the dominant forces of nations and capital that control its world. The material corpse is not only a reminder of civil war, but an aching scar of an event that remains part of our modern history. The despair the body feels in its search for language provides us with the opportunity for introspection regarding both our contemporary lives – in which we often forget the reality behind our sense of history – and our approach to poetry, where the greatest profit we achieve is one that is not easily measured in terms of capital.
