임화 시에 나타난 “태평양”의 의미 연구 (The meaning of the “Pacific Ocean” in Hwa Lim’s Poems)

초록

이 연구는 임화의 시들 중 바다가 등장하는 시편들에서 그동안 주목받지 못한 “태평양”의 의미를 살펴보고자 하는 시도이다. 임화의 시에 등장하는 바다는 “태평양”과 “현해탄”이다. 그런데 기존의 연구에서는 “태평양”의 의미에 대해서 연구된 바가 없다. 본 연구는 기존의 논의에서 ‘바다’ 시편들로 분류되는 시들에 더해 “태평양”이란 해양명이 등장하는 「우산 받은 요코하마 부두」를 포함시켜 임화 시에 나타난 “태평양”의 의미를 분석하였다.
「우산 받은 요코하마 부두」는 「비내리는 시나가와驛」의 답시로 이 시의 내적인 구조인 귀환의 구조를 내재하고 있다. 그런데 임화는 이 귀환의 구조의 한축에“태평양”을 두었다. 임화는 당시 요코하마에서 조선으로 가는 배가 없는 상태임에도 시에서는 이러한 항로를 상정한다. 임화는 여기에 “추방”의 바다로서 “태평양”을 자리매김하고 이 “추방”의 바다를 통해서만 고국에 귀환할 수 있다고 노래했다. 그때에 임화가 노래하는“추방”은 “연대의 가능성”을 여는 의미를 내포하는 것이었다. 「우산 받은 요코하마 부두」에서의 귀환은 요코하마에서의 계급 연대를 이루는 것이었던 것이다. 그래서 이 시에서 귀환의 구조는 일본에서 시작해 조선을 거쳐 일본으로 돌아오는 구조였다. 임화는 이러한 귀환을 통해 새로운 가능성인 프롤레타리아 해방과 계급 연대를 이루어낼 수 있다고 생각한 것이다. 임화는 이를 위해 시적 상상력을 통해서 “태평양”에 상상의 항로를 개척하려고 했다.
이러한 시적 도정은 카프 해산과 같은 시련을 겪은 후에도 임화에게서 지속되고 있었다. 프롤레타리아 해방과 계급 연대의 가능성이 희박해진 때에 임화는 “현해탄” 연작을 통해 기존의 귀환 구조를 변화시킨다. 여기서 큰 힘을 제공하는 것도 “태평양”이다. 이때에 “태평양”은 귀환의 바다로 우리에게 주어진다. “태평양”은 이전의 귀환의 구조를 변화시켜 조선에서 시작해 조선으로 돌아오는 귀환의 구조를 시적으로 형성하도록 이끈다. 여기에서 “태평양”은 호명되는 바다인데 묘사되지 않고 내밀하게 주어지는 가능성으로 나타난다. “추방”의 바다였던 “태평양”은 이 “추방”의 항로를 내재함으로써 “가능성”의 바다로 마주할 수 있게 되었던 것이다.
이 결과에 따라 “현해탄 콤플렉스”의 근간으로 이해된 “현해”의 내적 구조가 사실은 그와는 다른 구조를 가지고 있음이 드러났다. “현해”는“태평양”이 밀려들어오는 장소이고 이에 따라 조선 또한 이러한 영향 아래 있는 장소로 변모함을 밝힐 수 있었다. 그것은 외양적으로는 임화가 추구하였던 사상, 즉 프롤레타리아 해방과 계급 연대였지만 내적으로는 이것의 실현 불가능함에 근거해 끊임없이 가능성을 호출하려는 시도에서 의해 내적으로는 “가능성”의 차원으로 우리 앞에 귀환하는 힘이었음 드러낼 수 있었다. 이 “가능성”을 귀환시키는 힘, 그것은 로맨티시즘의 외양을 지닌 상상력이란 힘이었다.
결론적으로 임화 시에서 “태평양”은 미래를 사유하는 것을 가능하게 한 매개체이며 미래를 현재에 귀환하도록 이끄는 그러한 의미를 지닌 시어였던 것이다. 이런 점을 살펴볼 때 현해탄 콤플렉스에 기반한 임화의 시에 대한 기존의 평가는 달라져야 할 필요가 있다고 판단된다.

영어초록

This study attempts to examine the significance of “the Pacific Ocean” in Hwa Lim’s poems, which has been rarely received discussed compared to his other works. Although Hwa Lim exhibits both the “Pacific Ocean” and “Korean Strait” when depicting of the sea, the current research has often overlooked the meaning of “Pacific Ocean”. This study extends the established category of his poems on the sea by introducing and analyzing “The Habor of Yokohama under an Umbrella”, which mentions the name “Pacific Ocean”.
“The Habor of Yokohama under an Umbrella” is a poem written as a response to “Raining Sinagawa Station”, and it suggests the way how he structures a form of return. The sense of the return in the poem is internalized. Hwa Lim places “Pacific Ocean” on one side of his structure of the return. Despite the absence of a passage from Yokohama to Chosun at his time, Hwa Lim offers this route in his poem. Here, he provides the sense of “exile” in the notion of the sea by introducing “Pacific Ocean” and sings that one’s return is only possible by the sea of exile. What Hwa Lim means by the exile involves the sense that opens up a new possibility of solidarity. The return in “The Habor of Yokohama under an Umbrella” enables the agreement between the classes. Thus, the structure of the return in the poem starts from Japan and returns to Japan via Chosun. It was Hwa Lim’s idea that one could realize solidarity and the liberation of the proletariat by such mode of the return. To do this, he attempts to venture an imaginative passage through his way of poetic imagination.
Hwa Lim continues this project even as experiencing difficulties such as the dissolution of KAPF. When the chances became scarce to hope the solidarity and the liberation of the proletariat, he reverses the way in which his contemporaries depict the structure of the return by writing the series of “Korean Strait”. Indeed, it is "the Pacific Ocean” that provides considerable power in this attempt. “The Pacific Ocean” is given to us as the sea of return. It transforms the established structure of return and leads it to form itself poetically, that is, departure from Chosun and return to Chosun. The “Pacific Ocean”, though of which name is called in the poem, it is not illustrated, but rather appears as a possibility subtly given to us. By internalizing the passage of exile, “the Pacific Ocean”, which was the sea of exile, now becomes a subject that one could encounter as the sea of “possibility”.
In light of this, it could be suggested that “Korean Strait”, previously understood as the basis of the “Korean Strait complex”, in fact, bears a different sense in its inner structure. “Korean Strait” is where “Pacific Ocean” flows in, which allows access to Chosun as a place under the influence of such current. At a superficial level, it shows Hwa Lim’s idea, the liberation of the proletariat and the solidarity of the classes. Underneath the level, it engages with the power that returns to us as the dimension of a “possibility”. He constantly summons up the possibility, as a result of his awareness of the “impossibility” of realizing his idea in reality. This power that recalls the “possibility” is imagination, of which its appearance features Romanticism.
To conclude, “Pacific Ocean” serves as a medium in Hwa Lim’s poems. It is a poetic word that bears significance in leading the future to the present. Given these points, this paper proposes that the current studies on Hwa Lim, which often analyzes his poems based on Korean Strait complex, should take a different approach and reassess them.
