초록

이 논문은 구례 유씨가의 일기 분석을 통하여, 부계중심의 성리학적 친족질서가 정착했을 것이라는 통념과 달리, 한말-일제하 양변적 친족관계를 보여주는 사례들을 제시한다. 표면적으로는 부계우위사상으로 소외되었음직한 사위의 위상과 존재는, 내부적으로는 지속적인 처가왕래를 통하여 부계화 관련 일정 역할을 하고 있음을 밝혀내었다. 딸들에 비해 사위들은 처가를 빈번히 왕래하며 단순한 인사차 방문 뿐 아니라 다양한 차원의 교류를 하고 있었다. 재혼 후에도 사위들은 전(前)처가인 유씨가와의 인연을 지속하여, 조카에게는 심리적 의지처가 되어주며 경제적으로 서로 돕고 있었다. 장인 또한 사위들의 재취소생의 외손들의 교육과 혼례 등에 도움을 주었다. 사위들이 처가와 가까운 관계를 형성할 수 있었던 이면에는 처가와 가까이 살고 있었던 점, 유씨가와 오랫동안 알고 지냈던 사이라는 점, 그리고 양반 지역민들끼리의 계모임과 시회를 통한 경제-문화적 교류가 있었던 것을 들 수 있다. 사위-고모부와 처족들 간에 물질적 교류와 심리적 연결을 보여주는 이 연구 결과가 시사하는 바는, 성리학자들이 추구했던 부계위주의 이념과는 달리 한말-일제하 유씨가에서는 양변적 친족 관행을 볼 수 있으며, 비부계친과의 경제-문화-정서적인 자원의 교류를 동원하여 혈족의 부계화를 도모하였다는 것이다.

영어초록

This paper presents examples of bilateral kinship during the late Korean empire and Japanese ruling period through an analysis of Gurye(求禮) Ryu(柳)’s diary, contradicting the conventional interpretation that the patriarchal Neo-Confucianists would have reached. Contrary to ideology such as chul-ga-oei-in(出嫁外人), according to which Neo-Confucian scholars emphasized that the daughter in Yangban who got married cut off all relations with her family, the married daughter in Ryu who lived near her parents visited her family house either on short or long vacations. On the surface, the status and existence of the son-in-law, who would have been alienated by the patriarchal order, contributed to patrilineal transformation internally through continuous interaction with the in-laws. Compared to the daughters, sons-in- law frequently visited their wife’s family, not only to greet them but also to exchange economic and cultural resources. Even after remarriage following their wife’s death, sons-in-law continued their relationship with their ex-wife’s family, becoming a psychological and emotional support for their nephews-in- law and helping each other economically. The father-in-law also helped with the son-in-law’s children’s education and weddings. Some of the reasons the son-in-law was able to form a close relationship with his wife’s family include that it was not far away geographically, that they had known Ryu for a long time (over generations), and that it was through Korean traditional private funding and poetry meetings. Material exchanges and psychological connections between non-paternal relatives like sons－and fathers-in-law suggest that unlike the patriarchal ideology highlighted by the Neo-Confucianists, the results of analysis of the Gurye Ryu family’s diary during the Japanese colonial era reveal that a bilateral kinship custom was persistent and that each kin promoted their own patrilineal transformation through economic-cultural resource exchanges in terms of strategic mobilization.
