상쇠 '홍박씨'와 무당 '명두' 비교 (A Comparative Study of Sangsoe’s ‘Hongbakssi’ and Shaman’s ‘Myeongdu’)

초록

우리나라에서 거울의 유래는 환웅이 天符印 세 개(거울, 칼, 방울)를 가지고 인간세상에 내려왔다는 데서 찾을 수 있다. 그 중 거울은 우리나라 뿐 아니라 중국과 일본에서도 주술적인 기물로 여겨지는 경우가 많다. 특히 놋쇠로 만든 둥근 거울 형태인 무당의 거울은 ‘동경’ 또는 ‘명두’라 하여 신의 얼굴로 간주되는 신령스러운 무구로서 무당의 권위를 나타내는 상징이다.
무속에서 신성하게 여겨지는 거울인 ‘명두’와 유사한 것을 우리나라 농악대 상쇠가 입은 옷에서 찾아볼 수 있다. ‘홍박씨’ 또는 ‘공모’라고도 불리는 이 거울을 농악의우두머리인 상쇠가 복식을 갖춰 입을 때 등에 붙인다.
농악에서 상쇠는 수십 명의 구성원을 진두지휘하는 대장의 역할을 할 뿐 아니라,당산제나 동제 그리고 지신밟기 등에서 제(祭)를 주관하는 제관의 모습을 띤다. 즉마을 사람들의 뜻을 하늘에 고하고 정성을 바치는 의례를 바로 상쇠가 주도하는 것이다. 농악의 상쇠가 이러한 제관 또는 신관의 역할을 하는 사제자의 성격이 있음은 주지한 바 있으나 아직 연구가 제대로 진행된 바는 없다.
이 글은 상쇠가 옷의 등 쪽에 일명 ‘홍박씨’라고 하는 거울 모양의 쇠붙이를 다는현상에 대한 기존 자료를 일정 정도 종합화하였다. 그리고 상쇠의 ‘홍박씨’와 무당의신성한 거울인 ‘명두’를 비교하여 유사한 형태의 두 거울이 농악과 무속에서 어떠한의미와 기능을 지니는지 살펴보았다.
기존의 지료를 통해 살펴보면, 상쇠가 옷의 등에 붙이는 거울 모양 장식의 명칭은 ‘일월’ ‘공모’ ‘홍박씨’ ‘함박씨’ 등 다양하다. 이것들에 대해 일명 ‘상쇠 거울’이라는함의적 명칭을 부여하였으며, 상쇠 거울과 달리 상쇠가 등에 여러 가지 색 천을 드리는 것은 상쇠 거울의 변형인 점을 밝혔다.
상쇠 거울과 무당의 명두를 비교한 결과 공통점은 첫째, 특정 개인이 소유할 수없는 신성한 기물이라는 점 둘째, 일월과 깊은 관련이 있어 사제자적인 성격을 공유하고 있다는 점 셋째, 점차 소멸의 속도가 높을 것이라는 것을 꼽았다.
한편 상쇠의 거울은 보다 집단적인 상징이지만 무당의 명두는 지극히 개인적인 상징이자 무구라는 점을 차이점으로 보았다. 또 상쇠의 거울은 호남과 영남지역에 주로전승되는 유물이며, 무당의 명두는 강신무권인 평안도․황해도․서울 북부에서 전승되는 유물이어서 상쇠 거울과 무당의 명두는 지역적으로 배타성을 띠고 있다는 것을발견하였다.
이렇게 상쇠 거울을 통해 상쇠의 사제자적 역할이 일정정도 밝혀졌다고 여겨지는데, 이 연구를 시작으로 무당과 더불어 상쇠가 민간신앙의 사제자로서 역할을 담당해왔음을 앞으로의 연구과제로 삼고자 한다.

영어초록

The origin of mirror in Korea can be found from the myth that Hwanung(Son of Heaven) came down to the human world with three Cheonbuin(天符印, the mirror, knife, and bell). Among the objects, mirror is often regarded as a shamanistic object not just in Korea but in China and Japan as well. Particularly, the shaman’s round mirror made of brass is called as ‘Donggyeong(the bronze mirror)’ or ‘Myeongdu’. It is a divine shamanistic tool regarded as the face of god and is the symbol of shaman’s authority.
Mirror regarded divine in shamanism is similar to ‘Myeongdu’, this can be found from the costume that Sangsoe of the Nongak Band in Korea wears.
This mirror called as ‘Hongbakssi’ or ‘Gongmo’ is attached to the back when Sangsoe, the head of Nongak, puts on his costume.
In Nongak(traditional Korean music performed by farmers), Sangsoe plays a role as the head who leads tens of the members, and also he works as the ritual chief who supervises the rituals such as Dangsan-je, Dong-je, or Jisinbalggi(treading the earth spirits). In other words, the ritual for the villagers to ask their wish to god and show their sincerity is led by the very Sangsoe. It has been recognized that Sangsoe of Nongak plays the priest’s roles like the ritual chief or the divine chief; however, research on it has been hardly conducted so far.
This article has synthesized for some extent the existing materials about the phenomenon that Sangsoe attaches ‘Hongbakssi’, the iron shaped as a mirror,to the back of his costume. And comparing Sangsoe’s ‘Hongbakssi’ and shaman’s divine mirror, ‘Myeongdu’, this study has examined what meanings and functions the two types of similar mirrors have in Nongak and shamanism.
According to the existing literatures, the mirror-shaped ornaments attached to Sangsoe’s costume are called as many names like ‘Ilwol(the Sun and the Moon)’, ‘Gongmo’, ‘Hongbakssi’, or ‘Hambakssi’. The names imply the meaning of ‘Sangsoe’s mirror’. Unlike Sangsoe’s mirror, it was found that Sangsoe’s having of cloth with various colors on his back is the alteration of Sangsoe’s mirror.
According to the result of comparing Sangsoe’s mirror and shaman’s Myeongdu, they share some points in common as follows : first, they are the divine objects which any ordinary person cannot possess; second, they share the priest’s characteristics deeply related with Ilwol; third, they will show the high rate of extinction afterwards.
Meanwhile, Sangsoe’s mirror is rather a collectivistic symbol, but shaman’s Myeongdu is different from it in that it is a fairly personal symbol and a shamanistic tool. And Sangsoe’s mirror is the remains chiefly transmitted in Honam and Yeongnam regions. But shaman’s Myeongdu is the remains transmitted in Gangsinmugwon including Pyeongan-do, Hwanghae-do, or Northern Seoul. It was found that Sangsoe’s mirror and shaman’s Myeongdu have their own regional exclusiveness.
It is thought that from Sangsoe’s mirror, some of the priest’s roles of Sangsoe have been verified. With this research as a start, follow-up research will have to deal with the fact that Sangsoe as well as shamans did play the priest’s roles in folk religion of Korea.
