The purpose of this study is to analyze the vocabulary in Gwangjebigeup Hyangyak Osipjongchibeop which is UC Berkeley and Gwangjebigeup which was published in 1790 by classifying the words into Hyangyak terminology and other vocabulary. The conclusion is summarizing the discussion.
First, The source text of UC Berkeley version is the 'Hangyak danbangchiheom' of Gwangjebigeup vol. Ⅳ, and was composed of two books(乾,坤) which are made through translating Gwangjebigeup vol. Ⅳ into Korean. Now the one book(乾) is extant. But there is no proof who was the translator or transcriber.
Second, There is no doubt that this book was transcribed after 18th century at the least, because the source text was published in 1790. And according to phonological phenomena-the alternation of ‘ㄹㄹ’ into ‘ㄹㄴ’, duplicate writing of final consonant, labialization, palatalization, this book is thought to reflect Korean after the last years of the 18th century. But in the point of view of lexicology, the presumption of manuscription time is difficult because this book covered the Modern Korean vocabulary rarely. But it is sure that this book reflects some dialects of transcriber and involved many words which could not find in other books or dictionary.
Third, pure Korean Hyangyak terminology that were not found in other medicine books are ‘seunggamcho, soebideum, hwanggyeongnamu, gulgeunkong, bulgeunjanphach, budeuljonguigoch, keunmaneul, chamssuk, jwisonpul, bupyeongmareum, chosyeogi, chamdae, dangjwiyeom, waksae, yeonbap, hyeonggaepul, danggwikkori, gobaekban, chosamnok, jigeomi, nureunbori, kkochdaji, jjokmaneul, amjwiddong, bisddae, saengjopssalbap, jinawi, soemareunddong, naphyangdoyajigireum, myeojusok, bungamcho, muldosgogi, soeyaji, damdugu, ddondeongi, pasoknureungogaengi’. Hyangyak terminology which seemed to be dialect type are ‘geomdai, doekgori, doesgomi, meorikkeul, monji, bosjang, meyeokuichum, seunauiojom. And Chinese names are ‘薥米, 泡水, 京墨, 烏豆, 黃明膠, 東流水, 黃麥, 油髮灰, 地漿蒜水, 滄塩, 豉湯’. The words which is difficult to figure out the form and meaning are ‘biramyeon’.
Forth, the general words which must be registered in dictionary are ‘gogisil, ushaneul, pissaragi, dollimyeokjil, dolmungchi, mulsaengseon, bbul, noknani, deungmal, gariddae, daekeon, jilcheokhada, jaji, tunggeureus’. Also dialect words are ‘gyeopbul, gop, mungtunghada, beongeoriro, bisguro, gakguro, saeksseuda, jjoksukgarak, jageunsuksul, eojireuchida, ipseuri, jopda, juyeoneohda, komaro, The words which is difficult to figure out the form and meaning are ‘sinreulbeolle’.
The special aspect about the UC Berkeley version is that this book contains many rare and unusual words. Furthermore these words must be registered the dictionary, and the meaning of lexical history should be described. This will allow database establishment and systematic description of Hyangyak terminology. Also the time of transcription must be revealed by accurate phonological analysis. These work will contribute to the extension of Korean and the description of Korean lexicon system.
