초록

구석기 시대이후 몇 점되지 않는 토우 유물에 비해고 신라의 토우는 당시의 시대상을 가늠하여 볼 수있을 정도로 그 양이 풍부함은 그 자체가 우리문화에큰 가치가 있다고 하겠다. Vol.18, No.1 March. 2012한국디자인문화학회지362본 연구는 고신라의 토우를 살펴봄으로써 신라인의삶과 예술을 연구하여 고려와 조선의 예술세계에 영향을 미친것이 무엇인가를 찾아보는데 그 목적이 있다.
본 연구의 주된 범위와 내용에는 신라토우의 생성과 의미 등에 관한 이론적 고찰, 제작기법에 따른 유형분류와 조형적 의미 분석, 그리고 신라인의 미적 센스, 즉 미감에 관한 연구 내용이 포함되어진다.
연구방법은 인터넷을 이용한 국내외 정보 D/B 및네트워크 검색, 논문과 단행본을 포함한 도서ㆍ출판물등 문헌조사를 통한 고찰 및 분석이 이루어졌다.
신라의 토우는 다양한 형태로 보여 지는데 형태가갖고 있는 그 자체로의 조각에 대한 개념보다는 주술적(呪術的)인 의미가 가미(加味) 되어 무덤에 부장품으로 함께 뭍은 명기(明器)로서의 그 역할이 분명하다하겠다. 사후세계에서도 현세와 같이 삶이 연속된다고믿고 있던 신라의 내세관(來世觀)사상은 무덤 속에 현세에서 생활하던 일상의 즐거움과 이루고자 했던 염원 등을 담으면 죽어서도 계속 현세의 생활을 영유할수 있다고 믿고 풍요와 다산, 행복을 기원하고자 하는의도에서 토우가 제작되었음을 알 수 있다.
이러한 이유에서 신라의 토우는 죽은 자가 생활 하던 일상을 그대로 옮겨 놓은 듯 생활에 녹아 있는 생전의 생활에서 함께 하던 것들이 제작된 듯하다.
신라의 토우는 토기에 부착된 것이나 독립적으로만들어 진 것이나 대부분이 형태가 변형되고 과장되어 있으며, 남자와 여자의 성기가 지나치게 과장되어있고 성애를 하고 있는 장면은 자유분방한 신라인의성생활로 오해를 할 수도 있을 정도로 솔직하게 표현되고 있다. 이외에도 동물형 토우에서도 특징적 요소만을 강조하여 대상을 표현하고 있는 신라인들의 미감은 파격적이고 생명력이 돋보이고 있으며, 내용을떠난 형태상으로만 보면 해학적인 면이 다분하다고할 수 있겠다.
여성의 유방과 성기, 둔부, 남성의 성기를 과대하게표현 하고 성애상, 물고기 등 여러 가지 동물들을 제작한 것은 형태에서 보여 지는 직접적인 해석 보다다산과 풍요를 기원하는 내용을 담고 있다.
신라토우가 어린아이가 장난하듯 단순하고 서툴러보여도 단순함 속에 과장과 왜곡이 함께하고, 단순함과 과장과 왜곡 속에 신라인의 해학이 깃들어져 있으며, 이러한 꾸밈없는 솔직함에 순수성이 들여다보인다하겠다. 이러한 신라의 토우에서 보이는 신라인의 미감은 고려와 조선으로 이어져 우리 민족문화의 고유의독자적인 예술성으로 이어져 오고 있다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

Unlike a few of clay figures created after the Old Stone Age, Shilla’s clay figures, which were found enough to conjecture the indications of the age, are considerably worthwhile in our culture.
This study aims to find out the artistic influence which was affect on Goryo and Joseon Dynasty through considering ancient clay figures reflected their daily lives and artistic value in Shilla.
Main scopes and contents of this article are formed with a theoretical consideration of origins and meaning of clay figures in Shilla, analysis of classification by product methods and its formative beauty, and research to its artistic value, in other words aesthetic value.
The main method of this article is to contemplate and analyze the data from Internet D/B in domestic and abroad, and variety of literatures including thesis,books, periodicals and the other publications.
Shilla’s clay figures appear in various shapes.
But, in fact. their role is very clear as grave goods in the aspect that the meaning of enchantment rather than the concept of a sculpture included in their shapes is added into them. It is found that the production of Shilla’s clay figures is based on Shilla people’s view of afterlife in which the future life after death exists like the life in this world. Shilla people created clay figures in order to pray for fertility, fecundity, and happiness, in the belief that as their daily pleasure and wish in this world would be included in their grave, they could continue to enjoy the life in this world after death.
For the reason, Shilla’s clay figures, which look as if the daily life that dead persons once had in their lifetime was showed as it was, seemed to be created, reflecting what the dead persons were with in their lifetime.
Shilla’s clay figures were either attached to earthenware or independently created. But, most of their shapes were changed or exaggerated. The genital organs of female and male clay figures were exaggerated. The shape of sexual love was expressed frankly enough to make people misunderstood that the Shilla people enjoyed unrestrained sexual life. In addition, the animal shaped clay figures, whose special characteristics were emphasized to express the objects, show Shilla people’s unconventional and energetic aesthetic sense,and their shapes excluding their contents imply humorous aspects.
The female breast, buttock and genital organ,and male genital organ were also exaggeratedly expressed. And the production of various animals such as sexual love figure and fish figure more implies fecundity and fertility than is directly interpreted as its shape is.
Although Shilla’s clay figures look simple and coarse as children’s playing, they include exaggeration and distortion in their simplicity. Also, Shilla people’s humor is included in the simplicity, exaggeration and distortion. Therefore, the simple frankness reflects their pureness. Shilla people’s aesthetic sense viewed through Shilla’s clay figures had been handed down to Gorye and Joseon, having led to our people’s cultural unique and artistic beauty up to now.
