‘연애의 시대’ 이전: 1910년대 신소설에 나타난 사랑의 표상- 최찬식 신소설을 중심으로 (Before the era of Yeonae: Representation of love in 1910's Sinsoseol focusing on Choi Chansik's works)

초록

사랑의 감정과 사랑하는 두 개인의 관계는 문화 텍스트가 위치한 맥락에 따라 다르게 표상된다. 예컨대 조선시대 애정소설에서 사랑은 순간적 매혹의 감정과 성애(性愛)적 욕망을 중심에 두고 <만남-헤어짐-재회>의 국면으로 구체화되는 관계로 표상되었다. 1900년대 신소설에서는 매혹의 감정과 성애의 욕망이 소거된 자리에 공동체적 연대의 감정과 공적 의지가 등장하고, <만남-교육-결혼>이라는 새로운 발전적 관계 양태가 제시되었다. 그리고 1910년대 신소설에서는 다시 남녀 사이에 발생하는 감정의 문제로 돌아가 사랑이 표상되는 경향이 나타난다. 본 논문에서는 1900년대의 ‘차가운 계약’과 1920년대 ‘뜨거운 열정, 죽음으로 이어지는 비극적 관계’ 사이에 위치한 1910년대 신소설에 나타난 사랑의 표상을 탐구하고자 했다.
1910년대 소설에 나타난 사랑은 특정 담론의 문화적 반영물이 아니라 『쌍옥루』, 『장한몽』, 『눈물』 등 대중소설계에 공존했던 다른 텍스트들과의 상호텍스트성을 통해 습득되고 구체화된 표상이라 할 수 있다. 1910년대 소설에서 남녀의 사랑은 양과 강도(强度)를 통해 감각적으로 형상화되는 감정을 구심에 두고 표상된다. 『눈물』에서 사랑은 시간이 지남에 따라 증량되고 강렬해지는 감정으로 표현되었다. 이는 인물 스스로도 해득할 수 없는 것으로 느껴지므로, 이와 같은 사랑의 표상을 통해 이성과 감정에 의해 분점된 주체 상이 가시화된다. 『추월색』 역시 강렬한 감정을 구심에 두고 사랑을 표상하며, 이 때 사랑은 ‘상사(相思)’와 같이 좌절되면 ‘병’으로 심화될 수도 있는 불안정의 징후를 띠고 나타난다. 또한 『추월색』은 사랑을 이해타산이 개입된 사회적 관계인 혼사와 대조함으로써 순수한 것으로 표현한다. 사랑의 순수성은 그것이 사회적 위상의 차이에 따라 이성적으로 조정될 수 없고 한 사람에게 향한 이상 불변한다는 자질로부터 획득된다. 『안의 성』은 감정의 발생과 성숙을 분별하는 주체의 내면을 제시하고, 인물을 성광(成狂)에 이르게 하는 ‘상사병’적 체험을 가시화함으로써 주체가 통제하기 힘들다는 강도(强度)의 측면에서 사랑을 표상했다. 『안의 성』에서 사랑은 이해타산적 혼사와 대조되는 한편, 성숙할 수 없는 일시적 미혹으로 판명되는 봉자의 감정과도 차별화됨으로써 구분된다. 이를 통해 사랑은 사회적 관계와 구분되는 순수한 감정, 스스로 통제할 수 없는 강렬한 감정, 시간의 경과에 따라 성숙하는 감정을 구심에 두고 표상된다. 이러한 사랑의 표상은 그 주체를 감정의 주체로 표현하고 사랑이 위치한 사적 영역을 감정의 영역으로 규정하는 효과를 낸다.
사랑의 순수성이 사회적 관계를 대조점으로 하여 구체화되는 표상 방식은 이 시기 ‘사회’가 경쟁, 직업, 위계화의 장으로 축소되어 표상되는 국면과 결부되어 있다. 가정은 사회로부터 물러나 머무는 사적 영역으로 표상되며, 이러한 맥락에서 감정을 구심에 둔 사랑은 이해타산적인 사회적 관계들과 차별화되면서 사적인 것으로 구분된다. 그런데 최찬식의 소설들에서 사랑과 가정은 사회의 범죄에 노출된 연약한 것으로 그려지며, 이를 보호하기 위해 국가권력이 일상에 촘촘히 개입하는 양상이 나타난다. 사회를 범죄의 장으로 그리는 방식 역시 식민지화 이후 ‘사회’ 표상의 축소 국면과 연관되어 있다. 사랑과 가정을 둘러싼 문제가 윤리상 선악뿐만 아니라 범죄로 형상화됨으로써 범죄 수사의 주체인 국가권력의 촘촘한 개입이 정당화된다. 이처럼 사랑과 가정이 국가의 보호를 요청하는 약한 것으로 묘사되는 방식은 식민지 통치 이데올로기를 승인한다는 한계를 가진다.

영어초록

Representation of love and the relationship of loving ones can be shaped differently under the different social and historical contexts. Romance fictions in Chosun tend to represent love as a instant attraction combined with sexual desire. In this case, the relationship of loving ones tends to be presented in the manner of accidental encounter-seperation-reunion plot. In 1900's, previous representation of love, instant attraction with sexual desire, is replaced by the feeling of solidarity with the public volition. And the relationship of loving ones is depicted as a developmental one, advancing toward marriage from the encounter through the modern education. In 1910's, however, representation of love seems to return to its original concerns focusing on various shades of emotion between two individuals. Representation of love in 1900's is often said to be a 'cold contract', and that in 1920's a 'passion toward tragic end'. In this paper, I tried to analyze the representation of love in 1910's located between them.
Representation of love in 1910's cannot be regarded as a mere cultural reflection of specific discourses. It was interwoven by other representations originated from other texts such as Ssangokru, Janghanmong, Nunmul which were broadly read among the mass. In 1910's, representation of love tends to put emphasis on its emotional intensity. It is sensed as a strong emotion growing through time that cannot be comprehended perfectly even by its own holder. Therefore, the character experiencing love is represented to be divided into two parts, as the rational and the emotional. Chuwolsek shows similar tendency to represent love highlighting its emotional aspect. In this text, love appears to be unstable emotion that can turn into pathological one if one fails to achieve it. The nature of relationship between loving ones is described as a pure one especially compared to the marriage forced by parents, because the latter appears to be guided by others' self-interests except the persons actually marrying. The purity of love can be assured by the fact that it cannot be re-directed and it cannot be broken by a rational calculation. Anouisung presented the inner side of subject experiencing emotional developments. And it visualized the destructive side of love that drives its holder into madness. In this context, love is depicted as an wild emotion that cannot be controlled by its own holder. This text also differentiates love from temporary attraction. In these texts, the main features of love are represented as pure, uncontrollable, intense, maturing. Therefore, loving subject is mainly appeared as a subject of emotion, and the private sphere where loving ones exist builds itself with emotion in its center.
The way these texts defines love as a pure one against impure social relationships seems to be connected to the reduction of 'society' in 1910's. As the society starts to be regarded as a field for competition, where people work for living and are classified by the social ladder, private relationships tends to be differentiated from calculating social ones. However, in Choi Chansik's fictions, these private relationships are described as fragile ones exposed to rampant crimes in society. As obstacles to love are also identified as crimes, frequent interventions of the state in private sphere are justified as a mean to protect it. The way of representing love and the private as wards of the state is approving an ideology of colonial rule.
