정지용 시에 나타난 인상주의 회화의 영향 (An Influence of Impressionist painting in Jeong Ji-yong’s poetry)

초록

이 논문은 정지용 초기시의 감각과 서구 인상주의 회화의 기법과의 연관성을 살펴본다. 정지용 초기시의 감각에 대한 평가는 상반된 입장을 취했는데, 하나는 감각이 형식적 차원에서의 혁신을 가져오는 계기가 되었다는 것이고, 다른 하나는 그것이 현실과 유리된 기교주의에 지나지 않았다는 것이다. 이 글은 이러한 상반된 평가를 지양하며 정지용 초기시의 감각이 인상주의 회화의 기법에서 비롯되었음을 살펴보고 그것이 가지는 의의와 한계를 짚어본다.
정지용 초기시에 집중적으로 나타난 형태주의 지향의 시각적 묘사는 서구 인상주의 회화의 기법에 기반을 둔 것이다. 김윤식은 정지용 초기시의 서구적 풍경 묘사의 기법을 ‘마리 로랑생’의 감각적 회화에서 비롯된 것이라고 보았지만, 초현실주의의 영향 아래 야수파나 입체파의 성향을 지녔던 마리 로랑생의 화풍을 정지용의 초기시와 연결시키기는 무리가 있다. 오히려 움직이는 대상의 연속적인 움직임을 분할된 순간적인 인상에 의거하여 감각적으로 재현하고 빛에 의해 시시각각으로 변하는 자연의 색채에 집중한 인상주의 회화에서 상당한 영향을 받은 것으로 보인다. 시기적으로 정지용의 일본 유학 시기였던 1920년대는 미술과 문학에서 인상파가 주류로 자리 잡은 시기였으며, 그가 최초로 하나의 대상(말, 바다 등)에 대한 다각적인 인상을 연작의 형태로 묘파하려고 했다는 것 등에서 그러한 영향 관계를 충분히 짐작할 수 있다.
이 논문은 정지용이 인상주의 기법에 천착하게 된 원인을 국외자적 시선이라고 보고 그러한 시선을 바탕으로 즉물적인 인상의 재현이 가능했음에 주목한다. 「슬픈 인상화」, 「카·란스」 등에서 대상의 시각적 형태를 언어로 재현하고자 하는 것에서 인상주의 회화의 ‘터치분할’ 또는 ‘색채분할’을 떠올릴 수 있고, 유동하는 대상을 시각적으로 재현하기 위해 형태주의에 골몰한 것, 대상과의 거리를 유지하는 침착한 시선, 흘러가는 대상의 윤곽의 소실을 그대로 인지하는 정직성 등은 대상에 빠져들지도 않으면서 그리고 자신의 주관성을 철저히 배제하지도 않는 인상주의 화풍의 영향에서 비롯된 것이다.
정지용은 초기시에서 대상을 즉물적으로 바라보면서도 대상과 거리를 두고 국외자적인 거리를 유지했다. 그것은 그가 처했던 정치·사회적 상황과 계급적 위치에 기인한 것으로 보인다. 그는 피식민지의 최전방에 서 있는 지식인이면서 일본에서는 근대화의 가장 끄트머리에 있는, 일본인도 아니고 조선인도 아닌 중간적 위치에 있었다. 떠날 수도 없고 머무를 수도 없으며, 동화될 수도 없고 배척할 수도 없는 국외자의 위치가 근대적 문물과 이국적인 도시 풍경을 순간적 인상에 치중하여 묘사하게 만들었던 것으로 보인다.
정지용은 대상의 물리적·사회적 가치를 엿볼 수 있는 ‘상황’보다는 ‘상태’에 대한 즉물적인 체험을 표현하고자 했다. 이러한 태도가 그를 감각에 집중하게 만들었는데, 그것은 1920년대 초기시의 감상적 낭만주의를 극복하는 계기가 되기는 했지만 사실에 대한 충실성이 세계를 축소시켜 현실을 탈각한 하나의 ‘기교’로 귀결되기도 했다. 특히, 대상에 대한 충실성이 극대화된 작품으로 「바다1」, 「바다2」를 들 수 있는데, 여기서 정지용 초기시의 감각은 가장 첨예하게 나타나지만 또한 인상주의적 기법에 대한 회의를 읽어낼 수도 있다. 이는 후기시의 산수화적 경향과 동양화론에 대한 탐구 등으로 이어지는 계기가 되었을 것으로 추정해볼 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper examines the relationship between the sense of Jeong Ji-yong's early poems and the technique of Western impressionist painting. Evaluations of sense of Jeong Ji-yong's early poems took opposite positions, one that the senses served as an opportunity to bring innovation at the formal level, and the other that it was nothing more than a technique that was separated from reality. This paper avoids these conflicting evaluations, examines that the sense of Jeong Ji-yong's early poems originated from the technique of impressionist painting, and points out the significance and limitations of it.
The visual description that appeared intensively in Jeong Ji-yong's early poems aimed for formalism, that was based on Western impressionist painting techniques. Kim Yoon-sik saw the technique of describing the Western landscape in Jeong Ji-yong's early poems as a result of the sensuous painting of “Marie Laurent-saeng,” but it is too much to connect the painting style of Marie Laurencin who had a tendency to be a beast or cubist, with Jeong Ji-yong's early poem. Rather, it seems to have been significantly influenced by impressionist painting that sensibly represents the continuous movement of moving objects based on a divided momentary impression and focuses on the colors of nature that change from moment to moment by light. In the 1920s, when Jeong Ji-yong was studying in Japan, impressionists became the mainstream in art and literature, and such influences can be fully guessed from the fact that he first tried to portray various impressions of one object (horse, sea, etc.) in a series.
This paper sees the cause of Jung Ji-yong's scrutiny with impressionist techniques as an eyes of outsiders and notes that it was possible to represent an immediate impression based on such perspective. From trying to represent the visual form of an object in language in “The Sad Impressionist Painting(슬픈 인상화),” “The Café France(카·란스),” one's calm gaze to maintain distance from the object, and to perceive honestly and intactly the loss of outlines in flowing objects, one can recall the “touch division” or “color division” of impressionist paintings.
In early poems, Jeong Ji-yong maintained a foreign distance from the object while looking at the object instantaneously. It seems to be due to the political and social situation and class position he faced. He was an intellectual or an educated person at the forefront of the colony and at the tail end of modernized Japan; he was an middle position, not Japanese or Korean. The position of foreigners who cannot whether leave or stay, whether assimilate or reject seems to have focused on momentary impressions of modern cultures and exotic urban landscapes.
Jeong Ji-yong tried to express an immediate experience of the “state” rather than the “situation” that gives a glimpse into the physical and social value of the object. This attitude made him focus on his senses, which served as an opportunity to overcome the sentimental romanticism of early 1920s, but it also resulted in a “technic” that reduced the world by an fidelity to reality. In particular, the works with maximized fidelity to the object include “Sea 1(바다 1)” and “Sea 2(바다 2),” where the sense of Jeong Ji-yong's early poems appears most acutely, but it seemed that he felt skeptical about impressionist techniques. It can be presumed that this would lead to a trend of oriental landscape painting in latter poem and the exploration of oriental painting theory.
