시와 음악 사이 ― 근대동요의 경계적 성격 (Between Poetry and Music - the Liminality of the Modern Children’s Songs)

초록

근대동요는 시와 음악 사이에 있는 경계적 장르로 등장하였다. 동요의 경계적 성격은 시와 음악에 모두 속하면서 동시에 어디에도 온전히 속하지 않는다는 성질을 가리킨다. 이러한 경계적 성격으로 인해서 동요는 문학사를 지배하는 거대 서사를 배반하게 된다. 예컨대, 노래에 의존하는 중세적 시가의 전통을 극복하고 자유시로 이행하고자 하는 근대시의 논리를 위반한다. 그에 따라서 노래와 시를 결합하려는 창가의 시도를 계승한다. 창가를 중세적 전통의 마지막 주자로 평가하는 근대시문학사의 논리가 관철되지 않는 것이다. 시와 음악의 미분리는 전근대적 유산이 아니라 새로운 가능성이 열리는 지점인 것이다. 창가의 정형시 리듬조차도 인쇄문자의 한계를 극복하는 계기로 재해석된다. 그것은 인쇄문자의 침묵하는 기표를 거부하고 입말의 발성적 기표를 활성화하기 때문이다. 이는 구술문화에 대한 재평가로 이어진다. 인쇄문자의 발달로 인해서 소리에 의존하는 구술문화는 열등한 것으로 평가되었다. 하지만 음반과 유성기, 라디오 등의 소리 기록장치의 보급으로 소리에 의존하는 구술문화의 유산들이 활발하게 유통되었다. 이로 인해서 소리와 기억을 결합하는 정형시의 리듬이 다시 주목받게 되었다. 그러한 변화의 한 가운데에 동요가 있는 것이다. 이로 인해서 근대시문학사의 선형적 논리가 거부된다. 시와 노래의 미분리에서 시와 노래의 분리로, 정형시에서 자유시로, 구술문화에서 문자문화로, 발성 가능한 입말에서 침묵하는 기표로 발전한다는 선형적 발전의 논리가 뒤집어지는 것이다. 이는 근대문학이 그 성립을 위해서 억압했던 사실의 노출이다. 근대동요의 경계적 성격이 반(半)문학에 속하는 이유가 여기에 있다.

영어초록

Modern children's songs have emerged as a boundary genre between poetry and music, and the boundary character of children's songs indicates that they belong to both poetry and music and do not belong to any place at the same time. Due to this borderline nature, children's songs betray the master narrative that dominates the history of literature, for example, it violates the logic of modern poetry to overcome the tradition of medieval poetry relying on songs and to move to free verse. Therefore, it succeeds Changga's attempt to combine song and poetry, which does not carry out the logic of modern poetry history that evaluates Changga as the last runner of medieval tradition. The separation of poetry and music is not a pre-modern legacy, but a point where new possibilities are opened. Even the rhythm of the formal poetry of the Changga is reinterpreted as an opportunity to overcome the limitations of printed characters. This is because it rejects the silent signifiers of printed characters and activates the vocalizing signifiers of the oral language, which leads to a reevaluation of the oral culture. However, with the spread of sound recording devices such as records, voice recorders, and radios, the legacy of oral culture relying on sound has been actively circulated, and the rhythm of formal poetry that combines sound and memory has been attracting attention again. In the midst of such a change, there is a fluctuation, which rejects the linear logic of modern poetry history. The logic of linear development that develops from the separation of poetry and song to the separation of poetry and song, from formal poetry to free poetry, from oral culture to literal culture, from utterable words to silent signifiers is reversed. This is the exposure of the fact that modern literature suppressed for its establishment. This is why the boundary character of modern children's songs belongs to semi-literature.
