기형도 시에 나타난 시대적 징후 (Signs of the Times in Ki Hyeong-do’s Poetry)

초록

이 논문은 기형도 시의 문학사적 위상을 재평가하고 재구성한다. 기존의 연구에서 기형도는 자주 90년대적 시인으로 해석되고 평가되었다. 이러한 해석의 과정은 기형도 시에 내재하는 역사성을 독특한 방식으로 굴절시킨다. 다시 말해, 그의 시가 80년대 중반 이후 노동의 현장에서 발생한 노동자의 분화양상을 특정한 형식으로 형상화 하는 데 성공했다는 사실을 배제하며 동시에 노동시의 역사적 맥락 안에서 그의 시가 새롭게 조명될 수 있는 가능성을 박탈한다. 또한 기형도의 시에 80년대 광주의 기억을 애도하며 그것을 종결된 정치적 사건으로 취급하지 않으려는 인식과 의지가 내재해 있다는 사실 또한 외면한다.
기형도의 시가 80년대 해체시와 차별화하여 도시적 공간을 시적 영역으로 자리매김한 것은 물론이거니와 그 공간 속에서 혼돈과 절망의 감각을 산출한 것만이 아니라 나름의 서사화된 삶을 꿈꾸는 작업을 수행했다는 점 역시 새롭게 평가하고 해석할 지점이다. 기형도의 시에는 더 큰 질서로 이행하려는 의식의 지향 역시 발견되며, 이러한 면모는 그간의 연구들이 기형도의 시를 전형적으로 분석하는 틀을 해체할 만한 내용을 함축한다.
기형도의 시가 80년대에서 90년대로의 시사(詩史)의 변화 과정에서 수행했던 역할은 그 시대 사이의 단절의 징후를 드러냈다고 볼 수 없다. 그의 시세계가 두 시대 사이에서 어떤 지속성과 통합을 의도하고 또 의식하고 있었는지는 확인가능하며, 이러한 작업은 기형도의 시를 매개로 한국 시의 역사성을 새롭게 조망할 지점을 확보하게 될 것이다.

영어초록

This study’s purpose is to re-assess and re-construct the graceful poetry in the literary position of Ki Hyeong-do’s poetry in previous studies on verse. Ki Hyeong- do was frequently construed and assessed as a poet throughout the 1990s. The main spirit expressed in his poetry was pointed out as having nihilistic color and hopeless sensitiveness, which was a result of his separation from the literacy of the 1980s that put emphasis on ideology and social cause. The process of such an interpretation refracts the characteristics of history embedded in his poetry in a unique way. In other words, such interpretation excludes the fact that his poetry was successful in imaging the division of a picture of laborers toiling in their work sites in the latter years of 1980s and at the same time deprives the possibility that his poetry can be viewed in a new light in the historic characteristics of labor poetry. In addition, such interpretation ostracizes a fact that the recognition and will inherent in his poetry grieves on the memory of Gwangju Democratization Movement in the 1980s and treats the memory as a resultant political event but does not nullify it.
Ki Hyeong-do’s poetry not only separates itself from other examples of de-construction poetry in the 1980s and sets urban spaces as poetic realms but also expresses feelings of confusion and hopelessness in its spaces. Moreover, his poetry expressed his dreams of a narrative life thereby. This point should also be assessed and construed in a more systematic way. In fact, it is not difficult to find various features of internal conflict in the hopelessness and futility frequented in the world of his poetry. More than that, it is found that his intent was to advance to a larger order by means of understanding such conflicts. This understanding implies a possibility that the frame of conventional analysis of Ki Hyeong-do’s poetry should be broken.
It should not be a fact that the role of Kim Hyeong-do’s poetry in the changing course of poetic history from 1980s to 1990s revealed a symptom of separation of the times. We can secure a point to put the historic character of Korean poetry in a new light by means of the poetry of Ki Hyeong-do through interpreting the fact that his poetic world intended to be seen and recognized as a certain form of continuity and unity through his poetry.
