김현승 시와 ‘요나(Jonah) 원형’ (Kim Hyun－seung’s Poetry and ‘Jonah Archetype’)

초록

이 논문에서 필자는 김현승의 시작품을 『구약성서』의 「요나서」와 비교함으로써 그의 시에 나타난 상상력의 구조와 지향의식을 살펴보고자 했다.
신에 대한 경외와 그에 반하는 회피, 그리고 참회와 귀의로 이뤄지는 「요나서」 제1, 2장의 구조는 김현승 시의 변모 양상과 일치한다. ‘요나 원형’은김현승 시 전체를 지배하는 상상력으로서, 시세계의 처음과 끝을 일관하는 하나의 서사로 존재한다.
제Ⅱ장 ‘기도하는 시인’에서는 제1기 시를 대상으로 김현승의 기도시를살펴봤다. 김현승 시인은 하나님을 경외하던 요나처럼 자신의 정체성을 기독교 신앙에서 찾았다. 이러한 기독교적 시의식은 신앙의 세계를 시로수용하는 기도시의 형태로 나타난다. 그는 기도시를 통해 신앙인으로서의겸허한 삶의 태도를 소망한다. 이렇게 시로써 기도하는 김현승 시의 특징은 자기고백적이며, 대부분의 경우 시인과 시적 화자가 일치하는 것으로드러난다.
제Ⅲ장 신을 잃은 고독’에서는 제2기 시를 대상으로 신을 부정하고 고독에 천착한 김현승의 시작품을 분석했다. 이 시기는 요나가 신의 뜻을 거역하고 도망친 부분에 해당한다.
김현승이 고독에 몰두하기 시작한 이유는 자신의 참된 본질을 알기 위해서였다. 그는 성찰의 공간으로서 어둠을 선택한다. 요나가 배의 밑층이라는 어둡고 내밀한 공간에 은신했듯이, 시인은 자신을 감싸주는 어둠 속으로 침잠한다. 필자는 여기서 바슐라르가 말한 요나 콤플렉스를 도출했다. 문화적 콤플렉스로서의 요나 콤플렉스는 죽음의 모성이라는 주제와그리스도의 부활이라는 이미지를 내포하는데, 제2기 시에서는 주로 어둠을 동반한 모성으로의 지향성이 드러난다.
제Ⅳ장 ‘참회와 부활’에서는 제3기 시를 대상으로 요나 콤플렉스의 핵심인 부활을 지향하는 상상력에 주목했다. 큰 물고기에 삼켜진 요나가 사흘밤낮을 그 뱃속에 있다 부활했듯이, 시인은 죽음 체험을 계기로 절대신앙에 귀의한다. 김현승 시의 주제가 고독에서 신앙으로 다시 한 번 변모하게된 것이다. 이로써 제2기 시에서 그가 천착했던 고독은 절대신앙에 회귀하기 위한 시적 여정으로 정리된다.
요나가 물고기의 뱃속에서 참회시를 썼던 것처럼, 김현승은 참회로서의시쓰기를 실천한다. 필자는 시 「이 어둠이 내게 와서」의 개작 전·후를 비교함으로써 시쓰기를 통한 참회의 양상을 살펴봤다. 부활한 요나가 신의뜻에 따라 사역에 전념했듯이, 김현승도 하나님을 찬양하는 시를 씀으로써 신앙 속에 거듭나고자 했던 것이다.
신앙에서 고독으로 변모하고, 다시 절대신앙에 귀의하는 김현승의 시세계는 요나의 행적과 일치한다. 이렇게 모성으로의 회귀와 부활을 지향하는 요나 콤플렉스는 김현승 시세계를 일관하는 상상력의 원형으로서, 김현승 전체 시의 상상력의 구조를 가늠하고 시적 변모 양상을 해석하는데유효하게 적용될 수 있다.

영어초록

This study examined the organization of Kim Hyun-seung's imagination and his orientation in his poems by comparing to the Book of Jonah in the Old Testament of the Bible.
The Chapters 1 and 2 of the Book of Jonah, which consist of fear of God, avoidance from the fear as a reaction, and repentance and devotion,correspond with the changes found in Kim Hyun-seung's poems in terms of their organization. The Jonah archetype lies in his poems as the imagination that dominate the entire poems and as a narrative that runs consistent from beginning to end.
Chapter 2, "Praying Poet," looked at Kim Hyun-seung's prayer poems put of his first period poems. Like Jonah who feared God, Kim Hyun-seung also positioned his identity within Christianity. This poetic sense of Christianity were made into prayer poems into which the spiritual world of faith was integrated. He wished to have a modest attitude toward life as a Christian as a church-goer. The characteristics of Kim Hyun-seung who prays through poems are self-confessional, and in most cases, the poet corresponds with the persona.
Chapter 3, "The Solitude Without God," analyzed Kim Hyun-seung's poems in which he denies God and sticks himself with solitude in the second period of his poems. This period can be explained as the part where Jonah disobeys God and runs away.
The reason Kim Hyun-seung is absorbed in solitude is to find out the truth in himself (Self). He chooses the darkness as a space for his self-reflection. Just as Jonah hides himself in the dark and secret space under the deck of a ship, the poet submerges into the darkness surrounding him. At this point, the Jonah's Complex Bachelard mentioned becomes significant. The Jonah Complex as a cultural complex includes the theme of the motherhood of death and the image of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
In the poems in the second period, it is directed as the motherhood accompanied by the darkness.
Chapter 4, "Repentance and Resurrection," focused on the imagination that aims at resurrection, which is the essence of the Jonah Complex in his third period poems. Just as Jonah resurrects from the stomach of a big fish by which he has been swallowed, the poet turns to faith in God after his near-death experience. At this point, solitude he had devoted himself to was directed to his poetic journey to return to his Faith in God.
Just as Jonah write a poem of repentance in a big fish's stomach, Kim Hyun-seung puts repentance into action through poem writing. This study examines aspects of his repentance through poem writing by comparing two versions of the poem, "This Darkness Comes to Me" － one written before his repentance and the other after. After all, it can be said that just as Jonah devotes himself to the service for God after he has been saved, Kim Hyun-seung tries to be resurrected in his faith by writing poems that praise God.
Kim Hyun-seung's world of poetry in which faith turned into solitude and again into faith in God corresponds with Jonah's movements. The Jonah Complex that seeks for return to Mother and resurrection can be effectively applied to Kim Hyun-seung's poems as the archtype of imagination that runs through his world of poetry in order to understand the organization of imagination throughout Kim Hyun-seung's poems and interpret changes in his poems.
