13세기 高麗 지식인의 몽골 인식 비교 -李奎報·金坵와 李承休를 중심으로- (Comparison of the Perceptions of Mongol by the Intellectuals of Goryeo in the 13th Century - Focused on Lee Kyu-bo, Kim Gu, and Lee Seung-hyu -)

초록

고려 중·후기는 북방민족의 중원 지배로 동아시아의 국제질서가 격변하는 시기이다. 기존의 中原을 차지한 漢族 왕조를 華로 규정하던 전통적 관념은 힘의 논리가 지배하는 국제질서로 대체되었다. 이러한 변화는 유교를 선진으로 인식하고 至高의 문화로 숭배하던 고려의 儒者들에게 큰 충격을 주었다. 특히 중원뿐만 아니라 유라시아 대륙을 지배한 세계 최강의 제국인 몽골(元)을 상대해야 하는, 고려 지식인들의 고뇌와 성찰은 예전과는 전혀 다른 대외 인식과 역사 인식을 표출시키게 되었다.
몽골에 항전하던 13세기 전반기 대표적인 고려의 지식인 이규보와 김구는 華夷論에 기초해 몽골을 夷로 규정하고, 대몽 항쟁을 결의하였지만, 국제정세나 현실과는 동떨어진 자신들의 입지와 이해에 기반하는 한계를 지니고 있었다. 반면, 이승휴는 원을 중화로 상정하여 한족이든 북방민족이든 중원을 차지한 인물이 중국의 황제라는 지극히 고려 중심의 현실적 대외 인식을 대변하고 있다. 이러한 고려 지식인의 몽골 인식은 이승휴를 기점으로, 李齊賢은 원을 섬기고 나서 中外의 걱정이 없어지고 백성이 날로 풍요로워졌고, 李穡도 원이 천하를 차지하여 사해가 통일되자 중화와 변경의 차이가 없어졌다고 표현할 정도로 변화하였다. 이승휴가 기존 몽골 인식에 대한 답습이 아니라 고려의 국익을 최우선으로 하는 실리적인 자구책을 찾고 새로운 대외 인식을 정립했다는 점에서 그 의미에 대한 재평가가 필요하다.

영어초록

The middle and the latter parts of Goryeo are the period in which the international order of East Asia was rapidly changed by a northern race’s rule over the central districts. The traditional idea that had defined the Han dynasty that occupied the existing central districts as the Flowery Kingdom was replaced by the international order ruled by the power of logic. This change had a big impact on the Confucianists of Goryeo, who recognized Confucianism as an advancement and worshiped it as a supreme culture. Anguish and reflection in Goryeo intellectuals, who had to deal with Mongol (Yuan), the world's most powerful empire at the time, which ruled over the Eurasian Continent as well as the central districts, came to express ideas about the outside world and perceptions of history that were different from before.
In the first half of the 13th century when Goryeo resisted against Mongolia, representative intellectuals of Goryeo, Lee Kyu-bo and Kim Gu resolved the anti-Mongol struggle, defining Mongolians as barbarians based on Hwai-ron (Theory on the Civilized and Barbarians); however, they had a limitation based on their position and understanding, far from international situations or reality. On the other hand, Lee Seung-hyu assumed Yuan Dynasty as the Flowery Kingdom, representing the extremely realistic perception of the outside centered around Goryeo that the person who occupied the central districts, either Han race or a northern race would be the Emperor of China. Starting with Lee Seung-hyu, the perceptions of Mongol in intellectuals of Goryeo were changed to the extent that Lee Jae-hyeon said that concerns were gone from the inside and the outside, and the people became richer day by day after serving Yuan Dynasty and that Lee Saek, too, expressed that the difference between the central districts and frontiers disappeared since the four seas were united as Yuan Dynasty occupied the whole country. In that Lee Seung-hyu looked for practical self-rescue measures prioritizing Goryeo’s national interests, instead of following the existing perception of Mongol and established new ideas on the external world, the significance should be reevaluated.
