고성 옥천사 대웅전 석조불상 연구 －조성시기와 조각승을 중심으로－ (A study on Stone Buddha of Okcheonsa Temple at Goseong fucus on the Production date and Monk sculptor)

초록

본 논문은 옥천사 대웅전에 봉안된 석조아미타삼존불좌상의 제작연대와 조각승을 구체적으로 밝힐 것이다. 석조아미타여래좌상은 복장 조사가 이루어지지 않아 구체적인 조성 시기와 작가 등을 밝힐 수 없지만. 임란 이후 옥천사 전각의 건립과 불상의 양식적 특징을 중심으로 17세기 중･후반에 제작된 기년명 불상을 중심으로 비교하였다.
이와 같은 비교 연구를 통하여 석조삼존불좌상은 법당이 건립된 1654년경에 조성되었는데. 건물 초창 때 극락전으로 건립되어 1745년에 대웅전으로 이름이 바뀌었다. 이 석조불상은 이목구비에서 풍기는 인상이나 착의법 등이 1670년에 경옥이 만든 석조지장보살좌상과 유사하다.
조각승 경옥은 1648년에 수화승 승일과 전남 강진 정수사 목조삼세불좌상을, 수화승 희장과 1649년에 경북 구미 수다사 목조아미타삼존불좌상과 1650년에 전북 진안 금당사 목조아미타삼존불좌상을 조성했다. 또한 수화승 도우와 1653년에 대구 달성 운흥사 목조삼존불좌상과 1655년에 달성 용연사 석조아미타삼존불좌상 및 1655년에 경북 칠곡 송림사 불상을 조성할 때 조각승 가운데 3~4번째로 언급될 정도로 중추적인 역할을 하여 최소한 40대 전후의 나이였을 것으로 보인다. 따라서 1670년에 경옥이 주도해서 만든 옥천사 명부전 불상은 60대 정도에 만든 것으로 추정된다.
조각승 경옥이 제작한 불상은 눈두덩이에서 코로 이어지는 선이 거의 직각을 이루고, 원통형의 코, 인중이 넓은 것이 특징이다. 또한 오른쪽 어깨에 걸친 대의 끝자락은 V자형을 이루고, 옷주름은 전체적으로 평면적인 느낌이 든다. 이와 같은 양식적인 특징을 가진 영남의 무기년명(無紀年銘) 불상은 통영 용화사 석조삼존불좌상, 남해 용문사 석조석가삼존불좌상, 의령 수도사 석조아미타삼존불좌상 등으로 1680년경에 경옥이나 그 계보 조각승이 만든 것으로 추정된다.

영어초록

This paper is a study on the Production date and Monk sculptor about the Stone seated Amitabha triad enshrined in Daewoongjeon Hall of Okcheonsa Temple at Goseong. As the Sacred Objects Stored in Stone seated Amitabha triad has not been investigated, so it cannot reveal the specific timing of its creation and the author. However, after the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, the construction of Okcheonsa temple's pavilions and the stylistic characteristics of the Buddha statues were compared with those of the mid-late 17th century Buddhas. In a comparative study like this, I found that the Stone triad Buddha statue was made around 1654 when the Buddha Hall was built and it was built in the early days of the Guekrakjeon and was renamed Daewoongjeon in 1745. This Stone Buddha statue is similar to the Stone Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva made by a monk sculptor Gyeongok(敬玉) in 1670, which was created in 1670. A monk sculptor Gyeongok made the Wooden seated triad of JeonNam Gangjin Jeongsoosa temple with leading monk sculptor Suengil in 1648, the Wooden seated Buddha triad of GyeongBuk Gumi Sudasa temple in 1649 and the Wooden seated Amitabha triad of JeonBuk Jinan Guemdangsa temple in 1650 with leading sculptor Huijang. Also he produced the Wooden seated Buddha triad of Deagu Dalseong Woonheungsa temple in 1653 with eading sculptor Dowoo and the Stone seated Amitabha triad in 1655. When he created the Buddha statue at Songrimsa Temple in Chilgok, North Gyeongsang Province, in 1655, he played a pivotal role, becoming the third to fourth of the sculptors to be mentioned, and is believed to be at least in his 40s. Therefore, it is estimated that the Buddha statue of Okcheonsa Temple, which was built by Gyeongok in 1670, was made in his 60s.
The Buddha statue he produced features a nearly perpendicular line from the eye to the nose, a cylindrical nose and a large philtrum. Also, the tip of the robes over the right shoulder forms a V shape, and the fold of the garment feels flat overall. The statues unknown production date of Yeongnam, which have such stylistic features, include the Stone seated Buddha triad of Yonghwasa Temple in Tongyeong, the Stone seated Sakhamuni triad of Yongmunsa Temple in Namhae, the stone statue of Buddha in Yongmunsa Temple in Namhae, the stone statue of Stone seated Amitabha triad of of Uiryeong Monksa Temple. These are believed to have been made by Gyeong-ok or his pedigree Sculptor around 1680
