초록

석북 신광수의 <검승전>에는 일반적인 전의 서술과는 다른 몇 가지 특징들이 드러난다. 이 글에서는 이와 같은 이질적 특징들을 종합적으로 이해할 수 있는 방안을 모색하고, 그것이 갖는 문화사적 함의를 민족 개념의 형성과 관련지어 검토하였다. 2장에서는 이 작품에 나타나는 인물의 익명성과 위계적 관계의 문제를 분석했다. <검승전>의 인물들은 모두 익명인데, 이는 그들이 드러내는 어떤 특징과 정체성을 소속 집단, 특히 내셔널한 경계의 문제로 과대 대표화하여 이해하도록 만든다. 이를 통해 익명의 스승과 제자 사이에서 일어났던 일은 조선과 일본, 그리고 문명과 야만의 상하 관계로 확장하여 파악될 수 있음을 언급했다. 3장에서는 두 명의 항왜 제자가 하나는 아들 하나는 적이라는 야만의 두 얼굴로 형상화되고 있음을 밝혔다. 특히 ‘우리 세 사람’으로 지칭되었던 익명의 스승과 제자가 조선과 일본의 관계를 형상화한다면, ‘우리 두 사람’으로 언급되었던 익명의 두 왜인 제자는 사랑 받는 야만인과 미움 받는 야만인으로 구별되어 형상화되고 있음을 분석했다. 4장에서는 <검승전>이 임진왜란의 상처가 많이 아문 상황에서 창작된 작품임을 전제로, 제자에게 암습을 받아 죽는 스승의 이야기가 이 시기에 왜 만들어졌으며 독자에게 어떤 쾌락을 안겨줄 수 있었는가를 논의했다. <검승전>은 환상을 통해 현실을 극복하는 이야기가 아니라, 전란의 발생과 패배가 모두 우리의 뛰어남 때문이라는 답을 제시하는 작품이었다. 이 과정에서 ‘우리 안의 타자’인 항왜를 배제함으로써 ‘진정한 우리’가 만들어지는 징후를 포착할 수 있다. 즉 이 작품은 우리와 비슷해 보이지만 우리가 아닌 자를 우리로부터 배제함으로써 구성되는 진정한 우리의 문제를 제기하고 있다. 이 글에서는 이를 구성적 외부라는 개념으로 설명했다.

영어초록

In this article, I sought a way to comprehensively understand the heterogeneous characteristics revealed by Shin Kwang-soo’s “Geomseungjeon”, and reviewed its cultural and historical implications in relation to the composition of the nation. I would like to summarize the contents discussed and conclude by referring to the remaining tasks.
In Chapter 2, the problem of anonymity and hierarchical relationships of characters in this work was analyzed. All the characters in “Geomseungjeon” are anonymous, which makes them understand certain characteristics and identities they reveal by overrepresenting them as a matter of national boundaries, especially in their groups. It was mentioned that what happened between anonymous teacher and disciples can be grasped by expanding into civilization and barbarism, and the hierarchical relationship between Joseon and Japan.
In Chapter 3, I mentioned that when the relationship between the teacher and the disciples is approached as a matter of civilization and barbarism, two disciples embody two faces of barbarism, one is son and the other is enemy. In particular, it was analyzed that the anonymous teacher and disciples, who were referred to as “We Three,” embody the relationship between Joseon and Japan, the two anonymous Japanese disciples, who were referred to as “We Two,” were distinguished as a loved barbarian and a hated barbarian.
In Chapter 4, I discussed why the story of a teacher who died after being raided by a disciple was created during this period and what kind of pleasure could be brought to the reader, assuming that “Geomseungjeon” was a work created in a situation where the wounds of the Imjin War healed a lot. “Geomseungjeon” was not a story of overcoming reality through fantasy, but a work that suggested that both the occurrence and defeat of the war were due to our excellence. However, in this process, I argued that “the true us” was formed by excluding Hangwae, “the other in us”, from us.
In other words, the problems raised by this work are as follows. The true us, which looks similar to us but is composed of excluding those who are not us from us. In this article, I tried to explain this with the concept of constitutive outside.
The contents discussed in this article need to be expanded through the process of comparing based on data that can confirm the view of Japan during this period, including the Tongsinsa(通信使) that took place in the 18th century. This will be supplemented through subsequent studies.
