공연예술산업 스타트업의 성공 요인에 관한 탐색적 연구 - 브러쉬씨어터 사례를 중심으로 - (An Exploratory Study on the Success Factors of Art Startup in the Performing Arts Industry: Focusing on the case of BRUSH Theatre)

초록

대다수가 정부 지원금에 의존하는 기초예술 분야에서는 사업체로 활동하면서도 성공적인 스타트업으로 성장하는 사례를 다른 영역의 일로 여겨왔다. 이에 본 연구는 공연예술산업에서의 스타트업 성공 요인을 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위해 공연예술단체의 정체성을 유지하면서 스타트업으로 성장하고 있는 ‘브러쉬씨어터’를 사례로 선정하고, 현상학적 연구방법을 채택하여 관련된 내외부 전문가를 대상으로 심층 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 분석을 위한 연구틀로는 벤처기업의 성과분석모델인 ERIS 모델에 예술스타트업의 성공 요인을 추가하여 모형을 설정하였다.
연구 결과, 일반적 스타트업의 성공 요인으로는 혁신적 기업가의 사업적 판단과 결단력, 안정된 공연시스템과 조직문화, 가치소비와 시장 확대에 대응하는 예술스타트업 등장, 그리고 브랜드 전략과 자체적인 공연 제작시스템 구축 등으로 나타났다. 또한 예술적 성공 요인은 기업가의 예술적 기반과 예술적 성취가 핵심적이며, 사업성 있는 공연작품(IP)의 지속적 확보, 확장성과 지속성을 위한 세계관과 팬덤 형성, 기술융합 등 제작역량 강화와 내재화, 공연사업모델의 다양화 전략 구사 등으로 나타났다.
본 연구는 전통적인 공연예술 사업모델을 기반으로 성장한 예술스타트업 사례에서 성공전략을 도출하는 한편, 산업적 발전과정에 대한 연구와 예술스타트업 성장을 위한 정책적 필요성을 재확인하였다.

영어초록

In the field of the fundamental arts, where the majority depend on government subsidies, the case of growing into successful startups while working as a businesses, that is, an art companies, have been regarded as a work in other areas. However, for the development of the arts sector, it is necessary to present the successful casesof art companies as a way forward for arts organizations in the fundamental arts field. The purpose of this study is to explore the possibilities and success factors of startups in the performing arts industry. To this end, “BRUSH Theatre,” which is growing into a startup with the identity of a performing arts organization, was selected as an example, and in-depth interviews were conducted with related internal and external experts, and phenomenological research methods were adopted as a research method. In addition, it was analyzed by applying the ERIS model, a performance analysis model of venture companies, and a research model that added the success factors of art startups.
As a result, the success factors of general startups include the business judgment and determination of innovative entrepreneurs, the stable performance system and the organizational culture, the art startup that responds to the value consumption and market expansion, and the brand strategy and its own performance production system. In addition, artistic success factors are the core of the artistic foundation and artistic achievement of entrepreneurs, and the continuous securing of business performance works (IP), forming a worldview and fandom for sustainability and scalability, strengthening and internalizing production capabilities such as technology convergence, and using various strategies.
This study presented a successful strategy in the case of art startups grown in performing arts organizations in the traditional value chain, while reaffirming the need for research on industrial development and policy for the growth of art startups.
