한국 프로야구에서의 원정팀, 요일에 따른 홈팀의 관중 수 예측 (Prediction of the number of attendances in the home team according to the visiting team and the day in Korean Baseball League)

초록

본 연구는 중도절단 회귀모형을 적용하여 요일, 원정팀의 설명변수들을 통해 프로야구의 각 홈팀별 관중 수를 예측하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 통해 요일에 따른 관중 수의 차이뿐만이 아니라 원정팀에 따라서 관중 수가 얼마나 변화하는지를 정량적으로 제시하였다. 이를 위하여 2016년 한국 프로야구의 경기별 관중 수 기록을 활용하였으며 모든 분석은 통계 소프트웨어 프로그램인 R을 사용하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 요일에 따라 관중 수에 차이가 있었다. 주말에는 평일에 비해 관중 수가 24.71% 더 증가했으며 주말에서도 특히 토요일이 일요일보다 관중이 더 많이 입장했다. 토요일에는 일요일보다 17.50% 더 많은 관중들이 입장하고 있는데 이는 일요일과 다른 평일들과의 차이들(16.00%)과 비슷했다. 둘째, 홈팀에 따라 평균 관중 수에 차이가 있었다. 구장별 최대수용인원이 다르기 때문에 최대수용인원 대비 관중수인 좌석점유율로 설명하자면 서울을 연고지로 사용하는 LG, 넥센, 두산과 수용인원이 작은 구장을 사용하는 한화, NC는 기본적으로 좌석점유율이 높았다. 셋째, 홈팀이 어떤 원정팀과 경기를 하냐에 따라 좌석점유율에 차이가 있었다. 좌석점유율 증가에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 원정팀들은 전통적으로 인기 구단으로 알려진 KIA와 김성근 감독 부임 이후 인기를 얻고 있는 한화였다. 또한 2008년에 창단한 넥센, 2011년에 창단한 NC, 2013년에 창단한 KT 등 신생팀들은 아직 원정에서의 인기가 높지 않았다. 이처럼 중도절단 회귀모형의 회귀계수를 통해 여러 내용을 확인할 수 있었으며 각 구장 별로 요일과 원정팀에 따른 좌석점유율을 예측할 수 있었다. 따라서 본 연구 결과는 구장의 입장료 설정, 구단 상품 및 매점의 수요예측, 또한 한국프로야구위원회의 시즌 일정 제작에 활용될 수 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of the research is to figure out the number of attendances for each home team of Korean Baseball League by using a censored regression model and explanatory variables of the day and the away team. We quantitatively suggested not only the difference in the number of attendances according to the day but also the number of attendances according to the visiting team through a censored regression model. We used the day-by-day records in the whole 2016 Korean professional games and all analysis were performed by the statistical software R. We summarize the research result as follows. Firstly, there were differences in the number of attendances depending on the day of the week. On weekends, the number of attendances has increased by 24.71% over weekdays, and there were more attendances on Saturdays than on Sundays on weekends. On Saturday, 17.50% more crowds attended than on Sunday, which was similar to the difference between Sunday and other weekdays(16.00%). Secondly, the average number of attendances was different according to the home team. The occupancy rate of seat was introduced as the measure of the attendances since the maximum capacities of the stadiums were different. LG, Nexen, and Doosan, which were located on Seoul, and Hanwha and NC, which used a small ballpark with a small capacity, basically had a high seat occupancy rate. Thirdly, there was a difference in the seat occupancy rate depending on which team the home team played with. Kia and Hanwha were the best two away teams which influenced on the increase of seat occupancy rate positively. Kia was known as the most popular away team traditionally and Hanwha has been popular recently after Sung Keun Kim was hired as the manager. Nexen, which was founded in 2008, NC in 2011, and KT in 2013, have not been popular on the road yet. We figured out various contents through the regression coefficients of the censored regression model, and we predicted the occupancy of seats according to the day of the week and the visiting team for each field. Therefore, the results of this study can be used to set the admission fee of the stadium, to forecast the demand of the stadium goods and kiosk, and to make the season schedule of the Korean Baseball League.
