김열규의 수필론 연구 (A Study on the Essay Theory of Kim Yeolgyu)

초록

국문학자․한국학자 김열규는 한국 수필의 한 맥을 잇는 수필가이기도 하다. 편협한 장르의식으로 소외당한 수필을 문학의 영역으로 끌어들이며 왕성한 작품 활동과 수필 이론을 개진하였다. 이 글에서는 김열규의 수필론을 수필의 글감, 수필 언어, 수필의 지향점 세 가지 주제로 나누어 살펴보았다.
수필을 소재의 문학이라고 한다. 작가의 삶의 경험을 토대로 이루어지는 수필의 소재는 구체적 생활세계, 실존의 양태인 이 일상에 있다. 김열규는 수필의 소재가 지닌 일상성을 기꺼이 인정하되 그것을 문학적으로 승화시키는 것은 수필가의 몫임을 상기시킨다. 수필의 소재는 사실 그대로의 날것이 아니라 그 너머의 가치와 의미를 캐물으며 작가의 해석과 의미부여라는 문학적 변용을 거쳐야 한다는 것이다.
이러한 소재를 심미적 관점에서 형상화하여 주제를 구현하는 데는 언어라는 통로를 거쳐야 한다. 수필 언어는 작가가 자신의 일상적 체험을 자기만의 언어로 재구성하며 삶과 세계를 의미화한 문학적 소산이다. 김열규가 추구하는 수필 언어는 피상적 생각 나열이나 상투적 일상어가 아닌 체험이 내재화되면서 자기 안에서 부화한 언어다. 오롯이 작가 자신의 감각에서 발현되는 ‘체험의 언어’를 말한다. 그러므로 김열규에게 수필 언어는 곧 체험이다.
김열규가 제시한 수필의 글감과 언어에 대한 이론은 궁극적으로 자기고백의 글쓰기인 수필의 본령을 보다 진정성 있게 이행하는 데 요구되는 작업의 일환이라고 할 수 있다. 그는 이를 위해 자기응시와 자기탐색이라는 ‘수행(修行)’의 뜻을 수필隨筆의 ‘수隨’에 부친다. 결국 그의 수필의 지향점은 일상의 소재가 작가만의 체험의 언어로 부화되어 구심(求心)의 단계로 나아가는 것이다.
김열규 수필론의 저변에는 ‘일상성’이 깔려있다. 일상의 문학, 생활문학이라는 이름으로 일상성은 마치 수필의 문학성을 방해하는 태생적 한계처럼 여겨져 왔다. 그는 수필문학의 딜레마를 부인하는 데서 답을 찾는 것이 아니라 그 난제를 끌어안고 극복해나가는 과정 자체가 수필문학이 거듭나는 길임을 피력하고 있다. 바로 이 점이 김열규 수필론 의 의의라 해도 좋을 것이다.

영어초록

Yeolgyu Kim, a scholar of Korean literature․South Korean scholar, is also an acknowledged essayist who marked a new era in the fields of essays in South Korea. Back at the time, essays were isolated because of prejudiced awareness of genres but Kim included the essays in the realm of literature and engaged in active work activities and expressed the essay theories. This study explored Yeolgyu Kim's essay theory by classifying it into three topics like the subject matter of essay, the essay language, and the aim of the essay.
Essays are known as the literature of subject matter. The subject matter that forms based on the personal life experiences of the writer are present in the detailed world of life and in daily life, which is an aspect of existence. Kim emphasized that the subject matter of the essay is actually not in the raw, as it involves interrogating further values and meaning and must go through literary acculturation like the writer's interpretation and ascription. With this, it is reminded that it is the essayist's share to recognize the dailiness carried by the subject matter of the essay while sublimating it from a literary point of view.
To embody the subject matter of the essay from an aesthetic viewpoint and implement a topic, it must pass through a passage, which is language. Essay language is a product of literature where the writer's daily experiences are restructured with personal language to signify the life and the world. The essay language pursued by Kim is a language that incubates within through the internalization of experiences rather than the listing of superficial thoughts or conventional everyday language. It only stands for the 'language of experiences' that develops from the writer's personal senses. Therefore, essay language signifies experiences to Kim.
Ultimately, the theory about subject matter and language in essay as proposed by Yeolgyu Kim can be understood as a part of the work required to execute the proper functions of essay, a form of self-confessional writing, with greater authenticity. For this, Kim added the meaning of ‘performance (修行)’, which is to constantly practice self-contemplation and self-exploration, onto the Chinese character ‘隨’ of the term essays (隨筆). In the end, the aim of his essays is to incubate daily subject matter into the writer's experiential language and progress into the centripetal (求心) stage.
Yeolgyu Kim's essay theory is based upon the premise of dailiness. Under the literature of everyday life and life literature, dailiness was considered as an inherent limit that disturbs the literary values of essays. Kim sets forth that the answer shouldn't be searched from refusing the dilemma of essay literature as the process of embracing the dilemma and overcoming it is the way to reform essay literature. This is considered as the special value in the essay theory by Yeolgyu Kim.
