오리엔탈리즘을 넘어서, 세계 미술 속의 한국 현대 공예: 2013청주국제공예비엔날레 《마더 & 차일드》전의 의미와 시각 (Beyond the Orientalism: The Perspective and the Meaning of “Mother & Child,” the Main Exhibition of the 2013 Cheongju International Craft Biennale)

초록

이 글은 동시대 한국 현대공예의 현상을 청주국제공예비엔날레라는 문화적 소통의 장을 통해 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 동시대는 문화의 다양한 양상이 공존하는 다문화주의(multi-culturalism)를 속성으로 문화의 종속성이나 위계성에서 탈피하여 개체의 중요성이 더욱 강조되고 있다. 한국 현대 공예는 근대 이래 ‘공예’라는 개념의 도입과 함께 서구적 범주와 체제를 수용하면서 적지 않은 정체성 혼란의 역사를 지나왔다. 새로운 시대적 조건으로서 산업화를 지나면서 공예는 속성으로서의 예술 범주와, 생산과 실제 삶에서의 유통으로서 산업 범주를 오가며 혼성적인 존재감을 갖은 탓이다. 여기에 아카데미와 단절한 전승 공예로 하여 다층적인 구조를 만들어왔다.
그럼에도 불구하고 1999년 청주국제공예비엔날레가 공예문화 소통의 장으로 출발함으로써 각각의 문제들이 서로 노출되며 그간 집중되어온 관심사들과 문제들을 제시하는 계기가 된 것이다. 이 행사가 국제적인 공예비엔날레로서 굳건한 위치를 차지하지는 못한 실정이지만 적어도 현재 공예의 트렌드를 반영하고 한국에서의 실질적인 현상을 반영하는 데 기여하는 것은 분명한 사실이다. 그런 의미에서 2013청주국제공예비엔날레 본전시는 이 같은 그간의 현실을 인식하고 공예의 주요한 가치로서, 곰브리치(Gombrich)가 현대미술이 상실했다는 ‘거장성 또는 탁월함(Meisterschaft)’과 담론을 보고자 한다. ‘운명적 만남, 마더&차일드’라는 개념을 통해 인류의 문명과 사유가 오늘에 이르렀던 일체의 관계와 개입의 시선으로 공예를 바라볼 것을 제안하고 있다. 세계 미술 속의 한국 현대공예는 이러한 동시대적 패러다임 아래 한국의 역사성과 특수성의 조건에서 만들어진 청주국제공예비엔날레를 통해 서구의 오리엔탈리즘적 시선을 넘어 탈경계와 혼성의 상황성을 현상적으로 제안하여 보여주고 있다.

영어초록

In these days, the various aspects of contemporary culture are coexisting at the same time. In this point of view, the contemporary society with multi-culturalism is rather handled with the energy of periphery and narrative than driven by a central ideology. This epoch finds the meanings in the individual’s competence and identity above all, out of cultural subordination or rank.
This writing started with the discussions on the concept, category, and phenomenon of the universal contradiction that craft contains in the pursuit of the Korean contemporary craft’s position within the art of the world. This study has pointed out that Korean craft exists in a dual structure with its identical dispute. Meanwhile, the Cheongju International Craft Biennale began in 1999 and has put the basis on vitalizing the present discourse by attempting communications among diverse debates. There is another problem in the craft biennale, of course, in such circumstances as most of the global art biennales have been isolated from public or have intervened actively to make new artistic trends. The problem of craft biennales is that they deal with the individual property or mutual communication mostly within formal or material spheres. Under this circumstance, the main exhibition of the eighth Biennale aims to focus on the matter of the “Meisterschaft” that craft contains. It is the main exhibition Mother & Child to create a new discourse on the basis of the fact that craft as the materialistic and aesthetic entity is grounded on the most familiar reality of life. The humankind coexists and evolves within the influences from the previous things such as politics, society, religion, art, culture, nature, and environment or surroundings; and now creates dynamics in various ways due to the advanced communications. Like the intimacy of what is close or the freshness of what is at a distance, diverse factors understand their ‘differences’ and grow through them. The human, art, nature and environment all grow within the relationships with whatever around them or with previous things. I observe that the whole relationships of them are analogous with that of “Mother and Child.” In the relationship of the both sides, there are mutual cares, individual life of struggles, and the sublimes generated by some of the third factor in this relationship, which is the power of succeeding history. To sum up, the main exhibition Mother & Child intends to allow people to experience a mutual healing time for their mind and body by suggesting former cyclings of this relationship.
