노천명 시와 번역 속에 나타난 분열과 봉합의 환상 - ‘고향’과 ‘소녀’ 이미지를 중심으로 (The Fantasy of self fragmentation revealed in the poems and translations of Noh Cheonmyeong - focused on the images of ‘hometown’ and ‘girl’)

초록

노천명은 현대시문학사에 남을 비중 있는 작품들을 많이 남긴 시인이지만, ‘고독’ ‘향수’ ‘결손의식’ 등에 치중된 한정적 평가를 받아온 바 있고, 센티멘털리즘이나 역사의식 결여를 지적받기도 했다. 여기에는 ‘여류’에 대한 기존 편견이나 노천명 개인에 대한 평가가 작용한 부분이 있다. 그러나 단순히 얕은 감상성이나 개인의 성향, 기질 등을 원인으로 치부하기에 노천명의 작품에 드러나는 고독과 향수는 좀 더 복잡하고 깊은 내면적 뿌리를 가지고 있다.
본 논문은 노천명에게서 발견되는 몇몇 모순되는 지점들에 주목했다. 노천명은 서로 섞이거나 공존할 수 없는 이중적인 정체성 여러 개를 동시에 가지고 있는 상태로 둘 사이에서 방황하였으며 이는 노천명 시 속에 자기 분열을 만들어내고, 시인은 그 분열을 인식하며 그것을 봉합하려는 지속적인 시도로서 ‘소녀’와 ‘고향’이미지를 불러온다. ‘고향’ 이미지는 분열이 이루어지기 전의 온전한 자기 자신에 대한 과거회귀의 욕망을 담고 있으며 시인은 자기동일성을 가지고 있었던 과거의 자신인 ‘소녀’와 ‘근원’으로서의 ‘고향’ 혹은 ‘고향집’을 재구성해 환상적으로 호명한 후 ‘고독’을 통해 유폐시킴으로서 보존하려는 열망을 보여준다. 이는 내적 분열을 봉합하기 위한 노천명의 자기방어기제가 문학적으로 구현된 것으로 볼 수 있다.
물론 자기 분열의 봉합은 환상적으로 이루어질 뿐, 자신의 이중성을 실제로 극복하는 현실적 응전력을 갖추지는 못하기에 화자는 과거회귀에서 실패하여 현실로 돌아와 더 큰 참혹한 심정을 느끼며, 그것이 비극적 시간 인식으로 나타나기도 한다.
본 논문에서 주목한 점은 노천명의 시 속 ‘고독’이나 ‘향수’가 단순한 감상성의 소산이 아닌, 파편화되고 찢어진 시인의 자아가 그 분열을 야기하는 조건들을 부정적으로 인식하고 벌인 심리적 투쟁이라는 것이다. 다중적인 정체성을 가지고 있는 사람의 자아의 미묘성과 복잡성이 무시되고, 둘 중 하나를 선택해야 하는 이분법적 선택의 강요가 계속되었던 것이 노천명의 자아분열을 만들었으며, 그녀의 작품은 ‘찢어진 자아’를 가진 근대인의 고통과 결핍의식, 그것을 해소하려는 심리적 과정이었다. 노천명 작품 속에 드러나는 욕망과 행동 사이의 괴리, 작품 속 지향과 실제 행보간의 모순 등은 그 자체가 노천명의 자기분열을 드러내주며, 노천명 시들은 폭력적 현실에 대한 어떤 ‘손상의 감각’을 보여주고 있다.
또한 본 논문은 기존에 거의 다루어진 바 없는 노천명의 번역 작품에 관심을 가지고 소개하며 유의미한 연구 지점들을 밝혀내고자 했다. 이 시기 노천명의 내면 풍경을 보다 면밀하게 가늠하기 위해서 이 번역 작품들은 비슷한 시기 창작된 친일시, 고향이미지 시와 동시에 놓고 분석, 검토되어야 한다.
이 논문의 목적은 노천명의 내면 풍경을 응시하여 모순과 역설의 지점을 포착하고, 노천명의 내적 심리를 분석하여 노천명 문학의 기존 평가가 다 조망하지 못했던 부분들을 살펴봄으로써 노천명 시의 시사적 의의를 재평가하는 데 있다.

영어초록

Noh Cheonmyeong was a self-conscious female poet who left behind many significant works of modern poetry history. Despite this, in many discussions of her works, by associating her work with ‘loneliness’, ‘nostalgia’, and ‘a sense of lonliness’ etc., her works are dismissed as mentally weak and sentimental, which has been the reason she was labeled a poet lacking a sense of history, when in fact the loneliness and nostalgia captured in the words of Noh Cheonmyeong are a bit more complex and deep rooted to merely be regarded as simply characteristic dispositions or shallow sentiments.
Several paradoxical points are continuously discovered about Noh Cheonmyeong. While the poetry of Noh Cheonmyeong show a control of emotion and a beautiful constraint of language, the prose and autobiographical writing found in some of her novels show a prominent expression of emotion and sentiment. Also while showing an almost fastidious moralistic side in her works and in her life, sometimes she expressed female eroticism, and while showing a love for our national culture she also committed error in creating pro-Japanese poems that contributed to propaganda literature.
While antisocial and exclusive, she also revealed understanding about the greater society from the role of a ‘literary man’(文士). As a female who had received modern education and as an English Literature major with a profound knowledge of western culture, she obsessively demanded the institutions and customs of the countryside and a rural world, and even though she lived in city settings for most of her life, she rejected the notion of cities.
How did such a paradoxical figure come to be? The paradox of the modern educated women that suffered from colonization of not being able to achieve freedom as a ‘modern individual’, the paradox of being a ‘literary man’(文士) living with societal restrictions as a woman who was defined by the male dominant discourses of the day, and the paradox of having formulated her soul as a child growing up in Changyon, South Hwanghae, but ultimately living in cities all her life without being able to return home etc., are the fragmented paradoxes that are hidden in plain sight in the works of Noh Cheonmyeong.
Ultimately Noh Cheonmyeong possessed several fragmented identities that could not be mixed or co-exist, and she drifted between these existences and self-contradictory points are continuously discovered in her life. The fact that the delicacy and complexity of a person with a multidimensional identity was ignored, and a society where a dichotomous decision was required can be said to have been the reasons for the self fragmentation of Noh Cheonmyeong.
Noh Cheonmyeong‘s resistance to her own the self fragmentation brought up the images of ’고향(hometown)‘ and ’소녀(girl)’. Those images contained the desire of regression and the eagerness to try to call up herself in the past and her hometown in the imaginative way. Afterward, the poet wanted to preserve them by the way of ‘lonesome’. Those images were intended to make a fantasy for healing the self fragmentation.
This research study focuses on the multiple identities and self fragmentation revealed in the works of Noh Cheonmyeong and analyzes her poems, translations and prose texts in the process.
By referencing the life of Noh Cheonmyeong, it is attempted to examine how the neurotic self defense matters to protect herself amidst the violent decision making trauma that caused her endless fragmentation manifest in her literary works. ‘Gohyang’ (Hometown) and ‘Hyangsoo’ (Nostalgia) of Noh Cheonmyeong and also ‘Godok’ (Lonliness) can be considered to be parts of such self defense.
