초록

This study researched the color images of movie costume and circumstance in <The Great Gatsby>, and the methodology is focused to DVD and literatures of <The Great Gatsby>, and contents in newspaper, internet newsThe results are as followings.
First, looking at the color image expressed in the costume, Jay Gatsby’s materialistic character is expressed as colorful golden suit, and idealistic love toward old lover is expressed as pure white suit. Nick carraway wore the black suit in the scene unveiling his moral aspect, and the brown coat showed his conservative favor and believable character. Also, Day Jay Buchanan wore the purple dress implying her elegance as a high class lady, and the golden dress is the symbol of materialism. Tom buchanan’s blue shirts and blue suit represent the duplicity of his look as a gentleman and his corruption, and his black suit means the dignified and majestic authority.
Second, as the color image in circumstance of movie, impossible love with Day Jay is represented in shiny green light, and the red mad party in the apartment in New York shows their violence and extreme hedonism. Jay Gatsby’s yellow car shows his fancy life with money, fortune, and honor. And, contrary to his colorful golden residence, the outside gray zone refers to his vain and devastated life.
Likewise, with the circumstance image industry is growing, the color image in movies has huge symbolistic role in delivering the flow and image of the movie. And, to suggest the new direction of movie costume, further studies of various expressing method of color image are needed.
