구비설화 속 속신(俗信)의 형태와 구술담화적 기능 - 도깨비이야기’를 중심으로 - (Types of Superstitions in Folktales and Functions of Oral Narratives - focusing on ‘Dokkebi stories’ -)

초록

이 연구는 한국인의 삶과 상상력이 만들어낸 도깨비이야기 속 속신들을 통해 그 속에 내포된 민간의 의식과 속신의 구술담화적 기능에 대해 살핀 것이다.
속신에 내포된 민간의 의식에 있어 첫째, 도깨비는 사람의 형상으로 묘사되어 인간과 공존하고 있지만, 인간이 지나치게 도깨비와 친밀하면 화를 당하고 목숨까지도 위태롭다고 경고한다. 그리고 도깨비의 정체는 피, 특히 월경혈(月經血)과 결부되어 피에 대한 원초적인 생명력과 함께 월경혈에 대한 부정과 공포의 정서를 드러내고 있다.
둘째, 도깨비속신에는 민간의 욕망이 투사되어 있는데, “도깨비와 사귀면 부자 된다.”라는 속신을 모태로 갖가지 속신을 생성시키면서, 현실적으로는 불가능한 부(富)와 명예에 대한 민간의 소망을 펼쳐나가고 있다. 이러한 이야기들에는 도깨비와 사귀는 방법, 도깨비의 능력, 도깨비와 맞서는 인간의 대응 등이 속신을 통해 구체화되고 있다.
셋째, 도깨비속신에는 민간의 음양오행관(陰陽五行觀)이 반영되어 있는데, 여기에는 음양의 조화를 통해 질서와 균형을 유지하고자 하는 민간의 사고가 내재해 있다. 특히 ‘말[馬]･흰색･왼쪽’이라는 양(陽)의 기운과 신성함으로 음(陰)의 기운을 지닌 귀물(鬼物) 도깨비를 퇴치하려는 민간의 대응방식이 잘 드러나 있다.
넷째, 우리 민간에서는 도깨비에 대해 양가감정(兩價感情)을 가지고 있어 도깨비를 교제와 활용의 대상임과 동시에 퇴치의 대상으로 여기고 있다. 그래서 도깨비를 적절히 활용하고 적당한 때에 퇴치하기 위한 묘안으로 ‘금기･대처･예방’의 형태로 속신을 구성해 내고 있음을 볼 수 있다.
도깨비속신의 구술담화적 기능에 있어 속신은 이야기의 소재 구실을 하면서 또한 서사구조를 결정짓는데, 특히 도깨비이야기는 핵심적인 속신을 기반으로 담화를 구성해 나가면서 거기에 부가적인 속신들을 투입시킴으로써 하위유형과 각편(version)을 만들어내고 있어 주목된다. 즉 속신을 매개체로 이야기가 생성되어 순환하며 확산되는 특징을 보이는 것이다. 이는 도깨비이야기 속의 속신들이 담화를 구성하는 긴요한 장치가 되어 이야기를 재생산해 내는 데에 기여하고 있음을 의미한다.

영어초록

This study examines looks into superstitions in Dokkebi stories created by Korean people’s lives and imagination and discusses popular consciousness connoted in the superstitions and the functions of oral narratives.
Concerning the implicit popular consciousness, we will discuss the following. Firstly, despite the fact that Dokkebi, as a depiction of a human figure, coexists with humans, people are warned that they might suffer misfortune and put their lives at risk if they become excessively close to Dokkebi. Additionally, the identity of Dokkebi is tied with blood, in particular, menstrual blood, which reveals raw vitality of blood and bad luck and fear for menstrual blood at the same time.
Secondly, superstitions involving Dokkebi reflect human desire. Various types of superstitions have been born from the original superstition, ‘people become rich if they make friends with Dokkebi’, which reveals the human desire for wealth and honor that is difficult to achieve in reality. The superstitions in Dokkebi folktales provide a detailed look into how people make friends with Dokkebi, what kind of abilities Dokkebi have, and how humans stand up to Dokkebi.
Thirdly, Dokkebi superstitions reflect a popular view of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements, revealing the inherent popular idea of maintaining order and balance through the harmony of Yin and Yang. In particular, it clearly shows how common people try to fight off Dokkebi possessing the Yin energy, with the means of ‘a horse, a white color and the left side’that represents the Yang energy and holiness.
Fourthly, given the popular ambivalence toward Dokkebi, people regard Dokkebi as a subject to make use of and be friends with as well as to fight off. Therefore, people construct the plot of superstitions in the forms of ‘taboo, handling and prevention’in an effort to find ways to make use of Dokkebi and fight them off at the right time.
For the functions of oral narratives, superstitions are the subject matter of Dokkebi stories and determine the narrative structures. It is noticeable that oral narratives of Dokkebi stories are structured centering around a main superstition and give birth to their subtypes and different versions by introducing additional superstitions. It is characteristic of Dokkebi stories that superstitions are used as the medium for the stories to be born, circulated and spread around. Superstitions in Dokkebi folktales are an essential part of the oral narratives, contributing to the reproduction of Dokkebi stories.
