유아의 그림책 속 인물 이해 탐색: 글 없는 그림책을 중심으로 (A Qualitative Study on Children's Understanding of Characters of Picture books : Focused on the Wordless Picture books)

초록

본 연구는 유아가 그림책 속 등장인물을 어떻게 이해하는지를 알아보고자, K시 H유치원의 만 5세반 유아 25명에게 글 없는 그림책, 「Frog goes to dinner」를 보고난 후 그림책 이야기를 재화하도록하였다. 먼저, 유아들은 등장인물의 외형적 특성을 이해함에 있어서, 인물의 겉모습이 상대방과의 공유된 지식에 대한 이해를 토대로 굳이 말하지 않아도 되는 것이라고 여겨 대부분 생략을 하는 모습을보였다. 또한 인물의 움직임과 이동을 포함한 행동에 대해 다양한 의성어와 의태어를 사용함으로써생동감 있는 묘사를 시도하였으며, 등장인물들을 구분하지 못하여 인물 간 혼동을 경험하기도 하였다.
다음으로, 등장인물의 내면적 특성에 대한 이해에 있어서, 유아들은 전후 맥락을 활용하여 인물의 감정을 추론해내는 모습을 보였으며, 그림의 세부적 단서를 통해 등장인물의 말이나 대화를 창조해 냄으로써 자신이 파악한 인물의 생각이나 감정을 드러내기도 하였다. 끝으로, 유아들은 자신만의 독특한기준을 가지고 그림책 속 등장인물을 자기 나름대로 만들어갔다. 즉, 유아들은 자신이 생각하는 인물의 범주에 사람과 동물 이외에 사물을 포함시킴으로써 물활론적 사고를 나타냈으며, 이야기 속 주인공을 찾고 이해하기 위한 자기 나름의 기준을 확립하고 있음이 드러났다. 본 연구 결과가 총체적인 유아의 이야기 이해과정 및 인간행동에 대한 이해와 효율적인 문학교육의 기초를 마련하는 데 활용될수 있기를 기대한다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study was to examine how preschoolers comprehend the characters of picture books. Twenty-five five-year-old preschoolers attending a kindergarten in the city of K, restate the characters with their own words after reading a picture book,「Frog goes to dinner」. Preschoolers were semi-structurally interviewed one-on-one, and the collected data were analyzed and interpreted.
The findings of the study on the understanding of the preschoolers about the external looks and behavior of the characters were as follows: First, they omit describing figures of the characters, considering that unnecessary, because they thought they already shared the knowledge with one another and consequently didn't consider it necessary to mention that. Second, they made use of a wide variety of onomatopoeic and mimetic words to describe the movement and behavior of the characters. Third, they were confused about the characters as they didn't clearly discriminate among the appearance of the characters, especially that of the adult male characters.
And then how the preschoolers understand the inner feelings or intention of the characters was analyzed; it was found that they inferred the emotion of the characters by considering the preceding and following contexts, and they mentioned the consequences of their feelings together. It implied that they have an ability to infer emotions and feelings of others and understand causal relationships. In addition, they imagined what the characters would say to themselves or to each other based on the clues they found in the pictures, which showed how they understood the ideas or feelings of the characters.
Finally, the preschoolers created the characters in their own way by their own unique standard.
They were found to have an animist thinking, since they put objects in the category of characters, and this is differentiated from the standard of adults in general. At the same time, the preschoolers set their own unique standard to find and understand the main character in the picture book not only by taking their own experience but by taking the cover, title and plot into account.
