국사(한국사) 교과서 속 <민족> 서술의 변화와 그 배경 (Nation in Korean History Textbooks：Tendencies in Description)

초록

우리는 ‘민족(民族)’이라는 단어를 자주 접하고 사용하고 있으나, 정작 ‘민족’에 대한 정확한 개념을 이해하고 있지 못하다. 통념적인 ‘민족’은 추상적‧관념적 성격을 지니고 있으며, 이는 역사교육 본연의 목적보다는 시대 상황이 초래한 정치적 목적에 의해 이용되었다. 이런 상황 속에서 ‘민족’에 대한 개념 정의와 형성 시기에 대한 학계의 연구 성과는 교과서에 충실히 반영되지 못했고, 일부 반영된 부분도 잘못된 학설에 의한 개념의 오류와 이데올로기적인 서술을 무비판적으로 답습하였다. 최근에는 이러한 서술조차도 찾아보기 힘들 정도로 민족에 관련된 서술이 대폭 축소되거나 삭제되는 수준에 이르렀다. 현재 우리는 남북통일과 다문화 사회의 통합이라는 시대적 과제를 안고 있으며, 세계화의 흐름 속에 있다. 이런 사회 변화와는 달리, 교과서의 서술은 여전히 우리 민족의 우수성과 유구(悠久)함 및 단일민족(單一民族)임을 강조하여 자칫 배타적인 역사의식을 심어줄 우려가 있다. 최근 개정 교육과정에서 이러한 서술은 상당 부분 사라졌으나, 오히려 민족에 관련된 서술을 지나치게 소략하여 ‘민족’의 실체에 대한 고민조차 할 수 없게 되었다. 그리하여 본 연구는 고등학교 한국사 교과서에 반영된 한국 민족 형성에 관련된 서술을 분석하여, 서술의 문제점과 경향성을 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 통해 현재 우리의 현실과 괴리감이 큰 역사교육에서의 민족사 교육의 현 주소를 인식하고, 이를 개선해야 한다는 과제를 제시하고자 하였다.

영어초록

Descriptions regarding nation in Korean history textbooks from 1962 to 2011 can be summarized to have four tendencies as follows.
First, the terms - nation, race, and ethnic group - are not clearly differentiated, but are presented to be one same concept and used interchangeably. According to the race classification which divides people into white, yellow, and black races, Korean is the yellow race. However, studies have already shown that such a simple race classification is invalid. Thus, it is problematic that such description is still used in Korean history textbooks.
Second, nations are classified by language, such as Ural-Altaic or Altaic language. As the theories regarding nation have not been firmly established, such a vague description of nation can rather cause confusion in understanding the origin of nation.
Third, there is a problem in the paradigm that descriptions regarding nation just follow the old theories that are inaccurate, instead of incorporating new study findings in the field, and are based on subjective descriptions rather than scientific evidence, providing ambiguous explanation of the concept of nation. Korean nation, in particular, is described that it originated from a single root, a single ancestor.
Fourth, as a shift in the type of archeological relics is regarded as a replacement of ethnic group, a change in the type of the excavated earthenwares is seen as an inflow of another ethnic group. However, a shift in the earthenwares does not necessarily mean a replacement of ethnic group. Therefore, it is problematic to assert that a shift in archeological relics is same as a replacement of ethnic group.
So far, education regarding nation through Korean history textbooks has kept the consistent perspective of national history. The contents of the descriptions regarding nation have either followed some inaccurate theories of the old textbooks or reflected a political ideology of the time, failing to incorporate updated study findings achieved in the field. Even when there were changes in the descriptions by time period, such changes were significantly subjected to political situations of the times.
Textbooks that are to be published in the future should present descriptions based on specific, accurate evidence and the true nature of Korean nation rather than the ideology that emphasizes national superiority, glory of old history, or being a single-race nation.
