구비설화 속 노구 업의 형상화와 의미 (The Literary Imagery and Meaning of Nohgu-eop in the oral narrative)

초록

본 연구에서는 설화 ‘단명할 사람 배필 잘 얻어 살아나기’ 형과, ‘쫓겨난 며느리와 숯구이 총각’ 형을 텍스트로 하여, 주인공의 결연에 조력자로 등장하는 노구에 대한 인식과 그 의미를 분석했다. 설화에서 노구는 주인공이 운명을 극복하는 것을 돕기 위해 남녀의 야합을 주선하는 노구 업을 하고 있다. ‘단명할 사람 배필 잘 얻어 살아나기’에서는 단명의 위기에 처한 주인공이 연명할 수 있도록 정승집 딸과의 만남을 주선하고, ‘쫓겨난 며느리와 숯구이 총각’형에서는 양반가에서 쫓겨난 며느리와 숯구이 총각의 연분을 매개하는 위치에 있다. 설화에서 주인공들이 처한 고난은 타고난 운명과 사회적 모순에 따른 결과로 나눌 수 있는데, 전자를 극복하도록 돕는 경우 노구는 신이한 존재로 인식되지만, 후자를 극복하도록 돕는 경우 노구는 현실적이고 세태를 반영하는 인물로 인식된다.
조선 후기 노구 업을 행한 자는 형추와 도배의 무거운 벌을 받았다. 지배층의 입장에서 노구 업은 표면적으로 강상의 윤리에 어긋나는 행위이고, 이면적으로 신분적 위계질서를 위협하는 행위였으므로 강한 규제가 필요했을 것이다. 그러나 서민들에게 노구는 생계 수단이 없는 이웃으로, 그가 주선한 신분을 넘나드는 야합은 계급적 일탈의 흥밋거리로 여겨졌다고 본다. 게다가 설화 속에서 노구는 현실적인 인물보다 신적인 인물로 의미 있게 존재하는데, 이는 민간에서 할미신앙이 유효한 점과 연관된다. 한편 사회적 소수자인 전승자들에게 노구는 처벌의 대상이 아닌 사회‧경제적 공감을 불러오는 존재로 나타나는데, 이는 설화 속 주인공과 노구의 관계를 통해 알 수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 노구에 대한 지배담론을 벗어나기는 힘들어 노구의 활약은 축소되고, 업은 우연이나 연분으로 미화되어 있다.

영어초록

In this study, the perception and meaning of Nohgu, who appears as a helper in the relationship of the main character, was analyzed using the folktale “A short-lived man gets a wife and lives well” and “an ousted daughter-in-law and a charcoal-grilling bachelor” as texts. In the tale Nohgu arranges an undesirable relationship between men and women to help the main character overcome his fate. Nohgu in the tale “A short-lived man gets a wife and lives well” is in a position to arrange a meeting with the daughter of the Jeongseung family so that the protagonist in danger of short-lived life can survive, and in the tale “an ousted daughter-in-law and a charcoal-grilling bachelor” is in a position to mediate the relationship between the expelled baekjeong daughter-in- law and a bachelor who sells charcoal. The hardships faced by the main characters in the narrative can be divided into the results of natural fate and social contradiction. When helping to overcome the former, Nohgu is recognized as a divine being, but when helping to overcome the latter, Nohgu is recognized as a realistic and reflective person.
Those who carried out Nohgu-eop in the late Joseon Dynasty were severely punished by torture hitting shins and exile to the island. From the perspective of the ruling class, strong regulation would have been needed because the Nohgu-eop was ostensibly contrary to the ethics and threatened the hierarchical order of status. However, in the story, Nohgu is a neighbor without a means of living, and is a divine being related to the faith of Grandmother. The inappropriate relationship between men and women which she arranged, was considered an interest in a class deviation. On the other hand, for the socially disadvantaged storytellers, Nohgu is not subject to punishment, but it brings social and economic empathy, which can be seen through the relationship between Nohgu and the main character in the story. Nevertheless, it is difficult to escape the discourse of control over Nohgu, so the performance of Nohgu is reduced, and the Nohgu-eop is decorated as if it were a coincidence.
