조선시대 世稿의 개념과 刊行 양상 (Meaning of Sego and Aspects of Its Publication in Joseon Dynasty)

초록

본 논문은 조선시대에 刊行된 世稿를 조사하여 개념과 간행 양상을 정리하는 데에 목적을 두었다. 世稿는 한 가문에서 2명 이상의 저서를 합하여 만든 전적으로 개인의 저술을 비롯하여 해당 가문에 이르기까지 연구 활용도가 높은 자료이다. 하지만 이전까지 世稿에 대한 연구는 개인 또는 가문의 문학과 학문 성향 연구에서 참고자료로 사용되거나, 문집을 포함한 종합적인 연구에서 자료로 활용되었다. 世稿에 관한 연구도 있었지만 대부분 수록된 글을 위주로 다루고 있어서 世稿 자체를 대상으로 진행한 전반적인 연구는 많지 않은 편이다. 그러므로 본 연구에서는 조선 시대에 간행된 世稿를 통해 개념과 간행 양상에 대해서 살펴보고자 한다.
世稿의 刊行 양상을 살펴보기 전에 먼저 世稿에 사용되는 書名과 書名을 짓는 방식, 구성과 성격 등 기본적인 부분부터 살펴보았다. ‘世稿’라는 명칭 이외의 여러 단어를 사용하여 세고류 전적임을 표현하고 있다. 다양한 명칭만큼 書名을 짓는 방식에서도 많은 유형이 존재하였다. 구성과 성격은 수록 저서와 수록 인물들 간의 관계를 기준으로 정리하였다.
世稿의 간행 양상은 판종과 시대를 기준으로 나누어서 살펴보았다. 세고 간행에 쓰인 인쇄방식은 목판 인쇄, 목활자 인쇄, 금속활자 인쇄로 크게 나뉜다. 현전하는 세고는 목판본이 가장 많고 그다음 목활자본이며, 금속활자본이 가장 적게 남아있다. 시기는 세고의 간행량을 기준으로 보았을 때 초기, 중기, 후기로 나누었다. 초기에는 간행 수가 적었지만, 시간이 흐를수록 간행량이 증가하고 수록된 인물의 수도 증가하는 모습을 보인다.

This study aims to investigate Sego (世稿) that was published during the Joseon Dynasty, thereby intending to summarize the flow and publication of Sego at the time. Sego refers to the anthology of a family that typically consists of the posthumous works and writings of more than two members of a family. From the perspective of containing the writings of multiple persons from a family. it is the highly utilized data covering the entire domain of a study from an individual to a family. Thus far, studies on Sego have been used for the reference data in the literature of individuals or the families as well as in the study on academic orientation, or as the data for a comprehensive study including the collections of writings. There have also been studies on Sego itself, but most of the studies mainly referred to the writings contained in Sego. Since there are not many studies conducted on Sego itself, this study intends to explore the patterns and characteristics of Sego that have been complied and published during the Joseon Dynasty based on the data investigated.
Before exploring the patterns in the compilation and publication of Sego, the fundamental domains typically used in Sego such as the names of books, the nomenclature for books, the composition and nature of books were first examined. Just as Byuljib (別集: a collection of works of an individual) has various other names, Sego also uses various words other than the ‘Sego’ to represent the Sego type books. There were as many ways in the nomenclature as the various names of books. It was possible to identify the composition and nature of the books based on the relationship between the type of books included and their authors.
The patterns and publications of Sego were explored by dividing them into editions and times. The methods employed in the publication of Sego include woodblock, wood typography, and metal typography. Of the existing Sego, the largest number is a woodblock type, followed by wood typography, and then metal typography showed the least. The period was categorized into the early, mid, and late periods based on the amount of compilation and publication in Segos. In the early period, the number of compilations and publications was small, however as time passed, the numbers increased and the average number of people who listed the works in Sego also increased.
