초록

이 논문의 목적은 「삼국기」(상편, 1972~1973), 「대왕암」(하편, 1974~1975)에 형상화 된 경주(신라)의 신화화 방식과 합일의 시·공간으로 상정된 경주(신라)라는 공동체가 지닌 폭력적 특성을 분석함에 의해서 개인과 민족/국가의 합일을 통해 근대인의 분리의식을 극복하는 방식이 지닌 의미와 이의 허구성에 대해서 고찰하는 것이다. 이는 근대성의 경험과 개인과 민족/국가의 합일에의 열망,근대인의 과거로의 회귀의식과 근대성의 극복에의 열망, 그리고 민족/국가를 절대화 시키는 이데올로기가 지닌 폭력적 성격에 대해 규명하는 것이기도 하다.
김동리는 근대인의 분리의식을 극복하는 방식들 중의 하나로서, 개인과 민족/국가의 완전한 합일을 제시한다. 이 방식은 분리된 개별자로서의 불안과 공포를극복하고자 하는 인간의 근원적인 본능에서 비롯된 것으로서, 분열되지 않은 원초적 시·공간으로 회귀하고자 하는 열망과 밀접한 연관성을 갖고 있다. 이러한 김동리의 사상이 가장 선명하게 나타난 문학작품이 장편 역사 소설 「삼국기」(상편,1972~1973), 「대왕암」(하편, 1974~1975)이다. 이 소설에서 합일에 대한 열망은 경주(신라)를 개인 간의 분리의식, 죽음에 의한 분리의식이 존재하지 않는시·공간으로 신화화 시키는 방식을 통해 드러난다. 김동리는 경주(신라)를 개인간의 완전한 소통의 공간이자, 윤리적 공간으로 설정하며, 백제·고구려를 단절의공간이자, 비(非)윤리적 공간으로 상정한다. 이러한 방식은 기본적으로 선/악의이분법적 구도를 설정하고, 경주(신라)를 선(善), 백제·고구려를 악(惡)으로 상정하는 것으로서, 궁극적으로 백제·고구려를 완전히 타자화 시키는 것이다. 그러나완전한 합일의 시·공간으로 설정된 경주(신라)는 역설적이게도 개인의 희생을 통해 실현된다. 이러한 개인의 희생을 정당화 시키는 이데올로기는 충성과 효도라는 윤리이다. 이는 거부할 수 없는 도덕적, 감성적 판단규범으로서 전 사회 구성원들을 상하의 수직적 질서에 종속시키는 핵심적인 기능을 담당한다. 이러한 판단규범의 절대성으로 인해서 민족/국가를 위한 개인의 희생은 합리화, 정당화 된다. 또한 경주(신라)에 의한 삼국통일 과정은 신라인은 하나라는 감정을 자극함에의해서 자발적인 희생을 유도하는 방식을 통해서 실현된다.
이와 같이 장편 역사 소설 「삼국기」(상편, 1972~1973), 「대왕암」(하편, 1974~1975)은 표면적으로 개인과 민족/국가의 낭만적 결합과정을 제시하고 있지만,이 소설이 궁극적으로 보여주는 것은 개인이 민족/국가에 의해서 소멸/삭제되는양상이다. 그러나 김동리 소설에 형상화 되는 민족/국가에 대한 신화화 방식은근본적으로 근대인의 분리의식을 극복하기 위하여 설정된 것이라는 점에서, 정치집단의 이익을 위한 국가주의와는 차별성을 갖는다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to study the significance of a way to overcome separation of consciousness in modern people through the unity between individuals and ethnic group/nation and its fictiveness, analyzing the violent characteristics of a community, Gyeongju(Silla), established as the mythicization of Gyeongju(Silla) embodied in “Samgukgi” (the first volume, 1972~1973) and “Daewangam” (the last volume, 1974~1975) and as time/space of unity. This paper also aims to reveal the experience in modernity, aspiration for the unity between individuals and ethnic group/nation, modern people’s homing ability to the past, a desire to overcome modernity, and the violent characteristics of the ideologies absolutizing ethnic group/nation.
Kim, Dong-Lee suggested the perfect unity between individuals and ethnic group/nation as a way to overcome separation of consciousness in modern people. This way originates in fundamental human instinct to overcome anxiety and fear arising from the separation and is closely associated with a desire to revert back to the primitive time/space which is not separated.
These Kim, Dong-Lee’s thoughts are most clearly shown in his full-length historical novels, “Samgukgi” (the first volume, 1972~1973) and “Daewangam” (the last volume, 1974~1975). In these novels, a desire for unity is unveiled, mythicizing Gyeongju(Silla), separation of consciousness in a person, and time/space in which with no separation of consciousness caused by death. Kim, Dong-Lee establishes Gyeongju(Silla) as a space for the perfect communication between individuals and an ethical space, and establishes Baekje and Goguryeo as an unethical space. This approach ultimately makes Baekje and Goguryeo separate entities, establishing dichotomous composition of good/evil and establishing Gyeongju(Silla),and Baekje and Goguryeo, as good and evil, respectively. However,Gyeongju(Silla) established as the time/space of perfect unity is, paradoxically,accomplished by individual sacrifice. The ideology justifying this individual sacrifice is loyalty and filial duty. These are irrecusable moral and emotional judgment norms, playing an important role in subordinating the members of a society to hierarchical order. Due the absoluteness of the judgement norms, the individual sacrifice for an ethnic group and a nation is rationalized and justified. Furthermore, the unification of Three Kingdoms by Silla was accomplished in a way of inducing voluntary sacrifice by stimulating the emotion of Shilla people, ‘Shilla people is one”.
Thus, “Samgukgi” (the first volume, 1972~1973) and “Daewangam” (the last volume, 1974~1975) suggested a romantic binding process superficially,yet these novels ultimately embodied a pattern in which a person became extinct and was eliminated by ethnic group/nation. Depicted in the novel Kim, Dong-Lee on ethnic / national myth set moderns separation of consciousness to overcome essentially that for the collective interests of the political nationalism, and has the distinction of.
