부산지역 도시전설의 전승양상과 성격 - 부산진구의 노년층 이야기를 중심으로 (The Properties and the Traditional Aspects of the Busan Urban Legends - Focusing on the Tales of the Elderly Population of the Busan Jingu Area)

초록

이 글은 부산지역의 노년층에 전승되고 있는 도시전설을 중심으로 그 전승양상과 성격에 대해 살핀 것이다. 부산지역의 도시전설은 주로 6.25전쟁의 피난처였던 도시의 역사적 배경과, 국가적 차원의 경제개발계획과 맞물린 사회적 배경을 바탕에 깔고 전승되고 있다.
부산지역의 도시전설 중 가장 많은 부분을 차지하고 있는 형태는 지킴이 이야기인데, 여기에는 우리나라 전래의 지킴이 신앙이 그대로 계승되고 있다. 이 이야기들은 개발붐으로 인해 부산에 아파트가 건립되고 도로가 확장되는 등 도시 전반적인 변혁의 물결이 밀어닥침으로 인해 전통적 공동체문화가 해체되는 지점에서 생겨나고 있다. 그 대상이 가택(家宅)은 물론 산, 공동묘지, 공동우물, 연못 등 다양한 공간에 걸쳐있어 지킴이 신앙의 팽배함을 보여주고 있다.
다음으로 눈여겨 볼 부분은 용(龍) 신앙의 내재인데, 학교전설에서 그 모습을 찾아볼 수 있다. 그러나 그 모습은 불완전하여 비를 내리게 하는 용의 수신적(水神的) 능력이 용이 못된 이무기에게로 전이되고 있어 용 신앙의 파편적인 모습을 보이고 있다.
부산지역 도시전설의 특징적인 모습은 도시의 역사적 배경과 근대 이후 도시민의 현실적 삶을 기반으로 형성된 이야기들에서 잘 드러난다. 부산지역은 6.25전쟁의 피난처였던 만큼 몰려든 피난민으로 인해 주택의 수요와 공급 간에 큰 차질을 빚게 되었고, 그로 인해 양택(陽宅)이 음택(陰宅)을 침범하는 일까지 발생한다. 이로 인해 공동묘지 위에 세워진 마을을 대상으로 전승되는 이야기들에는 음택 훼손에 대한 두려움과 공포, 그리고 영혼불멸 사상에 기반한 사령(死靈)에 대한 죄책감 등이 응집되어 나타나고 있다.
이러한 도시전설들에는 농경문화의 전통적 사유체계와 가속화되는 산업화 속의 현대적 사유체계가 맞물려 있다. 때문에 전통적 윤리관과 현실 삶의 충돌로 인해 빚어지는 문제에 대한 해결방안 또한 전통적 방식에 의존하여 풀어나가고 있다. 이로 인해 설화세대인 노년층에 전승되고 있는 도시전설은 지구촌시대를 살아가고 있는 오늘날의 학생들이나 젊은 세대들의 도시괴담과는 대조를 이룬다.

영어초록

This paper focuses on the legends passed down by the elders based on cities of the Busan area and the developing traditons as well as its personality. The urban legends of the Busan area has developed based on the societal context of the time when Busan became a refuge for the Korean war but at the same time an economically developing area in the nation’s grand scheme.
One of the prominent urban legend of the Busan area is the “Jikimi” which means the guard, keeps tue to our traditional folk belief the “Jikimi.” These stories began to develop around the time when due to a development boom, Busan started to develop their city such as apartment constructions and road developments. In the process the traditional sense of community started to crumble. The subject of the legends include houses, mountains, public graveyards, public wells, pond and other varieties of areas which shows the prevailing nature of the “Jikimi” belief.
The next prominent part of the legend is the integration of the dragon myths and it is in the school myths that one can find its existence. However the form of the legend is unstable and the dragon‘s nature as the water god who can give rain to the people, has been deformed into a “Imoogi” or a snake that could not turn into a dragon, which shows the fragmented status of the belief.
The city legends of the Busan area meticulously express the historical background of the city and the real contemporary lives of the people living in the city. Due to the fact that the Busan area was a refuge for the Korean war, there was a great rift between the supply and demand for the residential areas, due to this the Yangtaek(a house - an east asian belief of energy in the soil) had become invaded by the Eumtaek(a grave - another east asian belief concerning energies of the soil. It has a counter active nature with the Yangtaek). Thus the development of towns over the public graveyards, created legends about the tales of the everlasting vengeful spirits which stemmed from their fear and regrets about the desecration of the Eumtaek.
Such urban legends are the overlapping aspect between the agricultural and the rapid industrial societal beliefs. Therefore the solution to the, clash between the ethical beliefs of the traditional ways and the realities of the contemporary, is also found in the traditional ways. As a result the urban legends passed on from the generation of story tellers, are in sharp contrast to the urban legends of today’s younger generations.
