초록

偰長壽(1341~1399)는 위그르인으로서 원에서 귀화하여 고려말 조선초를 살았던 인물이다. 원에서도 귀화인으로 살아야 하였던 설씨 가문 사람들은 주자학적 유교 이념을 수용하고 이에 대한 실천 정신을 강조하는 한편, 적극적인 漢化를 시도하면서 성공적인 정착과 번영을 이루어내었다. 설씨 가문은 다수의 과거 합격자를 배출하며, 원의 開國에 협조한 공신 가문으로서, 유교적 소양을 갖추고 文翰職에 진출한 원의 명문가로서, 忠節 등 유교적 윤리 규범에 충실한 가문으로서의 높은 위상을 가질 수 있게 되었던 것이다. 하지만 원말 정치적인 갈등과 어려움에 직면하면서, 설씨 가문은 홍건적의 난을 계기로 고려에 귀화하였다.
부친 偰遜과 함께 고려로 귀화한 설장수는 공민왕의 후원 하에서 과거에 급제하는 한편, 관직에도 진출하고 對明 外交에서 활발한 활동을 보여주었다. 그는 고려말의 仕宦期에 자신의 정치적 지위를 유지, 강화해 나갔다. 그는 이때 李穡, 鄭夢周, 李崇仁, 金九容, 河崙, 權近 등과 交遊하면서, 대외적으로는 親明 外交 정책을 주장하는 등 新興 儒臣의 한 사람으로 자리매김하였다. 그리고 신흥 유신들이 정치적으로 갈라질 때에는 스승 李穡을 따라 온건 개혁노선을 지지함으로써 鄭道傳 등 易姓革命派와 대립하였다.
하지만 조선 건국 후, 그는 태조의 부름에도 적극 응하여 다시 한번 관직에 진출하며 활동하였다. 고려 말 국가와 운명을 같이하였음에도 불구하고 이러한 선택을 하게 된 데에는, 그의 학문적 경향과 밀접한 관련이 있었다. 그는 현실과의 관계를 중시하면서 그 속에서의 실천에 관심을 기울이고 있었기 때문이다. 물론 이것은 주자학의 도덕적 명분이라는 엄밀한 잣대를 놓고 본다면 분명 부정적으로 평가되어야 마땅한 행위였다. 하지만 그의 관심이 매우 현실적인 데에 있었다는 사실과, 귀화인으로서 원에서 치열하게 생존해야 했던 그의 가문적 특성 또한 그 영향력을 간과할 수는 없을 것이다.

영어초록

Seol Jang-su(1341~1399) was as a Wigroan. He had come from the Yuan originally and then had nationalized to the Goryo and had lived from the Goryo to the Joseon. His ancestors had to have lived as a nationalized citizen in the Yuan also. So Seol's family had accepted Neo-Confucianism and they emphasized the practical morality, they had tried to accept the Sinocentrism positively, and then they had succeeded in their settlement, their survival and their prosperity in the Goryo. A lot of Seol's family who had passed the civil service exam could have had their higher social status with merits for helping to found the Yuan, as a noble Yuan's family with keeping Confucian rule. But they had nationalized to the Goryo when they had been faced with moving away as a local official under the political conflicts of the late of the Yuan and when there had happened Red Turban Bandits in China at that time.
Seol Jang-su who had nationalized to the Goryo with his father together had passed the civil exam under the support of King Gongmin of the Goryo, had gone into the government service and had played an diplomatic activities with the Ming actively. He had kept and strengthened his political status advanced to the official at the end of the Goryo. He had kept in touch with Lee Saek, Jeong Mong-ju, Lee Sung-in, Kim Gu-yuong, Ha Ryun and Keon Kun, and had positioned as a new confucian like that he advocated to have a good relationship with the Ming diplomatically. But he had opposited to the a dynastic revolution line like Jeong Do-jeon following to his teacher, Lee Saek, when new Confucians conflict with each other.
But he had moved into the government service once again and had play an important role actively without hesitation when King Taejo of the Joseon called, just after founding the Joseon. In my point of view, this kind of his decision seemed to be resulted from the reason that he had made much importance of the relationship with reality and had focused on practicalism in spite of Goryo's official at the late of Goryo. His activities should be evaluated to be negative under the Neo-Confucianism. But I concluded that he had focused on the reality and he could not have excluded to have influence on the characteristics of Seol's family as a nationalized citizen.
