유진 오닐의 『지평선 너머』에 나타난 가족 갈등 고찰 (Consideration on Family Conflicts shown in Eugene O’Neill’s “Beyond the Horizon”)

초록

이 논문에서는 유진 오닐의 작품 『지평선 너머』에 나타난 메이오 가족 구성원들의 갈등양상에 대해 자세하게 짚어보았다. 그들의 갈등은 두 가지의 상반된 문제들에서 야기되었다. 한 가지는 다른 가족 멤버들에 대한 정신적 책임감이고, 또 다른 한 가지는 본인이 추구하는 인생에서의 구체적인 목표인데, 이 두 가지는 중심인물의 삶에서 서로 충돌한다. 이러한 갈등은 작가인 오닐의 삶 뿐 아니라 20세기 초반 미국인들의 삶에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 일이었다.
시간 순서대로 가족 구성원들의 갈등을 나열하면서, 이 논문에 나타낸 세 가지 중, 조카인 로버트와 삼촌인 스캇의 문제점은 개인이 직업을 선택하는데 있어서 어떠한 직종이 가장 적합한지 찾는 일이다. 이것은 또한 농업과 해양산업이 전문적인 직업으로 인정되던 그 당시의 시대상을 반영한다. 제임스와 그의 큰 아들 앤드류와의 부자 갈등은 가족 사업의 방향성을 설정하고 아들이 아버지의 뒤를 이어 가업을 선택할 것인지에 대한 문제이다. 이것은 두 사람의 견해 차이와 함께 성품 차이, 그리고 세대 간의 갈등을 이야기한다. 세 번째 갈등은 남편인 로버트와 그의 아내인 루스가 보여주는 개인의 삶이 어떻게 사회적 구조 안에 녹아있는지에 대한 것이고, 동시에 직업과 사랑의 모순, 그리고 이상이 현실 속에 부딪히는 과정을 보여준다.
인간의 삶에 있어서 여러 가지의 단면들을 보여주는 이 드라마틱한 이벤트들은 이러한 사건들이 엮여서 어떻게 인생의 큰 줄기를 완성해 가는지는 말해주고 있다. 누구에게서나 적용 될 수 있는 이 일들은 독자와 관객으로 하여금 자신의 삶에도 적용해 보고 공감을 끌어낼 수 있도록 하기에 충분하다. 유진 오닐의 창조적이고 새로운 이야기의 구조는 연극에 있어서 그의 작품이 왜 항상 주목의 중심에 위치하는지를 알려준다. 『지평선 너머』 뿐만 아니라 다른 모든 작품들도 마찬가지이며, 그의 작가적인 재능을 증명한다.

영어초록

In this paper, I have closely examined the types of family conflicts in Mayo household presented in “Beyond the Horizone” written by Eugene O’Neill. Their conflicts are from the two opposite problems which are mental responsibility for other family members and practical future goal for one’s life. This kind of phenomenon are common in the beginning of 20th century in America as well as in the real life of O’Neill.
Among the three conflicts which are shown in the story in terms of time manner, the one between the first nephew Robert and uncle Scott is the matter of choosing one’s profession and whether it is suitable for the individual while reflecting the phase of the time that argriculture and marine industry as the same when it becomes a choice as a job. The father and son conflict between James Mayo and his eldest son, Andrew, represents the direction of family business, and whether the son would inherite his father’s job. It also shows the differences in personality and point of views between the two different generations. The third conflict between husband Robert and the wife Ruth shows the combination of individuals’ life within the social structure, the problems of profession and love, and how these two would constrast in real life setting.
This piece showing the different stages of human life with dramatic events brings out the sympathy from the readers and audiences that the different matters in our life are somehow all connected to one another and they can be generalized. This kind of creative construction of the work are the reason why O’Neill is the subject of attention in drama. Not just in “Beyond the Horizon” but in other works as well, his such talents are commonly discovered.
The romantic emotions over the land and the sea, and diverse life styles of different characters in O’Neill’s literature are way more than the materialistic condition of a play being on the stage. It spots light on the base of art, and appeals to the audience in relation to their own lives that are similar to what the main characters are going through. The lives of Mayo family in “Beyond the Horizon” are worth to have compassion on, but at the same time, readers could criticize severely according to each individual’s choices. It there were to be more of mature conversation and consideration between the family members, the ending might have been different. The various and broad colloguial structure is another reason for us to study O’Neill continuously with the conditional changes in different generations.
