『태상감응편』의 효사상 연구 (A study on filial duty thoughts of “T`aish`anggaˇny`lngbi`an”)

초록

본 연구에서는 최근세 한국사회에 풍미한『태상감응편』의 유행을 중심으로 살펴보기로 한다.
민중의 종교로 불리는 도교가 교단체계를 갖추어 성립도교(成立道敎)가 된 것은 후한말이다. 민중적 성격은 그대로 살려져 있어서 수련중심이 아니라 민간의 신앙행위 사조가 한편에 전개되고 있었다. 특히송대에 이르러 유불도 삼교가 혼유하는 수련도교(修煉道敎)가 형성되면서 민중사이에 확산되는데, 그 가운데 민중도교의 성전으로 불리는『태상감응편』이 성립된다.
관제신앙(關帝信仰) 등 여러 요소와 더불어 후대에 이르면서 민간적요소가 강해지며 한국에 있어서도 같은 흐름을 이룬다. 조선시대의 수련도교적 특징이 계속되는 가운데, 근대의 변모형태가 민중도교요,『 태상감응편』을 중심한 권선서신앙(勸善書信仰)이 확산된다. 이러한 권선서신앙, 혹은 선서신앙은 당 중기 이후 삼교합일의 사상적 배경속에서성립된 민간교화서라 할 수 있다. 즉 삼교의 가치체계가 농후하게 젖어들어 이것이 민중들에게 다가선 것이다. 그러나, 본 논고에서 집중적으로 다룰『태상감응편』이 민중도교의 성전으로 받들어지고 있음을 볼때, 삼교 가운데에서도 도교의 영향을 가장 많이 받고 있음은 부인할 수없는 사실이다. 이는 중국인들의 사유 속에서 가장 유구한 역사를 갖는도교적인 삶의 방식과도 연관되어지는 것이라 할 수 있다.
『태상감응편』을 위시한 선서들이 사·농·공·상의 선악업보에 대해 논하고 있음을 볼 때, 이는 당시 민중세력들의 성장과도 무관하지 않는 일이다. 이러한 선서가 유행할 수 있었다는 것은 그들의 삶을 규율할 수 있는 새로운 규범들이 필요했던 사회적 요구가 뒷받침 되었다는것 또한 재언의 여지가 없다.
『태상감응편』은 비록 짧은 문자로 이뤄져 있지만, 수많은 윤리적 규율을 제시하고 있다. 현대 사회에서 가장 중시되어야 할 가정윤리가 孝라고 할 때, 효에 관한 연구는 결코 그 양의 많고 적음에 상관없이 가치있는 일일 것이다. 또한『태상감응편』의 시작이 바로「지효지보(至孝之報)」로서 출발하고 있음은 효에 대한 가치를 재인식할 수 있는 기반을제시하는 것이 아닌가 생각된다.
효사상은 유교의 영향이 대단히 강하였다. 그러나 인륜이 강조되는사회에서는 종교사상을 초월하여, 인간본연의 자세로서 받아들여지고있다. 그러나 학문적 연구의 대상으로서 그 주류를 이루고 있는 것은다름 아닌 유교와 불교의 효사상인 것이다. 따라서 본 논고에서 다루고자 하는 도교에서의 효 특히, 민중도교에서의 효 사상에 대한 연구는 선서신앙과 결부되어 거론되어지고는 있지만 거의 전무한 상태라 할 수있다.
『태상감응편』은 불로장생(不老長生)·도통신선(道通神仙)을 주장하는 도교가 수련적이 성격을 벗어나 민중사회에서 선을 행함으로써 신선을 이룬다는 것을 말하고 싶어한다. 그 가운데 나타나는 선은 사회도덕적인 선이며, 유불도 삼교의 가르침을 두루 통하는 성격이며, 특히 전통적인 선을 강조하고 있다. 이것을 특히 충효사상으로 부를 수 있을것이다.

영어초록

In this writing, the trend of T`aish`angga˘ny`lngbi`an, recently popular in the Korean society, is mainly discussed.
In the late period of Hou-Han(後漢末), Taoism, called a“ public religion”,formulated its system of the religious body and became the “established Taoism”(成立道敎). For its public characteristics, Taoism had developed the trend of the thought for the activities of public believing, not for the center of discipline. Especially, as Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism coexisted in the period of S`ong(宋), Taoism for discipline appeared and had proliferated into the life of general people. In that time, T`aish`angga˘ny`lngbi`an(太上感應篇), called the bible of public Taoism, was completed.
With the belief of Guandi(關帝) and other various circumstances, Taoism had more strongly reinforced its public characteristics, which had been diffused into Korea. While the discipline characteristics of Taoism had continued in the Chosun Dynasty(朝鮮), Taoism was transformed into the type of public Taoism and proliferated the thought of Quanshanshu(勸善書:advising to do Goodness and to study) centered on T`aish`angga˘ny`lngbi`an.
This belief of Quanshanshu or Shanshu(善書) could be an belief of public cultivation completed under the coexistence of three religions (Confucianism,Buddhism, and Taoism) after the middle era of Dang(唐). It means that the value systems of the three religions were deeply diffused into the life of general people. However, given the fact that T`aish`angga˘ny`lngbi`an was considered as the bible of public Taoism, this writing suggests that Taoism had the strongest influence among the three religions. Also, It can be related with the longest history of Taoist life-style in Chinese people.
Consideringthatmanydisciplinewritings,including T`aish`angga˘ny`lngbi`an,explains the virtue and vice retribution for the deeds of a former world (善惡業報) of the traditional four classes of society (士·農·工·商: scholars,farmers, artisans and tradesmen), it had the relationship with the growth of general people’s power. The main reason that these discipline writings were popular in that time, unquestionably, is that the social need for new normative laws to control general people’s lives was strong.
Although it consists of short writings, T`aish`angga˘ny`lngbi`an suggests a number of ethical or moral rules. As the most important ethics for general households in modern society is the filial duty , the study on the filial duty can be valuable regardless of the amount of studies. Also, that the first chapter of T`aish`angga˘ny`lngbi`an is Zhihyozhibao(至孝之報) can be to suggest the base of realizing the value of filial duty.
Generally, Confucianism has strong influence upon the thought of filial duty. However, the thought of filial duty is widely accepted as the basic virtue in the society emphasizing morality as well as the religious thought. As the subject of studies, filial duty has been dealt with mainly in Confucianism and Buddhism. Especially, the thought of filial duty in Taoism and public Taoism,which this writing mainly deals with, was shortly mentioned in the relation with the belief of Shanshu, but there is no particular study on it.
T`aish`angga˘ny`lngbi`an represents “reaching to a Taoist hermit with supernatural powers through practicing goodness in public society”, not emphasizing the discipline characteristics of Taoism such as eternal youth (不老長生)and a Taoist hermit with supernatural powers through enlightenment (道通神仙). Among them, Goodness (善) means social and moral goodness,has the characteristics widely accepted from the three religions, Confucianism,Buddhism, and Taoism, and emphasizes the traditional goodness. It is called the thought of Chunghyo(忠孝思想: loyalty and filial duty)
