북한 소설문학에 묘사된 대학교원의 상(像)과 지식인 문제 (Representation or Professors in North Korean Novels ond the Issue of Intellectuals)

초록

이 글은 북한의 소설, 주체사실주의 문학의 특징, 남한에서 진행되는 지식인 논의를 염두에 두고 북한의 소설문학에서 대학교원을 포함한 지식인이 어떻게 재현되고 있는가를 살펴보고자 하였다. 다시 말해, 북한 소설문학을 이해하기 위해 북한의 공식 문예이론인 주체사실주의를 살펴보았고, 남한 지식인 소설과 지식인 논의를 비교함으로써 북한 소설문학에 대한 이념적 이해를 문제제기하고 하였다.
주된 분석 소설작품은 강선규의(1946~)「교정의 륜리」(2000)와 『달라진 선택』(2008)으로서 두 작품은 모두 대학을 배경으로 한 체험문학이다. 이 소설들은 대조의 기법을 통해 부정 인물과 긍정인물을 통한 인간문제, 교육관, 북한 사회주의가 지향하는 바람직한 지식인과 연구의 자세를 다루고, 관료주의, 형식주의 등의 제도적인 수위에서의 대학사회의 문제점을 비판하고 있다.
그런데 남한에서의 문학 분석과 달리 북한사회의 바람직한 지식인상과 지식에 대한 원칙적 내용들은, 북한문학 분석에서 팽배한 이념적 해석 때문에 비혀실적이라거나 이상화되었다고 해석된다. 먼저 그러한 전형 인물은 자연주의에 대한 비판, 혁명적 낙관주의, 사회주의 제도에 대한 긍정을 기반으로 하는 주체문예이론의 미적 입장과 창작기법 속에서 가능하다고 보았다. 더불어 남한문학에 대한 이해 방식을 적용함으로써 이에 대한 이해를 용이하게 할 수 있다고 보았다. 남한의 지식인 소설 등을 포함한 논의도 인간문제와 제도 수준에서의 비판이 동일하게 제기되고 있다. 차이점은 자본주의와 사회주의라는 제도적 차이에서 발생하는 것인데 남한의 경우 신자유의 논리가 침투한 대학사회에 대한 비판, 북한의 경우는 관료주의와 형식주의 문제를 들고 있다. 더 나아가 바람직한 지식인상에 대한 문제는 북한은 실력과 인품을 겸비한 연구자가 강조되고, 남한은 소수의 예외를 제외하고 제도적 수준에서의 비판이 강조되는 경향이 있다.
이 글은 이러한 과정을 통해 북한 소설문학에서 이념적 해석을 경계하면서 남한문학 분석의 수위와 마찬가지로 작가의 창작적 능력과 전하는 메시지들에 대한 이해가 선행되어야 한다고 주장하였다.

영어초록

This article examines how university professors and researchers are represented in North Korean novels in terms of Juche(self-reliance) realistic literature and discourse on intellectuals in South Korea.
The main novels analyzed are Kang, Seon-gyu(1946~)’s 「Gyojeongui Yunri(The Ethics of Campus)」(2000) and 『Dalajin Seontaek(The Altered Choice)』(2008), which were based on the author’s real experiences. The novels employ comparative techniques through positive and negative characters. Through diverse plots, the novels present the perspective of university education, the ideal type of professors, the ideal attitude toward knowledge production, and the problems of formalism and bureaucracy that are faced at an institutional level in the university. An ideal professor embodies a noble personality, excellent academic ability, and contribution to a nation and to the next generation scholars which is the ultimate object of education. As for the barriers, individuals’ unprincipled behaviors like ignorance and two-faced behaviors, and bureaucracy inflicted by the nation are pinpointed.
However, the ideal professor in North Korean novels is interpreted as non-existent or romanticized for enlightenment of socialism. Such an interpretation is still common and is made due to an overwhelming political and ideological approach to North Korean literature. This article argues that the ideal type is made possible by incorporating an as cetic perspective of Juche realistic literature, such as the critique of naturalism, revolutionary optimism, and recognition of socialism. This article considers the representation of intellectuals in South Korean literature provides a better understanding for North Korean novels. It turns out that similar stories and arguments are presented in the South Korean novels, too. The differences between North and South Korean literature on professors lie in ideal type and alternatives:While in the case of North, the ideal researcher/professor is a person with superior academic ability and dignity, the critiques are mostly toward institutional level with some exceptions.
Through such process, I demonstrate that North Korean literature is to approach in terms of authors’ writing ability, his/her ideology, and messages instead of an ideological interpretation.
