의례(儀禮)에서 관상(觀像)으로: 신라 불교 부조상(浮彫像)의 양식 전환 (From Ritual to Contemplative Visualization : The Stylistic Transition of Silla Buddhist Relief Sculptures)

초록

한국 고대 불교 건축과 석조물에 조각된 부조상(浮彫像)은 공간의 맥락과 서사를 형성하는 한편, 수행자와 상호작용하는 중요한 의례적 기능을 수행하였다. 기존의 불교 부조상 연구가 주로 도상적·유형적 분류에 치중한 것과 달리, 이 글에서는 부조의 조형적 특징과 종교 의례적 역할에 주목하고자 한다.
석굴암 벽면 판석에 새겨진 부조상은 원형 주실과 방형 전실에 배치되어, 요잡(繞匝), 배례, 독경, 진언 염송 등 다양한 의례를 수행하는 목적에 부합하는 양식적 특징을 보인다. 또한 석탑·승탑·석등·불상대좌 등 여러 석조 유물에 나타난 부조상을 검토해 본 결과, 8세기와 9세기에 뚜렷한 양식적 전환이 이루어졌음이 확인된다. 요불·요탑과 같은 신체적 수행과 연계되었던 7~8세기 부조상은 입체감은 높은 고부조와 생동감 있는 표현이 중심을 이루었으나, 9세기에 이르러 화엄과 밀교의 확산으로 다라니 염송과 관상(觀像)이 중시되면서, 정면성과 상징성이 강화된 평면적·정적인 양식으로 바뀌어갔다.
이러한 양식적·도상적 변화는 신라에서 유통된 무구정경, 준제다라니경, 수구다라니경과 같은 밀교 다라니 경전도 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 이 경전들은 수행과정에서 현현하는 보살과 신중들을 자주 서술하며, 부조상의 도상 구성과 양식 형성에도 중요한 단서들을 제공하였다. 신라의 건축 벽면과 석조물 단면에 조각된 부조상은 이처럼 참배자와 신성을 연결하는 의례적 매개체로 자리 잡았다.

영어초록

Relief sculptures(浮彫像) carved on ancient Korean Buddhist architecture and stone monuments played a crucial ritual role by shaping spatial contextand narratives and facilitating interactions with practitioners. While previous studies of Buddhist relief sculptures have primarily focused on iconographic and typological classifications, this study examines the sculptural characteristics of reliefs and their religious-ritual functions.
The reliefs carved on the stone panels of Seokguram Grotto, arranged in its circular main chamber and rectangular antechamber, exhibit stylistic features aligned with circumambulation(繞匝), prostration, sutra recitation, and mantra chanting. A comparative analysis of reliefs on stone pagodas, stupas, stone lanterns, and statue pedestals reveals a distinct shift in stylistic expression between the eighth and ninth centuries. The seventh- to eighth-century reliefs, closely associated with physical practices such as circumambulating Buddhas and stupas, predominantly feature high-relief carvings with dynamic and lifelike depictions. However, as Huayan and Esoteric Buddhism became more influential in the ninth century, there was an increased emphasis on dhāraṇī chanting and contemplative visualization(觀像), leading to a transition toward frontal, symbolic, and relatively static compositions.
These stylistic and iconographic transformations were significantly influenced by Esoteric Buddhist dhāraṇī scriptures such as the Raśmivimalaviśuddhaprabhādhāraṇī(無垢淨光大陀羅尼經), the Cundīdevī-dhāraṇī(准提陀羅尼經), and the Mahāpratisarā-dhāraṇī(隨求陀羅尼經), which frequently describe the manifestation of bodhisattvas and guardian deities during ritual practices.
These textual accounts provide valuable insights into the formation and transition of relief sculpture style and iconography in Silla. Ultimately, relief sculptures carved on architectural walls and stone monument surfaces in Silla functioned as ritual mediators, connecting worshippers with the divine and reinforcing the sacred presence within the ritual landscape.
