노론 천주교인 김건순의 삶과 신앙: 심문기록 분석을 통한 순교 여부를 중심으로 (The Life and Faith of Kim Geon Soon(金建淳) as a Noron Party Catholic: Focusing on Martyrdom or not through the Analysis of his Interrogation Record)

초록

본고는 한국 천주교회 설립 초기에 지도자적 역할을 하였음에도 불구하고, 순교자와 배교자라는 양면적 평가를 받고 있는 김건순의 삶과 신앙을 고찰하기 위하여 마련되었다. 김건순은 당시 위세를 떨치던 노론 명가의 자제로 김상헌의 봉사손이자 직계 장손이었으며, 후덕한 인품을 지닌 빼어난 문장가였다. 어려서부터 한문 서학서들을 비롯한 다양한 서적들을 섭렵한 그는 주문모 신부를 만나 밤새 이야기를 나눈 끝에 천주교인이 되고자 결심하였다. 그는 곧바로 주위 사람들에게 전교하고 교리를 가르치는 한편, 집안의 반대에도 불구하고 신앙생활을 하다가 세례를 받았다. 그리고 그는 명도회장이었던 정약종과 함께 종합적이고 체계적인 교리서인 『성교전서』를 편찬하는 막중한 소임을 받았다.
김건순은 주문모 신부가 의금부에 자수하여 심문을 받는 자리에서 언급하여 체포되었다. 그는 여섯 차례에 걸쳐 심문을 받았다. 1차 추국 때에는 집안의 압력과 가문의 안전을 위하여 주문모 신부를 비롯한 천주학 관련 사실을 전면 부인하였다. 그러나 2차 추국 때부터 주문모 신부를 만난 사실과 천주학 관련 사실을 시인하였으며, 5차 추국과 6차 추국에서는 자신이 천주교인이라고 최후 자복 진술을 하였다. 이에 따라, 안동 김문의 파양 정장과 관찬 사료들에서는 공히 그를 사학죄인이라 판정하였으며, 당시 교회 사료들에서는 그를 순교자로 기록하였다. 그러나 오늘날에는 김건순이 추국 중에 세례 받은 사실을 부인하였다는 이유로 배교자로 평가하여 철저히 외면하고 있다. 이는 당대의 교회 사료들에 대한 불신에서 비롯된 것으로 교회 사료 기록자들의 엄정한 태도를 간과한 결과이다. 따라서 추국 과정에서 드러난 바와 같이, 그가 천주교인으로서 신앙을 고백하고 치명하였다는 사실을 직시하여 순교자로서의 그의 삶과 신앙을 재평가해야 한다.

영어초록

This thesis was prepared to examine the life and faith of Kim Geon Soon, He was considered as a martyr and an apostate despite playing a leadership role in the early days of the establishment of the Catholic Church in Korea. Kim Geon Soon was the son of a prominent Noron party family at that time. He was an offspring of offering ancestral rites and direct descendant of Kim Sang Heon(金尙憲). Also he was an outstanding writer and a man of virtuous character. From an early age, he had read a variety of books including Catholic books written in Chinese characters. After meeting with Father Ju Moon Mo(周文謨) and talking all night, he decided to become a Catholic. He immediately preached to the people around him and taught christian doctrine. Despite the opposition of his family, he was baptized while living a religious life. And he was given the heavy duty to write the Seonggyojeonseo(聖敎全書) which was a comprehensive and systematic catechism, together with Jeong Yak Jong(丁若鍾).
Kim Geon Soon was arrested after being mentioned by Father Ju Moon Mo who surrendered himself to the Uigeumbu(義禁府) and was interrogated. At the time of the first interrogation, he completely denied all the facts that related to Catholicism and Father Ju Moon Mo for the safety of his family. However, he admitted that he had met Father Ju Moon Mo and related to Catholicism from the second interrogation. And at the 5th and 6th interrogation, he made a final statement that he was a Catholic. Accordingly, records of the Andong Kim family and the Choseon dynasty judged him as a criminal who believed in Catholicism. The records of the Catholic church at that time recorded him as a martyr. But today, Kim Geon Soon is being considered as an apostate because he denied the fact that he was baptized. As a consequest, he is being ignored. This stems from distrust of the records of the Catholic church at that time. It is also the result of overlooking the strict attitude of the recorders of the Catholic church. Therefore, as revealed in the interrogation process, we must reevaluate his life and faith by facing the fact that he confessed his faith and died as a Catholic.
