    초록

    Jeongwha Taekju Wang was a daughter of Gangjong, a King of Goryeo, but was born out of wedlock. She was married to Choi Choong Heon, the top leader in the military regime, for political reasons. Despite of her uppermost social position, her life was difficult. This paper restores her life and Buddhist faith through fragmentary materials in Dongkukisangkukjip(東國李相國集), Goryeosa(高麗史) and some Buddhist documents.
    Jeongwha Taekju was born when Gangjong was a crown prince and she was married at the age of fifteen to Choi Choong Heon who was 48 years old and he was older than her father. Right after the marriage, her grand father, Myeongjong, was thrown out of the crown by her husband and her father was banished to Gangwha-Do. Thirteen years later, her father came back to Gaegyeong and became king in the following year. He was on the throne for two years and died of illness in 1213.
    Jeongwha Taekju was the third wife of Choi Choong Heon and his second wife was still alive. Her husband also had many concubines. He was constantly suffered from assassination attempts and she had to take care of her two sons when her husband was dead and Choi I, the son of his first wife, came to power.
    Thus she wanted to find the way to get over the life or death matters, lamenting that the power vanishes easily and this world is not easy to live. She received hwa-du(話頭) from Hyesim(慧諶) of Su Seon Sa(修禪社) and practiced meditation to be enlightened. Her practice was early among Goryeo women and differed from other women's practices hoping for happiness of their family, in that she focused on enlightening herself. In her later days, she participated in Yose(了世)'s Bag Ryun Sa(白蓮社) and made an offering to enshrine statue of Amitabha Buddha and copy Lotus Sutra(法華經) in gold. Also she is presumed to have prayed for the late parents and husband as well as her rebirth in Paradise calling out Amitabha Buddha like other women did and reading Lotus Sutra aloud.
