조선시대 북한산과 불교의 연고: 사찰과 산성 승군을 중심으로 (Relationship between Mt. Bukhan and Buddhism during the Joseon Period: Focusing on Temples and Monks’ Militia on the Mountain)

초록

한강 북쪽의 서울을 감싸고 있는 북한산은 삼국시대부터 불교와 연고를 가졌고 통일신라시대와 고려시대에는 유명 사찰이 들어서며 불교 신앙과 문화의 거점이 되었다. 이 글에서는 먼저 고대에 한강 유역의 북한산과 불교의 만남, 통일신라시대 북한산의 상황을 소개했고 고려시대 남경의 주산인 북한산의 주요 사찰과 국왕과의 관계를 간단히 정리해 보았다. 또 조선 전기에는 수륙재로 이름난 진관사(津寬寺)를 비롯해 북한산의 몇몇 사찰이 왕실불교의 요람으로 기능했음을 확인했다. 그리고 사찰과 승군을 매개로 하여 조선시대를 중심으로 한 북한산과 불교의 관계를 살펴보았다.
임진왜란 때에 충의를 앞세운 승군 활동으로 공적을 세운 불교계는 새로운 존립의 길을 모색해 나갔다. 국가에서는 승려 자격과 사찰의 존재를 인정하는 대신 승군과 승역을 국역 체계 안에서 제도적으로 활용하는 방식을 취했다. 17 세기 전반 남한산성에서 출발한 의승군 운용은 1711년 북한산성이 축성되고 승영 사찰들이 건립되면서 제도적으로 확립되었다. 이 글에서는 조선 후기 승군과 승역의 제도화 과정에서 서울을 방어하는 북한산성 승군의 운용 양상에 대해 구체적으로 살펴보고, 초대 8도 도총섭 계파 성능(桂坡聖能)의 활동과 업적을 추적해 보았다. 그리고 승군제의 변천과 북한산 불교의 변화상을 검토했다. 이처럼 사찰과 승군을 매개로 하여 조선시대 북한산과 불교의 관계를 다각도로 조명함으로써 서울의 대표적 명산에 담긴 불교 전통의 가치, 그 역사적 의미를 되새겨 보았다.

영어초록

Relationship between Mt. Bukhan and Buddhism during the Joseon Period: Focusing on Temples and Monks’ Militia on the Mountain Kim, Yongtae Mount Bukhan (北漢山) surrounds the northern part of Seoul divided by the Han River. The mountain came to be related to Buddhism from the period of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. Mt. Bukhan served as the foothold of Buddhist faith and culture in the subsequent Unified Silla and Goryeo periods as temples began to be founded there. This study examines the relationship that the major temples on Mt. Bukhan had with the king as it became one of the prominent mountains of the southern capital of Goryeo. The study also confirms that some temples on Mt.
Bukhan, including Jin’gwansa (津寬寺), well-known for suryukche (water-land ritual 水陸齋), functioned as a cradle for royal-family Buddhism during Joseon. Above all, this research examines the relationship between Mt. Bukhan and Buddhism, focusing on the major temples on the mountain.
After the militia activities during the Japanese invasions, the Buddhist community needed to find a new way of survival. The state decided to use the monks within the state system of the military and corvee (i.e., unpaid) labor duty while legally recognizing the existence of monks and temples. The military duty on the Buddhist community began for the defense of Mt. Namhan fortress in the early 17th century.
This was expanded as Mt. Bukhan fortress was constructed in 1711 and fortress temples built. Specifically, this study investigates the management and operation of the monks’ militia on Mt. Bukhan that would defend Seoul in the process of the expansion of the monk state duty, as well as the activities and achievements of Gyepa Seongneung (桂坡聖能), the first supreme militia commander of the eight provinces (paldo dochongseop). Considering the relationship of Mt. Bukhan area with Buddhism diachronically, this research reflects on the traditional Buddhist cultural value and historical meaning of Mt. Bukhan.
