포스트모더니즘과 해체주의 이후 거대담론에 대한 회의와 불신이 확산돼가면서 역사와 문학사의 학문적 가치와 유용성은 끊임없이 의혹의대상이 되었다. 그러나 이에 맞서 역사 담론의 총체적인 위기를 극복하고 역사의 새로운 방법과 지평을 모색하려는 노력도 함께 진행되었다.
포스트모던적 역사관은 무엇보다 역사의 텍스트성을 강조한다. 역사는실재가 아니라 이야기된, 즉 하나의 텍스트로 변형된 현실이라는 점에주목하기 때문이다. 그러므로 포스트모던적 역사는 실증적인 연구를근거로 방법적 합리성과 과학적 위상을 주장했던 과거의 역사와는 달리 역사적인 지식이 형성되고 전달되는 과정, 즉 역사 기술을 가능하게하는 언어적 (시학적, 수사학적) 전제들을 강조한다. 이렇게 담론화된역사는 선험적 역사인식이나 초월적 의미가 내재된 메타 담론을 부정하고 진보, 이성, 계급, 민족 등과 같이 과거와 현재의 관계를 일방적으로 규정하는 역사의 중심을 해체한다.
역사 담론의 전반적인 변화와 함께 문학사도 새로운 이론적, 방법론적 전제에서 출발하게 되었다. 새로운 문학사는 그 특징이 포스트모던적이라는 점에서 이전의 문학사와 구분된다. 문학사 기술의 새로운 패러다임은 그것이 구조주의적이건, 기호학적이건, 해석학적인이건 모두전체성과 연속성에 기초한 역사를 거부한다. 이것은 시대 중심의 문학사에서 우연 중심의 문학사로의 전환을 의미한다. 새로운 문학사는 다양성과 차이를 중시하는 포스트모더니즘의 시대의식과 가치에 맞게 완결성이나 통일성 대신 분산, 복합, 대비를 구성 원칙으로 삼는다. 그러므로 알파벳순으로 배열된 백과사전식 편제나 직선적이고 일관성 있는기술 보다는 몽타주나 단편적 형식을 선호한다. 또한 전체보다는 부분을 그리고 중심보다는 주변에 대한 의식을 강조하고 가능한 다양한 관점과 시각을 반영하기 때문에 정전작품 외에 오랫동안 소외되어 온 문학 전통이나 국면들을 대거 문학사 기술에 포함시킨다.
어떤 형태이건 포스트모던적이라고 말할 수 있는 역사는 과거와 현재의 관계를 초월적인 의미나 메타담론으로 고정시키지 않고, 다양한관점과 기준에 따라 새롭게 생성되는 의미관계들을 기술한다. 이런 점에서 포스트모더니즘의 도전은 역사의 종말이나 해체를 초래한 것이 아니라 새로운 역사이해와 무한한 역사해석의 가능성을 제시한 계기였다.

After the postmodernism and deconstruction, an academic value and usefulness of history and literary history were endlessly doubted due to the enlargement of skepticism and distrust against the meta-discourse. But the effort to overcome historical-discourse's overall crisis and find the new methods and prospection of history was also occurred. Above of all, postmodernism's concept of history emphasizes textuality of history. Because it focuses that history is not a real event but narrative event. Narrative event means transformed real event as a text. Previous history was based on positive research and insisted methodical rationality and scientific status. Differently, the postmodern history stresses the process of historical knowledge's creation and transmission, in other words it stresses linguistic (or poetic, rhetoric) premise which makes the historical description possible. And the discoursed history disassembles center of history, which lopsidedly regulates the relation between previous and current like the progress, the reason,the class and the people and denies meta-discourse, which includes transcendental cognition of history and transcendental meaning. With the total change of historical-discourse, the literary history started from new theory, methodic premise. The new literary history features postmodernism. So it can be differ from previous literary history. A new paradigm of writing literary history denies the history which based on totality and continuity. This means the transformation from literary history of epoch to literary history of contingency. The new literary history makes dispersion, complexity and contradiction as a composition rule instead of completion and unity. To assume time awareness and value of postmodernism that emphasizes diversity and difference. So the new literary history prefers montage or fragmentary form to alphabetical list like an encyclopedically structure or linear and coherent writing. And also the new literary history emphasizes part, periphery rather than whole, center and reflects the various perspectives as possible. So it includes canonized literature, literary traditions and situations into literary history writing. In any form, the postmodern history also tries to write newly-created numerous relations according to perspective and criteria, which is not fixed to transcendental meaning or meta-discourse. In this point, the challenge of postmodernism made new understanding of history and possibilities of history interpretation rather than termination or disassembles of history.
