그로테스크와 엽기의 주제사(主題史) (Thematics of Grotesque and Bizarreness)

초록

The word ‘Grotesque’ is originally begun from the expression for the
unique pattern of roman architecture. This word means basically ‘strange or
extraordinary thing’. In this point, this concept is similar to the essential
concept of ‘Literature’. ‘Grotesque’ came to have wider range of meaning
after Wolfgang Kayser and Mikhail Bakhtin. Kayser considered conceptual
category of Grotesque as mixture of something strange, horrible, diabolic
and comic. Bakhtin noticed property of Grotesque as a way to expose
political awareness with revealing and mocking body.
Complicated meaning of this concept should be carefully considered when
we examine history of Korean literature with the theme ‘Grotesque’.
Moreover we should consider Korean history enough: long and ruthless
historical experience. In the west, Grotesque occurred as a resistance against
rational modern society. In the other hand, Grotesque had larger and more
important function to reveal violence and oppression.
Grotesque literature was debunking of ruthless reality during the period
of Japanese occupancy and Korean War. The period of military dictatorship
made Grotesque literature expose or symbolize Body as means of resistance.
Grotesque literature of these days debunks dark side of industrial society
that is made up with rationality and civilization.
Grotesque literature is significant, for it is a result of dispassionate
observation and bold language expression throughout ages.
