일본 수자공양의 한국사회 정착과 그 의미 (A Study on Settlement of Japanese Mizuko-Kuyo in Korean Society and its Significance)

초록

本研究は、仏教系寺院で行われている死者儀礼である'堕胎児薦度齋'が、韓国社会でどう定着していき、その意味は何であろうかを考察している。それは堕胎児薦度齋が行われている韓国の仏教寺院とその依頼者の事例を通じて行った。堕胎児薦度齋は、日本の水子供養を導入し韓国の仏教系が新たな死者儀礼として誕生させたものである。子供が祭られたことのない韓国の伝統社会では、このような儀礼はここ30年ほど前までは見られなかった。今現在は宗派を問わず韓国の仏教系の寺院では頻繁に行われている。日本から導入されたといい、その形式や方法からは日本の痕跡は見当たらない。韓国で行い始めた1985年以後から仏教系は、経典をもって堕胎女性たちに、堕胎は罪であり殺人であると警覺心を呼び起こしている。また堕胎児は祟りを起こす冤魂であることから鎭魂に対象であると説明している。堕胎女性はこういった仏教の立場をそのまま受け入れ、自分の見回りの問題の解決やその予防或は罪意識から解放される手段として活用している。堕胎児薦度齋は、産兒制限や男兒選好思想等で、胎兒に対する生命観が稀薄していた韓国社会と堕胎女性たちに、胎児の生命の尊嚴と倫理に対する意識の変化を齎した。堕胎児薦度齋の依賴者は、仏教系信者に限らず非仏教系の依賴者にまで拡大·展開しつつある。また、寺院側からネットでのホームページ等を運営し、依頼の手続きや接近性の容易と秘密保障を図っている。ネットでの申し込みとなると非仏教系の依頼者はいっそう増える。これは儀礼の商業化と繋がることになる可能性が高い。日本の水子供養が'堕胎児薦度齋'として変容されて韓国社会に受け入れられるようになったのは、韓国の伝統文化の基底に存在してる憑靈信仰と仏教系の死者儀礼である靈駕薦度という存在があったからこそ出来たことである。韓国式水子供養である'堕胎児薦度齋'は仏教系の死者儀礼として韓国社会に定着しつつ、仏教性の民間信仰として韓国の新たな伝統文化になりつつある。

영어초록

In this study, 'the ritual for the unborn dead', Korean Buddhist memorial servicefor the unborn dead was examined to understand its settlement in Korean societyand the significance. This study was conducted in Korean Buddhist temples thatactually practice the ritual for the unborn dead with cases of clients.
The ritual for the unborn dead is the newly born memorial service in KoreanBuddhist society after introducing Mizuko-Kuyo from Japan. Before the ritual forthe unborn dead, such rite could not be found in a traditional Korean society wherea child could not be the subject of memorial service. Today, however, this ritualis frequently practiced in Korean Buddhist society regardless of its religiousdenomination. Although the ritual for the unborn dead was introduced from Japan,vestiges of Japan are not found in formality and methods of the ritual. Since thefirst practice of the ritual in 1985, Korean Buddhist society has aroused attentionfrom women who had an abortion, emphasizing that an abortion is murder and asin according to Buddhist scriptures. In addition, they explain that the unborn deadare the subjects of a repose of souls since they are sorrowful spirits that causetroubles. Women who had an abortion accept this Buddhist perspective and use itas a solution or prevention from their problems and as a means of emancipationfrom their sense of guilty. The ritual for the unborn dead has changed dignity ofhuman embryos and ethics in women who had an abortion and Korean society wherethere was not much of respect for the life of human embryos due to birth controlpolicies and a notion of preferring a son to a daughter. Clients for the ritual of theunborn dead have became various including Buddhists and non-Buddhists. TheBuddhist society has promoted an easy access to a request for the ritual by havingonline website. Due to this, there is an increasing number of non-Buddhist clientsonline compared to offline clients, which could make the ritual become commercial.
The transformation of Japanese Mizuko-Kuyo into 'the ritual for the unborn dead'and its acceptance in Korean society were possible because of possession belief atthe bottom of traditional Korean society and Buddhist memorial service calledYounggacheondo. 'The ritual for the unborn dead' of Korean Mizuko-Kuyo hassettled in Korean society as a Buddhist memorial service and taken its root in newtraditional Korean culture as a Buddhist folk belief.
