초록

1932년, 제국 일본의 ‘국어’로 식민지 조선의 현실을 재현한 조선인 작가가 제국 문단의 조명을 받으며 등장한다. 그리고 그로부터 7년 후인 1939년에 다시 한 번 식민지 조선의 작가가 제국 일본의 ‘국어’로 작품을 쓰고 제국으로부터 호평을 받으며 주목받는다. 시기의 차이는 있지만, 제국 일본 문단으로부터의 호명이라는 영광과 소위 ‘조선적인 것’으로서의 ‘작가적 소비’를 누린 작가가 장혁주와 김사량이다. 그런데 이 두 작가는 닮은 점이 많은 작가이기도 하다. 앞서 이야기한 것처럼 일본 문단에서 주는 문학상을 탄 거의 유일무이한 식민지 작가들이고, 둘 다 일본어로 작품을 쓰고 일본 문단과 조선 문단에서 활동했을 뿐만 아니라 일본어 작품들 중에는 일본에 살고 있는 조선인들의 현실을 소재로 다룬 작품들을 남기기도 했다. 두 작가는 식민자와 식민지 본국 속에서 생활하는 “벌레와 이슬람교도들”로 표상되는 피식민자들, 그 사이의 양가적 입장에서 통역을 수행했던 셈이었다.
그러나 ‘제국이 식민지를 소비하는 방식’과 ‘식민지가 소비되는 방식’ 사이에는 균열이 존재했다. 제국은 식민지와 제국을 연결시키기 위한 ‘소비적 고리’로서 식민지 지식인 통역자가 필요했지만, 식민지 지식인은 식민지가 유행처럼 소비되는 그 시기적인 틈을 비집고 들어가서 ‘제국의 언어’로 ‘식민지의 특수성’을 통역하면서 그 사이의 균열을 증명한다. 두 작가는 한동안 일본에 머물면서 소외당하고 있는 재일조선인의 문제를 소재로 일본어로 작품을 쓰고 발표한다. 장혁주와 김사량이 제국 안에서 포착한 재일조선인의 모습과 혼혈의 문제는 제국과 식민지의 관계, 더 나아가 식민지 지식인의 정체성을 의심하게 만드는 계기가 되었다. 오로지 식민지의 관점에서 보았던 제국의 ‘이미지’가 ‘생활’과 ‘일상’의 영역으로 편입되는 순간, 피식민자로서의 정체성뿐만 아니라 식민지 지식인으로서의 정체성과 갈등은 더욱 더 심화된다. 그 혼란과 갈등이 담겨 있는 작품들이 장혁주의 「우수인생」과 김사량의 「빛 속으로」이다. 그래서 본고에서는 장혁주의 「우수인생」과 김사량의 「빛 속으로」를 면밀하게 비교분석하면서 두 작가가 보여주고자 했던 ‘제국 일본의 두 얼굴’과 식민지 지식인으로서의 정체성에 대한 고민의 흔적 그리고 차이점을 확인해본 것이다.

영어초록

In 1932, a writer of Joseon who reproduced the reality of colonized Joseon in the ‘national language’ of empire Japan emerged with the spotlight of the empire literary circles. And after 7 years from it, in 1939, a writer of colonized Joseon once again wrote a work in ‘national language’ of empire Japan to gain the spotlight with the great critiques from the empire. There was a time difference, but those writers who had the ‘writer’s consumption’ with the so-called ‘Joseon-like” work with the glory from the empire Japan’s literary circles and they were Jang Hyuk-joo and Kim Sa-ryang. And these two writers have many similarities. As mentioned earlier, they were the only colonial writers who won the literature awards given by the Japanese literary world, wrote the works in Japanese languages, acted in the literary worlds of Japan and Joseon as well as left works with the theme in reality of Joseon people living in Japan with his works written in the Japanese language. These two writers carried out the “interpretation for both parties” between the colony people and colonized people expressed as the “insect and Islam followers” lived within the colonized country.
However, there existed the crack between the ‘method that the empire consumes the colony’ and ‘method for the colony to be consumed’. The empire needed the interpreter, or the intellectual of the colony as the ‘consumption ring’ to link the colony and the empire, but the intellectuals of the colony smeared into the time gap to consume the colony like the fever and prove the cracks between them as interpreting the ‘particularity of the colony’ with the ‘language of the empire’. These two writers stayed in Japan for a while to write the works in Japanese language with the theme of those Joseon people in Japan who were neglected from them. As time passed, these two writers chose and marched different path in “Joseon language as a regional language” and “Joseon language as the surrounding language”. The issues on appearance of Joseon people in Japan and the half-breeds captured in the empire by Jang Hyuk-joo and Kim Sa-ryang were the turning point to question the identity of intellectuals in the colony with the relationship of the empire and the colony. The image of the empire that was seen only on the point of view as a colony that was transferred into the area of ‘lives’ and ‘ordinary affairs’ and it deepened the conflict with the identity as the colonized people as well as the intellectual in colony. Works that containing the confusion and conflict were 「Sad Life」 of Jang Hyuk-joo and 「Into the Light」 of Kim Sa-ryang. Therefore, under this writing, those 「Sad Life」 of Jang Hyuk-joo and 「Into the Light」 of Kim Sa-ryang are closely compared and analyzed to confirm the trace of such contemplation on the identity of the ‘two faces of empire Japan’ and intellectuals of colony as well as the difference that those two writers attempted to demonstrate.
